@@ProfessorAlexSilver I wish in journeys they bring back paul and his torterra and since paul ain't so bad anymore ash can just for torterra bring back and since Paul's torterra was like a mentor to him they both can have a battle WHERE torterra loses of ash and goes into a depression arc where ash realizes how sad torterra is and he finally realizes to focus on the best parts of the pokemon and focus on making them what they are good at and then after recovering from grief torterra finally shows ash what's he's made of and then we get 3 vs 3 ash vs paul in the world coronation series WHERE torterra finally surpasses his mentor like Paul's torterra
@@ProfessorAlexSilver I also wish torterra had more screen time since it was one of those pokemon of paul who also cared and didnt care at the same time
I really liked Paul's Torterra putting his trainer's feelings aside to help a fellow Grass turtle in need. He saw Grotle struggling with this new body he's not accustomed to and tries to help him find strength within something seen as a weakness. That's pretty respectable and really shows that Pokemon are more than just mindless pets but free thinking beings that can make their own decisions.
That would've been nice to see Paul's Torterra teaching Grotle on how to use his new bulky body to his advantage. As seen when Paul used Torterra in their first full battle, Torterra had strong attack & defense with strong ranged attacks that make up a lack of speed.
Paul’s Torterra is not only an absolute badass but a surprisingly sympathetic Pokemon. Not many Pokemon can give the impression of being close in KOing Cynthia’s Garchomp and I love how it helped Ash’s Grotle in how to battle with its new body. I also like the fact that Paul wasn’t angry about helping it despite being against his orders. I used Torterra in my Legend Arceus playthrough and I’m glad I did! Thanks so much for the video, Professor!
Paul's Torterra is like that friend that's known you for so long they have no problem calling you on your BS even when it makes you look bad because they care about you and want you to be better.
Always was fascinated with Torterras relationship with Paul. It seems to be the only pokemon he cares for. Shame it got shoved to the side for pauls electabuzz.
It was paul and his tortara that made me love tortara and other grass starters and why with grass is in my top five favorite types. Sorry for any missed spelled names
Paul's torterra looked like the most experienced badass at that time around 2010 and his personality very well complimented Paul's. Truly one of the best rival's Pokemon.
Paul’s Torterra best moment in the anime for me is Paul commanded his Torterra change direction with stone edge against Chimchar epic and surprising. Paul is great at using right move set for his Pokémon choosing the correct move to deal with it’s weakness against other trainers Pokémon who could exploit them.
Paul’s Torterra was super cool and solidified my love for the grass type! Definitely a shame it didn’t get more screen time tho. It was such a great Pokémon and showed what Ash’s Torterra coulda been.
Fun fact: Neither Paul or Ash's Torterra were shown using Earthquake in the anime because in the prior generation Earthquake was banned in the anime after an earthquake in Japan. This along with the limited other ground type options at the time is why Torterra was not shown to know a ground stab move. If Paul's Torterra were to return it now has more options such as Earth Power, Bulldoze, High Horsepower or best of all the new stab its species learns in Legends Arceus Headlong Rush.
@ProfessorAlexSilver earth power isn't banned so the anime could of given them both that Plus headlong rush is a thing now so that could of been a better move too
My guess is torterra went through a similar problem after evolving into grotle from tertwig were he lost his speed and felt depressed about it but over time he learned to use defense and waiting for the right moment to strike to combat his lack of speed and got stronger because of it and this is why he helped grotle out after evolving
When Paul faced ash with his torterra It literally refused to lose it took so many hits and still managed to take them all It will be great seeing a video featuring his hunchkrow tho It was a beast aswell
Oh yes Paul’s Torterra, I know I mentioned the other day that it helped Ash’s Grotle change its battle tactics. It taught it to relay more on defense than speed since it was too heavy to move faster like it used to. But with Rock Climb it was able to move a little bit faster. Torterra beat Ash’s Gliscor and lost against Cynthia’s Garchomp.
Personally, I like Paul's Torterra over Ash's (Once it evolved), I like the respect it had for Ash's Grotle at the time. One of my favorite moments of Sinnoh for sure, and shows that these Pokémon of rivals actually have a heart and personality, outside their trainer's. I wish it was used more often and developed more of a friendship with Ash's.
Paul torterra Vs ash's should be a thing on the League..maybe losing to another torterra is better than losing to a pokemon that you have type advantage against..
@@madnessarcade7447 I didn't say Ash's had a good heart. You misunderstood what I said. Ash's Torterra was a waste once it evolved, compared to Paul's.
I always found it weird that Paul never used Torterra on screen in the Sinnoh League. I think Torterra would have made Ash’s battle with him much more difficult.
@@ProfessorAlexSilver yes but Paul has an overall better team if they ever introduce a Mega evolution for Torterra Paul should be the first one to get it .
Torterra is Ash's Pikachu done right,it has experience battling in gyms/leagues of other regions alongside Paul. It's fully evolved and it doesn't reset like Pikachu in past series.
This always gives me fun memories as when I played my first ever Pokémon game, pokemone diamond, torterra was my first choice and has remained a fan favourite of mine ever since. Thanks for brightening my day with this video
I'm very much surprised Torterra didn't get much screentime in DP. It's Paul's starter after all and probably was his ace when going through the other regions. It didn't even get to take part in the final battle where we could've gotten a really cool mirror match with Ash's.
I don't like how Paul used entirely new team against Ash in the league just to be "unpredictable", like seriously? You're in the top 4 of the league, just 2 trainers away to become the champion and you fucked it up by not using your powerhouses 🤦
@@WheelStart those were his powerhouses It’s symbolic of Paul not really making a bond with his team This is contrasted by Ash using the exact same team that lost to Paul last time
I love Paul and his Torterra! Paul understands Torterra as a Pokemon and the Battle style mostly associated with Torterra, and Paul perfected this style to a Top level in Battling, which is further shown when compared to Ash and his Torterra, as soon as Turtwig evolved into Grotle, when Ash couldn't adapt on the spot, and even failing to bring out Torterra's true power in all of its major Battles. Ash's Grotle's best Battle was against Candice's Sneasel. Paul actually said in the Turtwig evolution episode, "You have no IDEA how much Grotle's CHANGED!!!", Referring to how he has raised his Torterra from a Turtwig, which Ash confirms he knows later on that Torterra is Paul's first Pokemon. I'm predicting when it comes to Pokemon Journeys, I honestly think Paul will return, and Battle Ash in the WCS, and Paul will use Torterra, knowing, Ash has never defeated his Torterra before... and this battle, Ash will win, with Paul's Torterra being the last Pokemon of Paul's to go down. After all, look at Ash's Team and the moves they currently know. Gengar with Ice Punch, and Dracovish with Ice Fang, Sirfetch'd with Fury Cutter, and Dragonite has a great typing for Torterra too, as well as being able to attack from a distance too, since we know Torterra Battling style really well... Take the opponents attack and strike back hard, be hard to do that against Dragonite. So basically, Ash's current team is stacked when it comes to Battling against Paul's Torterra. Lol
I know I mentioned this before in a previous video, that I’m not a big fan of Paul but the Pokémon he has on his team are interesting in my opinion plus I do like his tortera and his storyline is interesting as well! So there are parts of him that I like and His brother Reggie is cool too, Plus I would like to see you do a video on ashes tortera as well. Infact I think it is safe to day that that Paul’s torterra is better than ashes interms of its powers and yes I said what I said in the comments and it’s all my opinion so no one needs to worry no one has to agree you just so you. I respect Paul for chasing after his dreams like every other trainer plus if Paul did return then I would like to se him redeem himself and maybe we will see tortera mega evolve and Paul even be a kanto champion and I would love to see Paul challenges ashes strongerst Pokémon like charizard infernape, and even ashes tortera so Needs a redemption and to get stronger too. So I think it’s Likely for Paul to return sometime in journey? And he would tell ash he won the battle frontier and would be impressed with how strong ash had gotten over the years after ashes making it farther in Kalos and being a hero their Paul gains more respect to ash for that. That would be neat to see In my book. And let’s also not forget the characters development he got back In the episode he faced agents Brandon too. That has to be one of my favorite moments of Paul plus meeting his brother and ash winning up agents Paul and even the episode were ash stood up for him when a big crowd laughed at him after he lost a battle to Cynthia! Those were good moments in my opinion. 😊👍
Torterra is one of the Pokémon that lived up to its title as Paul's strongest Pokémon due to being his starter but doesn't stack out like Electivire here & the way it motivated Ash's Grotle after it evolved to its defense as an offensive to take hits & Torterra should've seen Ash's Torterra now fully evolved to congratulate it but could teach more on being a better attacker after Ash's Torterra taken some major losses against stronger opponents which would help motivate Ash's Torterra to become a better battler!
@@ksoundkaiju9256 I always found that weird that Paul basically used a brand new team against ash instead of some of his tride and true aces like honchcrow, torterra, ursurang, and magmorter
@@joshfarmer8408 I think because Paul knows ash will know how to counter them regardless. He knows ash isn’t dumb he just doesn’t like his training style.
I just recently discovered your channel, and I really REALLY love the concept. A real life Pokémon professor and the videos being classes. :) Thank you for taking us down memory lane regularly and so thoroughly ❤️ (also doesn’t hurt that the professor is such a sweet and handsome one… or is it just me? 🤔) Well! Thank you anyways (again) and keep the great content coming! Subscribed ✅ and 🔔 is ringing reliably ✨
Professor Silver! Another great video. Torterra is pretty awesome. Didn’t use it much when I played Platinum back in the day. As much as I love grass Pokémon, I used Empoleon for all three sinnoh games heh.
I liked that Paul’s torterra was actually kind and opposite Paul’s personality instead of just bullies like the other Pokémon likely because it knew Paul before he became a cynical bully
Good point! I like how it was shown attacking Chimchar as well though. It shows that it still has a lot of Paul's traits. Regardless of how nice it was to Grotle, it was still a bit mean in Glory Blaze
I had always thought of Electivire as Paul's true ace. I do like the uniqueness of Torterra in comparison to other Pokemon of Paul's, especially when it came to the mentoring bit with Ash's Grotle.
I think Electivire was the Pokemon that Paul intended to be his star battler _in the Sinnoh region._ Torterra, being his first teammate of course already had multiple regions worth of experience, but considering that Paul first debuted with Elekid, it seems reasonable that he recently captured it upon coming back home, liked it's energy, and it lived up to his standards.
While Electivire was Paul's ace, torterra is right up there with his most valued members. Another being his honchcrow, who has been with Paul for a long time as well.
@@ProfessorAlexSilver Honchkrow certainly did have a rivalry with Staraptor, and it certainly would've been nice to see them have a rematch or actual battle. Could cover Honchkrow in another future video, given that electivire and torterra were covered.
Like Gary's Blastoise and Richie's Charmander, technically every trainer that Ash battles should have a regional starter! Of course, Paul travelling through the three other (at the time) known regions is a bit problematic. For example, a Turtwig competing for Kanto or Johto gym badges should have cause quite the stir!
Very awesome video, and I thoroughly enjoyed your review on Paul's starter. Torterra has been my favorite Pokémon since it debut and put up a great fight against Cynthia'a Garchomp. Similarly to as you said towards the end of the video, I do wish Paul's Torterra deserved more love and got shown more since Ash's was overlook by Infernape and Barry showcase Empoleon pretty well. It would've strengthen how awesome Sinnoh's starters really were all together.
I personally think that Torterra is one of the more underrated grass type starters. For me personally, I always liked it for it's unique type combination and great design, though I might be slightly biased towards it due to it being the first starter I played through a gen4 game with
Am I the only one who assume Paul's torterra had the same problem with its speed when it evolved into grotle and maybe that's another reasons why he felt bad for ash's turtwig when it evolved into grotle. I'll admit that would be a good reason
Paul probably didn't gripe at Tortera because he saw that Tortera was remembering what it was like for them when he got slower. He's also his 1 st Pokémon so that would be another big part of it
Paul's Torterra was actually a pretty chill dude. Didn't trash talk as much as Electvire and taught Grotle how to fight properly. It's a shame we never saw a fight between his Torterra against Ash's Torterra.
U know just like cynthia , paul had eleven types on his team 1. Aggron ( steel/ rock ) 2. Gastrodon ( water / ground ) 3. Drapion ( dark / poison ) 4. Froslass ( ice ghost ) 5. Ninjask ( bug / flying ) 6. Electivire ( electric) His team was immune to 6 types If electivire were fighting type then he would have had twelve types.
I look at Paul's Torterra as the friend that's known you since you were little and has no issue calling you out on your BS even if it makes them look bad as well because they want you to be a better person
Iny my series Both Chaud and Zak caught turtwigs and they both evolved at the same time signifying the bond of the turtwigs and the brotherly friendship between Zak and Chaud showing both of them to be the best trainers they can be.
Paul's Torterra is awesome. I wish we saw it more. I wonder how it became strong since the beginning. I know it had a lot more battles but we only saw few of it onscreen. I gladly take its 75% win rate. Great video
It sad thinking Paul torterra has an bigger win record than ash torterra, it also kinda weird how we only got the one scene with ash grotle and paul torterra, could of been an nice mentor or rival
It's a shame paul's torterra is not shown as much as his electivire I would love a battle between ash's torterra and pauls As it's my favorite sinnoh starter
I totally misjudged Torterra. I thought being the ace of Paul would make it as cruel and brutal as Paul. Just goes to show what Ash says is true. You can’t judge a Pokémon by its trainer. I wish Paul’s Torterra had encountered Grotle again after evolving into Torterra itself. It could have been a great opportunity for Ash’s Torterra to show it how far it had come and ends it’s time on the show on a positive note instead of a punching bag.
I was surprised we didn't get to see it in the Sinnoh League, but I'm sure you are correct about it putting up a fight against Regirock! I don't know if it would have pulled out the win for sure, but I like to imagine that it would have, or it would have ended in a double knock-out!
I would’ve love ash to have brought out Charizard as one of his returning Pokémon to the Sinnoh league! I wonder what Paul’s reaction would’ve been to the original Ace
I honestly feel that Paul's Torterra was underutilized during it's time in the anime, especially seeing just how few battles it wound up actually participating in on-screen. That said, it definitely seemed like it was one of Paul's most powerful and reliable Pokemon, especially since it's only loss was to a Pokemon that just so happened to be owned by a champion (although I personally always felt it seemed unrealistic for it to be one-shotted by a brick break attack). It would also have been very interesting to see more of Torterra, and it could've even been utilized to show a different side of Paul that we don't normally get to see, so it definitely feels like it has untapped potential in that regard; the only reason I can think of that they gave his Electivire more focus is because it was shown off in Paul's first appearance
Losing to a single brick break was pretty weird yeah But when I saw that same garshomp OHKOing lucian's bronzong with a giga impact I understood that it would have wrecked any opponent at that time
