From kariton to a small SM shop in Escolta Mla. How can I forget the man who gave me candy whenever I visited my auntie who was working with him as a saleslady. I was 8 when I first saw him staring at me w/ a serious face. According to my auntie she's been asked who we were and why we dropped by. The next time I saw him he stood up from near the cash registry where he used to sit and came towards extending a candy to me w/ a meek smile on his face. I never thought that this old man will be one of the richest man in Asia and in the world.

lol you people are so gullible that you gobble up rags to riches stories easily. Henry Sy was never poor. He had access to banks and capital loans from Chinese banks. He was well connected and allowed him to buy up shoes at the start at wholesale prices and allowed him to go abroad to study foreign malls. No one poor person can easily have access to loans and capital from banks or go abroad easily. It's like saying Bill Gates was just an ordinary guy who got rich because he was smart when he founded Microsoft or Elon Musk was a nobody immigrant from South Africa who got rich by his determination and inventing Paypal. Bill Gates' dad was the head (Director) of Planned Parenthood in America which allowed him to be sent to an expensive private school while Elon Musk's parents were owners of diamond companies in South Africa.

Rags to riches stories make up for inspiring stories and allow ordinary people like us to dream that we will become like "them" one day but the truth is far more boring - they were already rich and well connected that allowed them to propel themselves further to the top. Poor people rarely become rich no matter how hard they work. Then again, we need gullible people to work hard for our masters so that one day, we might get "rich" too. After all, these people did it. Why couldn't we, right?

connections come from field and social experience; what separates you from both start-up entrepreneurs and family conglomerates are that you simply find ways to justify your incompetence, stick with dreaming because it seems that's the only thing you know how to do best. "Henry Sy was never poor, " simply forgetting that both Philippines and China were, after the 2nd World War, devastated economically and rebuilding was a fierce period. Just because one trend is applicable to one story does not mean everything else started in the same manner, it's your tendency to appear "woke" and completely neglect certain aspects of the story, whether it be poor education / comprehension or simply pessimistic overview of your own financial situation causing you to depend on faulty generalization. Working as hard as you ever could doesn't mean you'll magically be able to rake in surmountable profits, what makes you think the wealthy are single individuals raking in profits by themselves and not making huge gambles in decisions to get to where they are now? If your only connections are other poor people who wither away with thinking there's no hope in life then what would that contribute to you? You may not come remotely close to being as insanely rich with the same huge luck in payoffs these rags-to-riches individuals have, but the least you could do is prevent yourself from drowning below the margin with only the dreaming and idolatry of rich people's lifestyles thinking "someday" or "never" either way.

The best thing with Henry Sy is that he did not established SM in China as soon as he got rich... he appreciated the fortunes that philippines gave him... and gave it back to her. Kudos

Well yeah. I would also do the same if I was Henry Sy. Because before China became a superpower, like after the war and before 1980's, China was harsh and poorer at that time compare to Philippines. Philippines allied with USA, a Capitalist country, while China allied with the Soviet Union, a Communist Country. Connect the dots and add in some campaigns that were bad for China at that time like "The Great Leap Forward". During and the end of the Marcos era (1965-1986), maybe that is the deciding factor that maybe he should start building SM in China and during that time, China has grown a lot due to opening up to foreign trade and investment and implementing free-market reforms in 1979 while Philippines Economy declined. Maybe he sees something in the Philippines than in China that we don't know but I would guess is that, SM had no competitions in the Philippines yet that will undermined SMs' power, plus he is already in the Philippines so why travel to China when you have established your roots in Philippines and starting a new business abroad would be challenging when you also have major problems at Philippines that can affects his business. Overall, too much going on in his plate. Or maybe as the saying goes (I made this btw), "Why be at the bottom of a food chain in a developing country (China) when you can rule here (Philippines) as kings."

China now have an authoritarian regime Philippines had an authoritarian regime Given the same period of rule... why did we not became rich like China if we are richer than China before? It is not the form of govt that make a country rich... it is based on the vision of a leader...whether to enrich himself and his family or to enrich the nation...we had a chinese family ... their vision is not that much selfish...yet we have chosen to become dumb by click farms and trolls...

Its awesome to hear about the history of this mall chain. Being in a city that took years to have its smaller SM come to be, it was quite exciting going to a bigger city that had this mall so I could taste the experience of strolling in one of them.

Tatang as Mr. Sy was fondly called by young Tsinoys, was publicity shy. His photo was rarely published. In fact he would ask the media not to include his photo in news items about SM. No wonder Mr. Sy was able to roam around his malls incognito then with only an aide or bodyguard with him. No mall goer or customer and even sales staff would ever think that the old man checking merchandise around is in fact the mall owner. Even in that small Chinese resto in Pasay Road where he usually dined, nobody would recognize him. And he rode in his old Renault sedan rather than a Benz. I miss Tatang, my former 'boss'

I will always remember SM Makati being the first SM I ever went to as a kid. I used to live around the boundary between Makati and Manila and mum would constantly take me to Ayala/Glorietta then head down to SM after. Those were my favourite memories as a kid, also going to Enchanted Kingdom as a 7 year old with my cute lil Asian kid haircut

Trivia: SM City Davao became one of the 3rd most oldest Davao mall after Gaisano Mall Davao Bajada in the 2nd place, and 1st place as Victoria Plaza (now NCCC Mall VP)

Cool. ur description is just same as my research. but there are some questions: 1. Sy's father owned sari-sari store, not shoe store. 2. Sy and lao kang opened Plaza Shoe Store and there are Park Avenue Store and Paris Shoe Store.......but im not really sure who is the partner.

here in the US, the megamalls are still okay, but the smaller and midsize malls are not. Because of online shopping, it has taken a large bite out of going to malls. I hope that SM can continue to watch trends and be proactive when needs to be. Certain big chain stores or brands will disappear eventually, as our spending habits also change. I can't say if this trend will happen in PH. I certainly enjoy huge malls and look forward to shopping in SM when I am allowed to be a tourist again in PH.

malling is part of Philippine culture, that is why it will continue to thrive, West sees malls as a place to buy stuff, before this pandemic hits malling in the Philippines is still a big part of life for any filipino family not just for buying stuff but a place for leisure, gathering, food tripping and many more, even worship (malls here has chapels), you could easily ask someone, that even if you they buy/order online, still they would visit malls to pass time, and when this pandemic ends malling will be back stronger and bigger.

@@grayxenon people in the US have different attitudes because of their schedules. But I know what you mean, I've seen everything you said. Americans are bypassing malls also for convenience. Malls that are almost half empty are discouraging and sad to go to these days. I do enjoy malls in PH. Good place to hang out and eat. Shopping is always fun too.

Before my childhood, SM Investments Corporation was established by the late Henry Sy, originally known as Shoemart, 12 years after the establishment of the country's largest media concessionaire ABS-CBN Corporation originally known as Bolinao Electronics Corporation which was founded by James Lindenberg in 1946 and later took over by Antonio Quirino in 1952 as Alto Broadcasting System and then took over by Eugenio López Sr. and Eugenio López Jr. as Chronicle Broadcasting Network in 1956. Bc they (meaning the main source of views concerning the Philippines) would rather focus on nonsense like celebrities, food eating aka mukbangs, and tacky stuff like foreign vloggers showcasing their weird opinions. When it comes down to what built the most successful businesses and other productive topics, all you will hear is the crickets chirping (a famous remark in the west).

Such a great and noteworthy family.. there is a similar pattern to those who have made great fortunes in the Philippines including the Ayala family whose first business in the Philippines was also selling a very similar addictive drug called alcohol whereas Henry started selling cigarettes 😢😅 the best thing to do is addict your customers . And then follow that up with buying real estate and opening banks and making darn sure you control all of the politicians..😅

Please check your fact. SM North location in EDSA cor. North Ave is not swampy i believe. In fact it was where government housing agency (PHHC/MMC/MMDA) office was formerly located being the center housing projects in QC; Project 2/3 Kamuning/ Kamias, 4 Cubao, 5/6 Vis Min, 7 SFDM and 8 GSIS/Roosevelt.

so the classic Henry Sy story was a myth? Many motivational speakers from the 2000's all quote the story that Henry Sy pushed his kariton of shoes along carriedo to sell and with much frugality and elbow grease turned that kariton into the brick and mortar shoe mart.
