As someone who grew up with this film more than the Gene Wilder film, I feel glad to see some love and appreciation be placed on this adaptation. I was gutted when I heard that this was hated, simply because it's well crafted, well acted and clearly made with nothing but effort to make it as faithful to the book as possible. And this was one of the first films (along with the Lord of the Rings trilogy) that made me aware of the process of filmmaking, so it will always have a special place in my heart. While I do enjoy the Gene Wilder film, this will always be my definitive adaptation of the book. And your previous video going over why this is the better movie is one of my favourites on RU-vid.

Adam Sandler and Dwayne Johnson being considered for the part of Wonka still really surprise me. Picturing them in that role is hilarious.

If this doesn’t prove that this one isn’t a remake, I don’t know what will.

Charlie ending with Wonka realizing family and social skills are better than all the money and power in the world alone is such a huge improvement from the Gene Wilder version that I'll always stand by Charlie.

The fact both Chocolate Factory AND Corpse Bride both released in 2005, both directed by Tim Burton, has 3 of the cast from both movies (Johnny, Helena & Sir Christopher Lee) and are both seen as classics by many is just astonishing. And those two weren’t the only 2005 films Christopher Lee was in, Revenge of the Sith released the exact same year.

The original violet scene they had planned was actually terrifying. They made an animatronic of her head and it's one of the most unsettling things I've ever witnessed.

I remember when I was in the 4th grade, we watched both versions and the book. I distinctly remember liking the book, being bored with the 1971 version, and falling in love with the 2005 version. I loved it so much that when I was a kid, I used to play it on Netflix at least once every other month.

I’m glad you’ve covered this film twice. This has always been one of my all time favorite films ever since my childhood. If I’m remembering right, I think I saw this film in theaters and it honestly was amazing to see onscreen. Unfortunately, like you said, it’s had bad faith criticism and reviews from folks who don’t know what they’re talking about from Doug Walker/Nostalgia Critic to Cinematic Venom and especially CinemaSins. Also, can we agree that the “remake” argument really needs to die? It doesn’t hold up logically and is quite honestly stupid.

I actually own a Charlie and the Chocolate Factory VHS. I found it at my local Goodwill a few years ago. I didn’t know it was a rare and expensive collector’s VHS now a days. I feel so lucky to own one.

Here in Sweden, this one is the one a majority of people know about. It has a fantastic dub, Julia Winter even DUBS HERSELF because she's part swedish. There are VERY FEW people who really grew up with the 71 film, mostly because it was never really marketed here and the dub... well, it was made like 20 years later and they didn't really care. The only other version we really know about besides the 05 film is the miniseries we did in the 80s over here, that was just a man reading out loud from the book with drawn pictures being shown. It's almost lost media now x) Not impossible to find, but also not that easy.

The darkness inherent in Charlie is what makes it sooo good. Tim Burton just brought it closer to the surface. I'm not sure if the original author actually realized what he created, if that is possible.

I was an extra in this movie and Tim Burton oversaw every scene - moving props, changing costumes. You could tell the passion he had for making it. It was filmed at Pinewood Studios in the summer of 2004, despite all the snow. All the interior sets were locked off, so you couldn’t have a sneak peek (and we were not allowed to keep any of the props, like pencils and notebooks) so all this background info. is very interesting and revealing, thanks for the insight!

A wonderful and well done video essay behind the making of "Charlie and The Chocolate Factory". And as someone who loves both the 2005 and 1971 version equally, I am glad that the former film is getting a positive reevaluation, and I am here for it after getting sick of people trashing HARD on it and calling it a remake of the latter film, which IS NOT!

As much as I grew up with the Wonka version, I much prefer the Charlie version. The Charlie and the Chocolate Factory version, as you said, is one of the most loyal film adaptations to the book. All that work really paid off with the entire cast and crew.

Your Charlie VS Willy Wonka video was the video that got me into this channel. I had written off the Charlie version like many people did but that video gave me a new appreciation for the movie, causing me to properly watch it (and I ended up really enjoying it). Yes! I’m so excited that you posted another story, about the reason why Tim Burton’s adaptation is the TRUE and faithful version of the story! I can’t tell you how much I appreciate you for doing this. I grew up watching Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and when I finally read the book by Roald Dahl-Burton’s adaptation was the most faithful adaptation with little departures. Despite the drastic departure at the end.

The Michael Jackson part was interesting since a part of me does get a good laugh out of imagining what the King of Pop would’ve been like as Willy Wonka.

As much as I like the 1971 adaptation starring Gene Wilder, the 2005 adaptation starring Johnny Depp was still great. It was a more faithful adaptation of the original book. Tim Burton did a lot right with his version. He kept Charlie’s father in the movie. Danny Elfman’s score for the movie was great as well. The Oompa Loompa songs also incorporated Roald Dahl’s writing in the songs. Although Wonka’s backstory was an odd inclusion in my opinion, I understand why the filmmakers added it.

To your point…The Peter Jackson Lord of the Rings movies are kinda a remake of the old animated ones seeing as how a good chunk of the storyboards and frames of Jackson’s are EXACTLY like the animated ones 😅

I watched the remake first. But then I watched Willy Wonka a few years later and I had fun watching it. I think both films are equally great. I like your video with the comparison. Fun fact: Johnny Depp was originally gonna have long hair to look more book-accurate. That was scrapped because they thought it looked too similar to Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Carribean.

I grew up with both versions so I like both of them equally.

Honestly it took me song long to watch this movie in full. The reason being Violet, the blueberry transformation terrified me as a kid so I always changed the channel when that came on and never switched back. Now as an adult I love this movie and its darkness. Though said transformation still creeps me out but I can watch it.

Interesting to see a new Charlie video after the first suddenly blew up. Funny enough, that was the video that introduced me to your channel about a year ago. I love how in depth you go with these videos without them becoming bloated with filler or pointless tangents and you manage to make your points well and with these history of media videos you manage to make the topic engaging. I have kind of a funny history with this movie myself. I never really saw the Stewart adaptation outside of a few bits on TV so while I was familiar with the general idea of the story, it was the Charlie one I fully watched first (amusingly enough it was on one of those rare VHS tapes because I first watched it through a rental place which mostly had VHS) and I remember being somewhat underwhelmed. When it came on DVD, my dad got it and when I would see him, I watched the movie over and over (also watching all the bonus features) and by mid 2006 it may have been my favorite movie, but eventually I lost interest and sort of forgot about it. I would later see the Stewart version through and record it and over time that became my preferred version. I would later find your video on the two movies and give Charlie another chance. Sadly, I couldn't get into it, but I did appreciate it for being the passion project it was.

I remember this film getting me through a rough flu season. Always had that opening on replay. Remember the chocolate bars that were sold in conjunction, that the DVD included a smell-a-rama of one of the candy bars, potentially with a golden ticket. Sadly I didn't get it.

I agree. I prefer the 2005 film better than the 1971 film. The first film didn't had much attention as the 2005 film. Plus, the former was made during the dark age of media.

I’m probably in a minority of people that think both films are great. Even though I prefer the wonka version, there’s so much that the Charlie version does better such as the effects, style, music, and characters like the other children and Charlie’s grandparents. The Charlie version is a much better adaptation of the book, but I do like that the wonka version wasn’t just a paint-by-numbers screenplay of the book. I think a lot of the changes the film made worked in the context of that film. I like that all 3 versions of this story tell this story in vastly different ways and I think that’s rare to see from more recent remakes/adaptations

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was just a commercial to sell more Wonka bars, and other Wonka confectionaries. As the Wonka brand was failing. The movie didn't help revitalize the brand, as nestle sold the Wonka to ferrero in 2018. They might, probably, or most definitely will bring back the Wonka bars for the new movie.

I first started with the Charlie Version, I didn’t know about the Wonka until a few years later I respect the Wonka One but to me I love the Charlie Version, maybe is Nostalgia or maybe it’s Passion I don’t know and I Respect Both Movies in their own unique way.

I personally prefer the Willy version because I like the warmer energy Gene Wilder brings. I don't do well with darker stuff so parts of the original book and the Charlie movie were a bit uncomfortable for me. In fact I kinda gave up on reading Roald Dahl's books after I tried reading The Witches and yeah XD But I do acknowledge that the Charlie version had better production and was more faithful to the book, and I appreciate that you like it ^^

As I’m typing this, I’m 31, and while I loved Willy Wonka as a kid, I had also read the original Charlie book as that same kid. In fact, I actually read it about two years before the Tim Burton movie came out, so it was still fresh in my mind by the time I saw it. And when I did, I knew that it was much closer to the book than Willy Wonka was. I think it’s also fair to say that I liked both movies, but after seeing your Charlie videos and really taking in the history and the differences between the films, I’d personally pick the film Dahl would’ve liked most to watch first.

I went into this movie as a joke, from what I had heard about it, that’s what it was. When I came out of it, I was pleasantly surprised, it far exceeded my expectations! Definitely better than the old one.

I grew up with both Wonka and Charlie, but I actually saw this one first. When it came out, I liked it, but my opinion on it changed over time. Up until very recently, I didn’t like it because I felt it was dark, uncanny, and moody. However, I have gained a lot more respect for it in the last year or so.

As an adaptation Charlie is better, as a movie, Willy Wonka wins.

I personally like both the 1971 film and the Tim Burton version equally even though I know both have a few flaws.

I would get so much hate if I ever said that Gene Wilder's Wonka freaked me out. Like, ew, stop touching, stop being overfriendly. 😂 I don't hate it, don't get me wrong, but even now, his version of Willy Wonka still creeps me out, and he never comes across as the isolated genius to me. Johnny Depp's Willy Wonka is weird, awkward, charming and exceptionally amazing only when he is talking about candies. He is exactly the Wonka that I expected to see. I think I'm going to start using your Lord of the Rings counterargument from now on whenever someone says Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is a remake 😂

As someone who loves Willy wonka, hearing you praise Charlie and about how it’s superior to Willy wonka got me thinking, this must be how Kubrick fans feel whenever I tell them that I prefer the 1997 mini series adaptation of the shining over the Kubrick version.

NGL, It would have been interesting to see a version directed by Terry Gilliam. Though Tim Burton was definitely the right choice.

Why didn't Liccy Dahl let Tom Shadyac direct charlie and the chocolate factory, and let Jim Carrey as Willy Wonka? And why didn't Terry Gilliam got to direct the film as well?!?

You made some errors: for one, Scott Frank *DID* produce a full script that you can read on the Internet Archive, and it is... odd, to say the least. And the Oompa songs from the original film are not repetitive, as the orchestrations are changed for each one; Violet's song is somber like a requiem, Veruca's has a cuckoo-clock theme, and Mike's is meant to sound "epic", as it is the final song of the entire movie.

As much as I love Tim Burton and Johnny Depp, this movie didn't do it for me. I didn't think Johnny Depp was right for Wonka, like he didn't want to be their. I just felt annoyed by his portrayal. I would have gone with Jim Carry, Christopher Lloyd, Robin Williams, or Eric Idle. Hell, Eric Idle did an audio reading of the book.

Honestly I'm kind of okay with calling LOTR a remake of Ralph Bakshi's movie. I think any time you're adapting something that has already been adapted before (not to mention adapted notably) you're always going to at least subconsciously think about that prior adaptation. In that very example there are references and homages to the Bakshi film in Peter Jackson's trilogy. Even this movie borrows small things that existed in the 1971 movie but not the book, such as the nationalities of the other kids. There's always going to be an inherent comparison between different adaptations. It's like how we can compare the Dark Knight Trilogy to the Michael Keaton films. That all being said it's of course valid to enjoy both, only one, or neither

Here in Brazil the 71 movie is not as well loved as the 2005 one. I remember at some point Cartoon Network would air the newer one and Nickelodeon (or maybe it was Disney Channel) aired the old one roughly at the same. Could you imagine the whiplash I had?

I own the Blu-ray release. It sucks. There is no menu, it plays instantly. To open the menu, you have to press the menu button. And the arrow buttons just don’t work. So, I can’t use the bonus features.
