I have no clue how not one but two adults from England could not know where Dublin is. I'm not offended, just genuinely astonished.

Guys Glenn Hansard is playing the part of the guitarist in this movie, he's the lead singer of The Frames and won an Oscar for Once. I'm amazed you guys didn't realise that he's the most successful person who came from this film. Also Dublin is the Capital of The Republic of Ireland it's not part of Northern Ireland.

Yes it is quite annoying to hear the most ignorant remarks coming, I have to say, from British people regarding Ireland. Nobody else in Europe ever speaks about Ireland with such absolute ignorance. It's staggering for Irish people to hear such things, and then when they correct those responsible they are usually met with more of the same, suggesting Irish people are too sensitive and a bit silly for simply stating their identity. I can only conclude, it must be compulsory in British schools to know almost nothing about the country next to them, and to just assume it's of no importance and speak of it as if is some kind of backyard that might belong to Britain. If was to speak about London or Birmingham in the context of a film saying they were cities in France, Holland or even Scotland, would I be taken seriously?
@sarahharris2729

@mikki3562 I'm Irish and worked in an English school. They completely ignore Irelands existence in the curriculum. In English, geography and history class. A level History which is an elective does a module on N.I. but not many students choose this.

Been mentioned before - I love you guys but it’s important whether Dublin is in Northern Ireland or not... it’s not. My Northern Irish wife has drilled that in to me ;p Might be worth a notation if not a re-upload? Great review though, love the film too!

He doesn't say "yes, but I am" to Natalie's question, just says "but I am the manager". There's a big difference, because in the second answer he he gives her nowhere to with that.

I was in Haight-Ashbury during the Summer of '67' and watched local bands become famous soon after. One of my cousins was married to a performer whose band never made it after 10 years, and another cousin who was a roadie who traveled with Carlos Santana. In Yuma, Az. I met Chrystal Gayle and our conversation was about bands playing the Southern Calif. Circuit, start to evolve, then to break up before they 'made it'. Sometimes, it was because the bands had personal relationship problems but most often other bands would lure one of the musicians away with promises of a better deal. Many would be musicians have inflated egos. The 'Commitments' is realistic. Sex, drugs and alcohol abuse are other temptations, which will destroy them. I never noticed they said 'Fuck' 169 times! My older sister who was a Sunday school teacher taught me only stupid people used foul language. However, when I joined the U.S. Marines, I had to swear especially when I gained rank because if I didn't, my subordinantes wouldn't believe I was serious.,

Maria Doyle Kennedy who played Natalie and who is a professional musician, was in Orphan Black and we get a throwback to her Commitments past with a great blues number in a seedy Irish bar.

I have been thinking of all the reasons why I love this movie so much. In a prior comment it is because I have been loosely associated with various bands, some famous, some not. It is because I love almost all types of music, but this isn't it either. It is because of how fickle life can be. I've never been rich or famous or have associated much with them. In a way, I wouldn't want to if I had to play their silly games. A couple of times, I've been homeless, never more than three months and met people who had been rich but lost it for various reasons. I've known people who should have been well off for the rest of their lives but things happened beyond their control and are depending on Social Security. They weren't lying about their former lives. They had no great weaknesses either, not more than the rest of us. In the end, though is how you handle success or failure, did it change your heart, darken your soul? That is the poetry the author talked about.

This film is the best! My ex had the Barrytown books and then he lent them to me. The Snapper is awesome! The lady who played the Bernie character was in one of the star wars films and one other one I saw as well as Pulp Fiction. Her face is very distinctive. I read a few posts here saying some of these actors did other things so I won't repeat but great review :)

I grew up watching this film on tv time and time again with my family, having not seen it for nearly twenty years I bought the bluray and watched it a couple of weeks ago and it brought back a lot of memories but I sold it on eBay because it just felt dated and I don’t need to hear them songs anymore. I enjoyed watching the new special features though and seeing what happened to all the actors.

Fantastic film. Very good review. I think I've watched this about once a year since it came out. I've had a few of the tracks on my IPod forever. I've been to Dublin, and it is not the place from the film, but I went 20 years late. What does that mean? Fucked if I know, Terry

Lads you need to work on your geography. The film is set in Dublin, but Dublin is not in northern Ireland. It's kinda like saying the film is set in Scotland in the city of Liverpool lol Glad you liked the movie. You should check out The Snapper, another great Irish film set around the same time and place.
