Welcome to Standing Stone Kennels! In this video we show how to take a dog with an understanding of the whoa behavior through formal whoa training. Thunder has an excellent work ethic and loves to train, as well as has been introduced to the cue “whoa” through our positive pigeon drill and has had extensive hunting experience. Now it is time to collar condition him to the cue, “whoa”. We use 6 steps from start to finish with Thunder to complete his whoa training.
0:00 Intro
1:29 Step 1: Get Used To The Belly Collar
9:40 Step 2: Utilize Stimulation To Stop With The Belly Collar
14:35 Step 3: Introduce The Cue & Overlay The Belly Collar
17:38 Step 4: Avoid The Collar By Complying With The Cue
22:45 Step 5: Transition To The Neck Collar
31:10 Step 6: Remove The Belly Collar - Only Utilizing The Neck Collar

I watched many of your other videos on whoa training with the belly collar and I missed one critical thing in the other videos. My gsp would not move an inch after I put on the belly collar. I tried food and bumpers, which he loves both. Than I watch this video and put the belly collar on with plenty of room like you did. Man what a difference. I follow along with many of your video from the beginning (My dog is the same age as Thunder). With the foundation of the other videos I got pretty far with the whoa training. Thanks for the guidance.

What is the criteria to moving to these 5 step the dog already knows whoa? Taught threw free shaping or positive pigeon drill or some other method of teaching the que for those of us that don't have a ton of pigeons to throw you should be able to stop them verbally with no other means? Collar conditioning to a que that has already been taught? You guys rock thanks so much

Old video so hopefully you see this. How can I get my dogs excited about toys outside? We can play fetch in doors all day, but as soon as we are outside both of my GSP's don't give a crap about anything other than running around and chasing the smells all around them. Makes woah training and gun training hard. I can't get them more excited for a toy than the excitement they have for the nature around them.

I like it very much. Is the WHOA a replacement for the German Down Signal? Does that mean the dog has to do it immediately under all circumstances and stop, no matter what he is doing?
@StandingStoneKennels
@StandingStoneKennels 5 месяцев назад
Sorry, we don't have much experience with how the German Down Signal is used. We use whoa as a way to hold our dogs accountable to staying on point once they have established point. We can build on the basics of whoa later for more advanced steadiness.

Everytime I try this with my male no matter how loose or tight he thinks he’s in trouble and hides or lays down. Haven’t even done anything with the collar just trying to get him comfortable with it. I’ve half hitched him with a check cord and he doesn’t care about the cord around his flank but complete opposite when I put a flank collar on. He has a good understanding of woah but would like to clean it up

Training with e-collars is illegal in Germany ao I can't use these method. But it looks systematic at least.

My 7 month old comes back to me every time. I feel like the correlation between coming back and stopping when she gets to me is confusing her. She’s stopping so I am stopping the stimulation, but it also coincides with her coming to me, reinforcing that coming to me turns off the collar. I try walking away but she’s gets right on top of me. So far she hasn’t made the connection to stop before getting back to me.
@troyhodulik5542

Just remember, whoa is whoa and here is here. It can be confusing to the dog. There are different ways to help with this. I like to use a heel command and then give the whoa command with a slight pause and step off to get the dog to stop and stand still. If I can get the dog to do this, then I take another intermediate step and go to a 20' check cord and just let the dog walk around at will and work on the whoa command. By using the check cord, I can take up some of it to get closer to the dog and give a slight upward tug as a correction if needed. I also only use one (1) point of contact: the neck. My dog won't be running in the field with a belly collar. I avoid another transition step by having to go away from the belly collar. And remember: Whoa is just a command that means to stop and stand still. It has nothing to do with birds, bumpers, toys, balls, etc. Set your dog up for success. Break it down into little steps of success. Short leash; check cord; free running. Good luck and be patient and happy when working with your dog.

I find your comment about him being "wimpy". I have 2 puppies right now, a GSP and a Chesapeake Bay Retriever. If I scold the GSP for whatever transgression, he gives me a look as if trying to decide if he cares that I am not happy he has my sock. The Chessie acts as though mortified that Dad is not happy. She will pout that I told the GSP no. I always knew that dogs have different personalities, but to see you re-affirm this made me laugh.

Because if you have the dog trying to flush the bird when you do it can be a problem
@TheLZempir3

If the dog is too far away from you, flushing the bird now it will get away. Or if dog is approaching danger like other shooters, or animals, or maybe it's just the other dog's turn.

I just had to euthanize my 12 year old GSP. I’ve had multiple sporting group dogs. My GSP “Dottie” was the BEST dog I’ve ever had. She loved to catch frisbee. I miss her sooo much. GSPs are always so eager to please. I thoroughly enjoyed training her. I can’t wait to get another one.

Not necessary to use collar conditioning to produce tremendous results. With a good understanding of Positive Reinforcement, a good trainer can obtain better results. Collar conditioning is a step backward in time with training.

Thanks for the opinion! Do you train hunting dogs? Or any other type of working dog?
@troyhodulik5542

E-collars are excellent tools for training dogs. The trainer owes the animal the responsibility of using the tool correctly. The command needs to be taught and understood first and then the collar over-laid on top of the foundational training. For us hunting dog enthusiasts, the e-collar combined with line-of-sight telemetry can actually be a life saving tool. The e-collar is now a mile long leash that humanely assists with commands. In my 20 years of using e-collars I can attest to my dogs actually getting excited when I bring the collars out because they associate them with having fun and going hunting. They have never cowered or run away from putting them on.

@@StandingStoneKennels My training experience goes back 60 years. I train Upland and Waterfowl dogs. I have used all forms of training to include your method. My main philosophy has evolved from primitive harsh metdods to using Positive Reinforcement Training. My observation of many dogs trained with methods that employ compulsion have developed damaged dogs. Over the years, I have repaired many dogs trained with collar conditioning. I am an advocate for positive training. Respectively submitted, W. Dale Hubbard, Ph.D.

@@DrDaleHubbardPhD I’m 70 years old been training English pointer’s since I was 10 years old also have trained a lot of retrievers. I agree with you. Most trainers destroy good prospects with improper E collar use and not positive reinforcement
