Built in Brighton, 1875, the 'real' Stepney has certainly been through a lot! Take a look at some of its journeys through the years, and find out something you didn't know before!
Stroudley and the Terriers: 0:00
Stepney Is Built: 2:40
Change Of Century, Change Of Appearance: 4:35
2nd Risk of Scrap and the Southern: 5:28
Fenchurch and British Railways: 6:14
Saved By The Boiler: 8:00
Bluebell To The Rescue: 8:50
Awdry and a New Lease of Life: 11:00
Stepney's TV Stardom: 13:00
Static Stepney Today: 14:35
I've been intending to make this for a long while now for two reasons. One to have more content actually related to Stepney on the channel, but also to answer once and for all some of the questions I most frequently get about "Stephanie"... Even if you are familiar with real life steam engines, I hope you find an interesting fact you didn't know before!
Something that may also be of interest: An exclusive view of Rev. W. Awdry's ORIGINAL model of Stepney: • Awdry's Original Model...
Special thanks to Merry Hampton Productions, ilovetrains323 and Legomastr 365 for providing extra footage for this video, as well as all other content owners.

Stepney was always my favorite character as a kid, I was always drawn to his paint scheme and the cheerful little theme he had in Season 4 of the TV Series. I also loved Alec Baldwin's voice for Stepney in Season 5. I wish that they would do a BWBA episode where Thomas visits the Bluebell Railway and sees Stepney again, I mean after all, Britain is outside of Sodor and if Thomas can visit America then why not the UK?
@Terrier55Stepney
@Terrier55Stepney 4 года назад
Stepney's just far too loveable! It'd be very sweet if he returned for sure, if done properly. Mattel probably doesn't want to mix with the Bluebell and vice versa!
@chucke.cheesesmichiganprod1254
@chucke.cheesesmichiganprod1254 3 года назад
Technically Thomas is in the UK because he was built there as a mix of other engines, like the extended side tanks of the rebuilt E2s (basically one of Thomas' base classes which would form him into the way he is, other railways like the Dean Forest Railway and Thomas' original home railway, the London Brighton & South Coast Railway) and the coal bunker of the E1s for example.

Well now, that certainly was informative, you've brought historical information to an engine didn't actually know about. Especially with what Stepney smuggled out of Eastleigh which sounds a barrel of laughs! Superbly edited and well paced, you've brought limelight to Stepney's otherwise forgotten history. Well done indeed!

Stepney for me represents one of the first pieces of Thomas & Friends merch I ever had. My Granddad bought his ERTL model when I was very young (probably only just starting to show interest in the show). Of course since he's (Granddad not the ERTL) long gone now the model remains very important to me, and by extension, the real locomotive itself (but I do have a great love for small engines like the Terriers anyway).

Also, minor anecdote: When I went to the NRM for one of its steam galas, I was compoletely overwhelmed and had to sit down. When my head cleared, I'd realised that I had sat down staring right at Stepney, who was still in his BR Black livery at the time. I got to hop into his cab to take a look, which was really neat! (and interesting, as despite the exterior being black, his cab interior was actually a light cream colour). That really made my day.

Loved how well detailed and well researched this whole video was - I didn't even realize Bluebell was a real railway, I always thought Stepney had just been a made for TV train. Not big into the fandom nowadays you see, but I still remember the show fondly. I didn't even know about Thomas World. So I think I have two places ticked for visit next time I go to England

Thank you! It's lovely having a comment from someone more outside of the fandom! Simply just for a nice day out, steam railways in Britain like the Bluebell and Talyllyn or elsewhere are a brilliant place to visit. The wonders of a steam engine certainly keep you coming back for more.

No engine is unrestorable,over here in the states out in Colorado there was a 3 foot narrow gauge 4-6-0 (D&RGW 168) that they just got running after sitting in a park outside for almost 85 years ,so a engine that’s been running its whole life isn’t to bad,I also think that 168 and Stepney are only a few years apart in age.

A brilliant video about the 'real' Stepney - 10 out of 10 :). I had no idea that it worked on the long-closed Lee-on-Solent branch line, not far from my home. Also, I too have seen the portrait of Stepney in Thunderbirds episode "The Perils Of Penelope"; literally, just behind Lady Penelope when she has her coffee.

Wow, Stepney has certainly lived an exciting life. Thanks for doing this, I certainly didn't know the engine's entire story before. On a side note, I'm shocked Hit/The show tried to sue the Bluebell Railway. Of all the dumbfounded things!! It's really sad the royalty for Day Out events became too much. I understand companies needing to make a profit, but that seems a bit too far, especially from engines which helped make the series what it is.

When I went to the Bluebell Railway, 3 times to visit. The first time I went, was on a normal day out. And I'd recognised Stepney, a tank engine that used to be in the "Thomas the Tank Engine" books and videos. The second 2 times I went was on a Thomas event, one at Horsted Keynes and then the other at Kingscote, where I found Stepney with Percy, on the bay platform

I have a A1 class terrier and I made his personality as a engine that was lost in one of the scrapping sprees and survived to be preserved still in a A1 shape. I like to think that when he does stop too quick he sneezes the soot out of his funnel. He then was saved and lives happily on a little line with a horse wagon named Cathrin, two brake vans named Nigel and George, a Pug engine named Mathew, a Pecket engine that I don’t remember the name of and his four coaches.

I don't care if the real life Stepney is out of service, this character deserves a return to the show in CGI. Heck, maybe we can hope for Eric Idle to join the series because this guy has got such enthusiasm. Maybe he would have something in common with Thomas the Tank Engine.
