So it has been just over a full year since I happened upon your anemone video, the blue one, and I saw that pigment flowing and blending so beautifully and I decided to try watercolor. I started with very cheap (maybe $25 total for paint, brushes, and paper) and about a week after I watched your videos about the importance of quality supplies. So over about a month I invested in the same 3 brushes you use, heritage 4050, quite a few of the same pigments you recommend, and 100% cotton cp paper. I immediately saw a huge difference, the very first time I painted. Since then i have painted almost every single day because, with the help of your RU-vid channel, I kind of naturally caught on and have surprised myself with my natural ability because I have never had any other kind of artistic skills. Like at all. So I want to say thank you because you introduced me to Watercolor and you’ve helped me learn as well, and I love to paint. I literally don’t even care if my ends up being what I set out to paint or whether it’s “good”. However, when it is good, and when it is on par with the vision I started with, I feel such a sense of pride. Many of my close friends and family have my artwork in frames hanging in their homes and businesses now, and not just to appease me, because they actually like what I’ve created and that is a feeling I’ve never felt and can’t quite describe, but it’s incredible and full filling and I owe it entirely to you. So thank you Jenna! I can’t wait to see what you’ll bring to RU-vid in 2022. I have really enjoyed seeing your own progression as a painter and especially as a teacher. You are an incredible instructor because you’re so down to earth and silly and not afraid to just be yourself and that really shines through in your tutorials. Thank you so much. I literally love you guys!!!

Jenna, your depth of knowledge into color theory is amazing. I love your ability to verbally explain and show us exactly how important it is to know color, and how to come to a complete visual conclusion, a perfect painting. You show how to get the idea out of our heads. It’s not always possible to pick up a brush and get what you want or get what you see onto the paper. Some people can do it, but not all of us have that innate knowing. Again, you completely demonstrate how to do it. Thank you, for making it fun. PAM

So much to learn for this newbie! First, I thoroughly enjoyed creating color charts - the ooh, ahh moments...Then, when I would practice leaves and flowers, I'd use only the paints in the palette with very little mixing. So interesting to see the progression of the learning process and I do see a future of blending the brush techniques with the color mixing with the paint consistencies! PHEW! It will be so fun to see this develop over time - I give it ten years! 😂

Thank you so much for this wonderful “nuts and bolts” tutorial. Just what I needed! In this tutorial, you touch upon observing your subject to determine the light source, hues, colors, values, etc. Have you previously done, or plan to in the future, a tutorial demonstrating how to do just that - break down the subject to make these determinations, including the process you use in the selection of method, coolers, etc. Thank you for sharing all of this!

This was so helpful and informative. There are so many nuggets of info and tips - I think I will need to save this and come back a couple more times. I was recently mixing two colors and noticed that they kept separating if the puddle sat too long. And even when I remixed them and put them down on paper, the end result was splotchy colors - in this case, it looked pretty, but it was not my intention. I really need to make a mixing chart to see what blends nicely. Thank you Jenna!

Because watercolours use transparency to achieve tints and lighter tones, it is a general rule of watercolour painting to work from light to dark. This means diluted less intense washes precede concentrated darker or more intense colours. To prevent uncontrolled flares caused by applying a brush overloaded with paint or water into a wet area of the painting, we must use a drier brush into a wetter area. the paint reservoir of the brush is in the body or belly of the hair. To paint long thin lines, pin striping brushes and rigger brushes have very long hairs to increase the volume of paint. Mop brushes rely more on the fat diameter of the belly of the brush. To ensure that paint flows the hair should be wet. For fine details excess water must be squeezed out of the brush. For safety to avoid ingesting paint through the skin we commonly use tissues or paper towelling. Some artists hang an old cotton hand towel on their arm for this purpose. The tip of the brush is then dipped into the paint and excess wiped back onto the edge of the palette well. The same method is used to create a drier brush to paint soft merging colours using the wet technique. A mop brush, flat brush or larger sable brush is used in place of a rigger brush. Asians make brushes from different hairs for different rates of flow. In the west synthetic brushed have a slower rate of flow. Because we work from light to dark, a greater concentration of paint making a thicker paint also slows the flow. Mixing the colour and directly applying paint with an overloaded brush is very likely to cause unsightly flares and paint runs. Rules are made to be broken. when watercolour paint is completely, 100% dry, diluted washes can be applied over intense underpainting. It is wise not to over work the area as there is a danger of remixing the underlying colour. Simple normal method: Mix your colour, squeeze out the paint from the body of the brush back into the palette well, reload the right amount of paint on the tip and head of the brush, wipe off any excess then proceed to apply the colour. The greater the pressure on the brush the more paint and water will be released from the brush. The faster the brush travels the less paint can flow from the brush. Heavy handed and slow creates more flow. Light pressure and fast is a drier brush stoke.

very interesting content! Thank you for your tips and tricks.. the main eye opening one was the consistency... I never plaid with it exactly knowing what I do. Love tea to butter! 🥰 The second part was pritty intuitive for me, but I guess its not for everyone so thank you 🙏🤗 One further question is if you, at s further stage, consider also the pigments of your colors? So do you choose one green over an other in a mix knowing the properties of the pigments? Could the hue be second to properties? Lots of love from Switzerland Alexandra

These are great! (as usual) However, I have a follow up question! When I'm mixing colors, I feel like my brush soaks up so much pigment and water that I can't get it down on the palette and even as I'm spreading it out sometimes, I feel like my brush soaks up even more. Then when I want to move on to my second color to add, I feel like I'm wasting so much pigment because I rinse it off and then I loose all the pigment my brush has soaked up into my water cup. I use the same brushes you recommend (the Princeton synthetics). I'm really struggling if I want to make *a lot* of the same color from a mixture. I can only seem to make a little bit at a time from what stays on the palette and then when I go to mix it again, I never get it exactly the same. Am I just being too stingy with it to begin with? Is there a problem with my palette? Am I even making sense? How much wood would a wood chuck.... oh, you get the idea...

@@JennaRaineyChannel thank you for the happy emojis. I've watched all your videos and have in my reference book the practices. But thank you for the refresher, because I do forget at times these helpful lessons. My practice work looks much better than my first one. We all can improve, and I like how much my art has improved from your tutorials and your book. Looking forward to the new book in 2023, from the sketches you showed, it will certainly be a beautiful book.💕💕

Do you use water colour pans or tubes? the one challenge I see with pans is that how much/how many times one has to get the colour on the brush :-)

I know this was a long time ago, but what 12 colors do you have in your palette?

I have done a couple palm trees! Check my channel homepage and look for the playlist that includes trees and plants. I’ve done a couple palm trees throughout those videos… oh! And I’ve done a landscape tutorial of a loose-style beach and there are very simple palm trees in that one

I've been watching your videos all day and your nails have been short and bare. Now all I can focus on are your fancy nails bopping and weaving all over the screen lol! (pretty btw! : ) )
