@@OpinionatedChicken59 There are some repetitive moments but there’s a lot more to the story than you think. If you haven’t I recommend watching Jordan’s videos from part 1. He really gets into detail about the story and what’s going on.
I mean to be fair that is the whole pitch of the show. To become a Pokémon master, explore new regions, and discover new Pokémon. The parts that make the show so good is that it actually shows failure and defeat besides the good guy winning all the time. You get to meet all kinds of new characters and see a ton of character development. I understand how team rocket can get kinda annoying sometimes but that’s 90s cartoons for ya. gotta have some type of villain that always gets there asses kicked lol. I do gotta admit I feel like nostalgia is what keeps a lot of people attached to the show and games.
@@televisionmaster1690 the comment I made above is about Jordan’s series reviewing ash’s journey. THAT is a masterpiece. For the show itself, of course it has its flaws and repetitiveness but it still overall great. I do agree that the show should have went a different direction years ago but they made it work apparently . 26 years later and people are still hooked on it. Who knows maybe introducing a new protagonist will give the show the fresh start it needs.
@@KalebMoto Works as a western kids cartoon esque but for what it really is which is a story to follow, it falls flat in a lot more ways than you think. The repetitiveness isn't there as a lesson or for a greater meaning but just there for tedium and to pad out the pacing of a story that shouldn't even be that long in the first place. Saying that it's still a "great" show is speaking of it way too highly tbh. Nostalgia is honestly what carried the show and kept it from being universally loathed. It's not offensive like say Velma. It's just bland, tedious and too generic at least in my opinion.
This is where ash's journey started to pick up for me. I've got the most nostalgia for this series and sinnoh. Adding contest battles made it so entertaining and different from the original series
@@Aaron__Parker When Scarlet/Violet was announced to have multiple stories, I had really been hoping that contests would have been one of them (but in a heavily overhauled state so they'd be more fun to play than the minigame contests we got in previous games). There's always next gen for them to do it with multiple story paths again though.
The journey series changing how Pokémon contest was done became the final straw for me (which made me hate the journey series and just think that ash is finally being retired)
Lucario and the Mystery of Mew really is one of the standout Pokemon movies. I like how involved Lucario is as a character and his connection with Ash, as well as just seeing a playful Mew interacting with Pikachu and Meowth
Lucario became my favorite pokemon as a kid after seeing that film. Still is mostly to this day, If I had to choose a companion in the Pokemon world it would be Lucario
I always loved how Winona had the shiny Swellow. Taillow was my first ever shiny all the way back in Sapphire, which had evolved into Swellow. Not even a month later, her Gym battle episode aired with *her* shiny Swellow.
As a "Gen 1er" I appreciate these videos ! Work keeps me too busy to watch the all the animes that came out but these are good to smoke a bowl & relax to, while also catching up on a journey that began when I was a small child & ended as I was a 36 yr old
This is the series where Pokémon found it’s pacing. Gen 3 was a great time for the franchise. I believe the Diamond and Pearl series perfected the pacing presented here, but we gotta give it to Advanced for paving the way for future series like DP, XY and SM. It’s often overlooked how important this series is and was for the franchise
I feel it’s thanks to the contests and the region villain teams that it didn’t feel like you would go dozens of episodes without anything really happening
@@BlueBlazeKing absolutely. It feels that we always had something going on. Gym battles, contests, capture or evolution episodes, TA or TM episodes, battle frontier, reunion with old Pokémon or companions. A lot happening so there’s not a lot of filler compared to Johto
@@lynxerax7011 I love the gen 5 games. BW2 is the best in my opinion. But the BW anime unfortunately wasn’t everything that it could have been. Although, I’ll admit that it had a fantastic pacing up until the final season. That doesn’t mean great story though, but it did have few filler in its first 100 episodes, surprisingly.
advanced battle and battle frontier are incredibly nostalgic for me. i remember coming home from school and watching it with my older brother after xiaolin showdown on cartoon network. it was before i could form really consistent clear memories with media so i didn't remember much of it before watching this video, but still. most people grew to love grovyle from mystery dungeon. i grew to love grovyle from advanced battle also jirachi wish maker is the best Gen 3 movie and is one of my favorite pokemon movies period
Both Lucario and the Mystery of Mew & Pokemon Ranger and the Temple of the Sea are some of my all time favorite Pokémon movies. I watched them a ton as a kid.
The whole idea of the People of the Water is a really interesting one that felt like it needed more than being a background element of one movie. Having crystals being tied into the lore is a classic fantasy move, a very Final Fantasy move (l’cie what I did there?), and how an ancient culture survives through the ages into the present is something that makes for great material.
Lucario and the mystery of mew was one of 2 pokemon movies I had on disc as a kid, so it holds a special place in my heart. Lucario is still one of my all time favourites
just so you know, youtube takes 50% of all donations like this. if you want a creator to get the most money you can, you should give through a different medium
The series also showcases Wurmple’s branched evolution by having May’s Wurple evolve into a Silcoon, then Beautifly why Jessie ends up with a Cascoon, which evolves into Dustox and has an episode where their Wurple evolve simultaneously and the two fight over the Silcoon.
Gen 3 was where I started watching since my parents forbade me from anything Pokémon related early on in my life. It inspired me to play Ruby, which started me on my own journey of enjoying both the games and the show. I'm really looking forward to part 4, since Platinum is one of my favorite Pokémon games.
I was very eager to hear you talk about Lucario. It's a movie I never got to watch until later in life and I was not disappointed. The ending hits so hard and the cherry-nail on the coffin-top is that it was the last time we got to hear Veronica Taylor as Ash...
My new favorite playlist to fall asleep to. It's so fun waking up periodically either by my cat, or to get some water and thinking "oh, he's there now" with evolved Pokemon and new badges etc.
I can't thank you enough for this series. I really doubt I would have ever gone back to watch (especially the early seasons of) Pokemon, but it's great to have a condensed version of most of the important events and how they play a role in the story! Much appreciated 🙏
Waiting for these parts to be uploaded as they come out is like when a new gen of Pokémon anime came out, just always exciting and awesome! I love them all!
Hey! Can I just say how much I love these videos of the complete journey of Ash Ketchum. As a fan from the 90’s like you it’s so nice to be able to look back on his adventure and just how much a beloved character like him has progressed over the decades. I cannot even imagine how much work has to go into creating a video this long let alone 8 of them to cover his whole journey! So just wanted to say thank you and keep up the incredible work!
As a kid, Destiny Deoxys was my favorite Pokémon movie...until the Giratina movie released... It also sparked my love for Zombie movies, of all things, due to the movie's aspect of a small group of people surviving in an overrun city.
You put so much work into your content. Especially, this series. Feels like there’s a lot of passion behind it. Thank you, for that. I get to relive my early 90’s kid nostalgia through this. There are a lot of other videos, giving the history on the series, but yours is the only one that has kept my attention. Thank you.
I have never realized that the characters had development. I remember Pokémon as a bunch of stand alone episodes that sometimes had plot development. And sometimes suddenly different Pokémon were on the team. And suddenly we had Misty and May. My main complaint about Pokémon was always that Ash said 'We will see each other again!' to everyone he met and in my experience that never happend. How wrong I was. So many returning characters all the time 😂
For some reason, as a kid, I loved the episode where Max befriends a Shuppet. That episode stuck with me so much that I always wanted a Shuppet in every game. It’s become my favorite Pokémon for this reason. Loved this era. Onto the next! Love your videos!!!
This is where I began my journey with the anime, I remember really liking the new companions and the movies were great (particularly Lucario and the Mystery of Mew; love that movie). Excited to see this retrospective!
I hadn't played or watched pokemon in 20 years, I somehow stumbled across your channel, and these have become my new favorite videos I've seen in many years. Thank you so much for making these. You clearly put so much effort and care into them and it really shows, along with your hey Arnold! Retrospective you have joined the ranks of legendary content creators in many people's eyes. Something quite wonderful
I think that what makes different/stands out about Ash in gen 3 compared to the previous two is that in the first one he was a complete rookie and sometimes trainer that needed to learn how to treat his pokemon, in the second one he's still a rookie but one that at least knows the basics of being a pokemon trainer and in gen 3 he kinda has as role as a mentor to May. A trainer that, like Ash in the previous seasons, starts her journey knowing pretty much nothing about pokemon and that ends up having a rivalry with someone that seems to be more competent than her but that ends up respecting her. In a way, May´s journey parallels Ash's original journey and althought sometimes can end up unnoticed, Ash is the one giving her advice about how to be a trainer (while still having moments where he needs to grow as a trainer). This was a pretty cool video. Really looking forward to watch part 4.
being born in 2000 this was definitely my favorite gen to watch every morning before school so i was waiting on this episode specifically. clutch timing as always jordan🤝
This is where I fell of with the series, thank you so much for your thorough walk down nostalgia lane. Looking forward to going through the future generations. Thank you for all of your hard work!!!
Gen 3 was when I fully got into Pokemon. I used to play Sapphire a lot and even played it on the way to school somedays. It was a lot of fun and soon hopefully I'm going to go back and relive Sapphire again. The anime was also something I watched a lot, but it was around the time the first season of Diamond and Pearl already started. The Advance Battle theme was an absolute BANGER Also, Lucario and the Mystery of Mew was a fantastic! One of my favorite movies when I was little.
Before i get into this video! i just wanna thank you for making these pokemon videos. they really get me through the workday. you're an awesome youtuber~
3rd Gen Pokemon was always my favorite. It was just where I was at the perfect age to really appreciate it. The anime, the games, and especially the movies from this era are all really special to me.
I loved May and the introduction of contests! Max was also funny, the way he bickered with his sister was realistic to me and I enjoyed watching them (even if some fans find him annoying). May and Drew's rivalry in the Contest circuit was a great thorough-line while Ash was getting his gym badges. And Harley is iconic as a rival too, he's so petty towards a literal ten year old when he really doesn't need to be... Overall I really like this series for the new things it was doing, giving the female companion more of a story arc and journey alongside Ash.
I've been waiting for this! I love your video series recapping the anime and generations. Hoenn is where I began to 'grow-out' of Pokemon as a kid becoming a teenager in the mid-2000's. So I'll be super interested to see how the anime continues Ash's journey after Gen 3. Thanks for all your hard work making these videos! It's a wealth of knowledge!
Gen 3 was a big jumping off point for a lot of people. Everything was in decline in sales and popularity around that time. I came in during gen 4 and thats when a good chunk of people around my age came in too.
So a funny thing about the Lucario movie. I had dropped Pokemon the series around gen 2 but would watch the movies with no context of why Ash's friends were different people. After Jirachi I was kind of done all together with pokemon aside from the games. Then the Lucario movie came out, which I only got to see because my sister... stole it. I to this day don't know how she walked out of the store with it but she did and we watched the movie. I loved Lucario so much that it became my username for many years to follow and being called Luca for short ended up becoming my actual name upon transition.
The Advanced series of Pokemon was actually a series I missed out on due to my "pokemon eeww" phase I went through due to bullying. It took me a while to get back to it, and while I might not have enjoyed it as much as the next series, I'm still glad I watched it. Destiny Deoxys and Jirachi Wishmaker are very memorable to me. I was also a really big fan of the whole thing going on between May and Drew. Love it. Anyway, thanks again for the video, and I am very much looking forward to the next part. It had one of my favorite rivalry arcs.
Since the Deoxys movie was my first Pokémon movie I was really surprised when in the seventh generation of the anime we had a character similar to Tory. If I had a nickel for every time a kid in the anipoké was traumatized by an alien pokémon when younger and since then was afraid to touch pokémon I'd have two nickels, which isn't much but it's weird that it happened twice.
I remember coming home from school every day back in the mid 2000’s and watching Static Shock, Pokemon, YuGiOH, and Jackie Chan. Watching this series has filled me with so much nostalgia and emotion that I haven’t felt in a long time. I’ve looked through your many videos and holy shit dude my brain came flooding back with memories! I loved Pokémon. I still do. My brother and I got Blue/Red, Gold/Silver, and Sapphire/Ruby. We watched the anime up until the end of this season. We didn’t get the new console as preteens and fell off during gen 4 and 5, but when we got jobs we bought gen 6 and 7. I’m glad you have this series going because it’s literally an hour and a half full of dopamine and you explain everything so clearly in all the categories you have. Im looking forward to what happened after I stopped watching the show. Thank you ❤
This was so stunning! One of the most intense and incredible eras of the Pokemon anime! The movies, of which two are not available digital and the special the same, those are my favorite parts. Along with the Kyogre and Groudon episodes. Favorite Pokemon though has to be Absol of this generation!
Gen 3 will always be the most nostalgic for me. Leaf Green was the first Pokemon game I bought, and Ruby was the first that i completed. Lucario and the Mystery of Mew to this date is one of my favorite Pokemon movies too. Not to mention, the Advance Battle theme is an absolute bop.
I honestly can't wait for the Diamond and Pearl video. The labor day marathon early in that era is when I started watching weekly as a kid, and that era in general with everything happening on the DS is when I got to actually get into the series instead of watching from afar as a kid, with things like the aforementioned anime, the first two mystery dungeons, the second ranger game, and of course Platinum.
Jordan this series is insane! You’re pumping out these 1.5 hour videos like it’s NOTHING!! And I love every minute. Excited to keep watching each generation as we get into the anime that I really haven’t seen!
Gen 3 is the best to be honest in just nostalgia bringing in so many new people to the franchise. Word of mouth was king and ruby and sapphire was lit as heck!
Thanks a lot for doing this series. I like how you split between recap and analysis. It helps jog my memories for the bits of Pokemon I did watch, but it also helps contextualize it as a long-form series. I grew up *with* the series, which means I saw the episodes over months and years, not all at once and definitely missed some episodes and movies along the way, so I didn't notice that Pokemon even had an overarching plot or growth for each of the seasons. It also got more difficult to watch Pokemon as I grew older for a variety of life reasons, so I'm really looking forward to the latter half of Diamond/Pearl to gen 5 and beyond.
I still remember how haunting the episode with kyogre and groudon was. It kinda reminds me of the beach episode of the first season where tentacruel took over meowth.
I love this video series, never could get into the entire show cause it was a bit to much for my liking, but this is great. Like your other videos too. You're doing great
Poor students watching Roxxane get her Ground type knocked out by an Electric attack... Learning the wrong lessons that wont work for them cause they don't have plot armor
Part 1 was my first video from you Jordan, and now I've gone back to rewatch some of your older videos. They're all so carefully thought out and constructed. I listen to these videos as a podcast whenever I'm working.
This era was a great new refresh and provided such wonderful movies too, also could not get enough of Lucario and Mystery of Mew. Fave Pokemon for sure was Milotic ❤
Been planning an entire Pokemon anime rewatch sometime soon. I look forward to these videos constantly as gens 1-4 are particularly nostalgic anime series for me. This is just fun. You don’t really see many Pokemon anime retrospectives
So this is the season where I dropped out of the series as a Kid. My favorite character was Misty, and since I wasn't able to watch every single episode since i came onto the series a little late and had to rely on inconsistent re-runs the only real plot thread I was able to follow and care about was the relationship of Ash and Misty. I saw the first episode and was able to see how it started, and I watched the second Movie and was able to see allot of the ship, so I just kinda assumed the two would get together and I really enjoyed finding hints of that in the series while watching whatever random thing Ash was doing at the time. Sometimes he had 6 or 7 badges, sometimes he was getting his 3rd, sometimes badges weren't even mentioned but he has a new pokemon I've never seen before! None of that story mattered, all I cared about was how Ash interacted with his pokemon and his friends. Then Ash dumped his old pokemon off and left my favorite friend behind to go on a new adventure, so I just kind of lost interest after Johto. However watching this video kind of makes me sad I did. I think if the younger me had pushed through the changes I think I would have enjoyed this season allot as a kid and got really invested in Ash's new team. I would have loved Ash's Treeko as a kid, from the clips you showed he looked aggressive! But it is what it is. I kept playing the games for a bit after this, but around the time Gen 4 released I was going into middle school and kids around me kind of had the mindset that pokemon was only for little kids, so I kind of just fell out of the series all together due to peer pressure. I completely missed Gen 4 and 5. Then when Gen 6 came out I had just graduated from highschool and had a new group of friends who either never gave into that pier pressure back in the day or just didn't go through it talking about how much fun they where having. It was then that I started really learning about strategies and more competitive game mechanics that I never picked up on as a kid, you know, cause I was a kid. So I picked the series back up with Gen 6 and have been playing the games ever since. So with that being said, I'm especially excited for your next couple videos in this series. I played the Gen 4 remakes that came out a little while back so I have an understanding of what happens in gen 4 now, but I still don't know much at all about Gen 5 other than I think maybe PETA is the bad guy, or something like that. And thats as far as the games go, by this point I was so far detached from the anime I don't know If I've ever even seen footage of the Gen 5 anime. Like I know I've at least seen Dawn and her Piplup before, so I know i've at least seen a few scenes from Gen 4, but I don't know a THING about 5. I'm very excited for you to teach me a thing or 20!
This was the era of the show I remember most growing up, I’d get the previous stuff from blockbuster but this is what was on tv. I remember thinking edgy Treeko was so cool lmao. Edit: and speaking of cool, I also watched the Lucario movie over and over, he was instantly my favorite Pokémon
Man, these are very entertaining to watch. Didn't think I would find these interesting but here we are at episode 4 now. Definitely looking forward to the whole series.
I am enjoying these. I stopped at beginning of Hone as the only channel that was hosting Pokemon in my country, had been discontinued on TV and have no way to watch these now. You're the next best thing!
