Blast Processing was actually a term coined by a sega engineer referring to ways to get more colors on the screen , and the marketing team took that phrase and ran with it as a way to describe its very fast CPU, which did really benefit the console.

PS1 I regretted not getting just due to the sheer volume of titles. I ended up with the N64 had a bit of a wrestling obsession. I'm a 40 yr old millennial, games was pretty much always good for me. I mean at 4 I played Atari and loved it because it was better than board games. But a year later I got an NES and I was amazed and loved it. Then sega Genesis, 64, PlayStation, PS2...etc. It was incredible to see the evolution of gaming since I was a kid. Corporations are pay to win is ruining gaming now though. I find I love indie titles on PC the past few years. Nintendo still has my heart of course.

Seriously epic video dude, I can't imagine working on something this long. Great job compiling all the clips / commercials and facts. One small thing I noticed, the Atari Jaquar controller you showed is the 2019 Pro version. It actually is a fanastic redesign, with more responsive buttons and the 3 addition buttons making it the first 6 button controller for the system. The original controller only had 3 buttons (plus the num pad allowed for overlays - AVP for example).

I'm going to assume that the 1984 film "Cloak and Dagger" was Atari's attempt at saving the 5200 and the video game industry. The movie is centered on a young gamer named Davey played by Henry Thomas who was a rising star fresh off his breakout role in ET. Davey spends most of his time playing video games. The plot of the film begins when Davey witnesses the murder of an FBI agent who with his dying breath gives him an Atari 5200 game cartridge that contains military secrets. Davey must now guard the important cartridge with his life and prevent it falling into the hands of an evil terrorist organization who are hell bent on getting ahold of the sensitive information it contains. Atari designed graphics for the fictional Cloak and Daggar game and got a lot of product promotion from their brand being featured in the movie. I consider it to be a timeless classic from my childhood. Unfortunately, it was released a year after the video game crash of 1983 which did not help it achieve the results Atari was hoping for. When you consider the poor performance of the Atari 5200 it is easy to see why the movie did little to restore public interest in video games.

Hey, I don't accept any slander of the Jaguar and 3D Saturn controllers, they're pretty good actually. In all seriousness though, putting that aside, this was a great and informative video and I found myself rewatching this multiple times! There are a few things I wanna comment on though. -I would personally like to give a special mention to the Atari 8-bit computer line. The first line, the 400 and 800, launched in 1979, pre-dating the Commodore 64, and even its predecessor, the Commodore VIC-20. The Atari computer was some really powerful stuff by the time it came out. For reference, it had the same architecture that would later be used for the Atari 5200; so much so that if you compare a game that's on both the 5200 and the 8-bit computer, they look and sound identical (The big difference, of course, is that you can play them with a controller that is good and actually works lol). It was the biggest competitor of the Commodore 64 (Well, in North America anyway. The story of early gaming in Europe is a whole other can of worms that throughout the 80's and early 90's, that region was very home computer centric). Though it wasn't as successful as the C64, the Atari computer line still did well in its own right, it's still loved by many, with the 400 getting the mini console treatment recently, and it has a larger library of early arcade ports (late 70's-1984) out of any other 8-bit system. -The term "Blast Processing" was thought to be referring to the Genesis' CPU being faster than the Super Nintendo's, which makes sense. Though it was later figured out that the term was referring to the system's CPU blasting data to the CRAM (Color RAM), allowing for things like mid-frame color palette changes (An example would be how water is displayed in Sonic 1's Labyrinth Zone) or having static images that display more color than the usual 64 color on-screen (If I rememeber correctly, I think Toy Story on Genesis used that trick for the story cutscenes). -While it is true that the SNES clears the Genesis when it comes to comparing the same game on both systems, there is a big advantage the Genesis has, specifically when it comes to platformers; a higher resolution. Which would result in the Genesis versions having a better view on what's ahead, while the SNES version is cropped. And in some cases, the sprites being cleaner. A higher resolution can sometimes affect gameplay, especially if you wanna see what's ahead of you. -Regarding that Jaguar controller, what you showed and described was actually the Jaguar Pro Controller. The regular Jaguar controller had 3 face buttons instead of 6. Also, when you were talking about the Famicom controller, at one point, at 42:24, you showed an image of what looks like an unofficial bootleg (there is no Famicom controller, official or licensed, that had SNES-style face buttons). -I noticed you didn't mention those "other" super consoles that came out between the SNES and the Saturn, like the NeoGeo CD (A system that played NeoGeo games on CDs that's meant to be a more cost effective way of playing them; though plagued by its slow load times), Commodore CDTV (The competitor of the CD-i, essentially an Amiga 500 computer in a VCR-like case and a CD-ROM drive), the FM Towns Marty (The first ever 32-bit console, basically a consolized version of the, at the time, powerful FM Towns PC) and the Amiga CD32 (The first non-Japanese 32-bit console, basically a consolized version of the Amiga 1200 computer with a CD-ROM drive and no keyboard), though I understand this video would be too long if those were brought up, but I still felt they are interesting in their own right. -As a Lemmings appreciator, it makes me glad you mentioned the hidden Super Scope feature in Lemmings 2 :) -Apart from oversaturation, another big reason why there wasn't a lot of third party support for the Jaguar was because it had a rushed, buggy and complicated hardware, and the development documents provided were also incomprehensible. Said reasons are also why a lot of Jaguar games don't look that much better than what you'd see in an SNES for example, cause they couldn't take full advantage of the system's capabilities. -You said the Saturn and 32X came out *side-by-side* in *North America*. While it is true they did come out a few months apart there, it's actually the Japanese Saturn release and the American 32X release that came out side-by-side (literally a day apart); not helped by the fact that Japan saw the release of the 32X around a month after the Saturn. -I do think it's important to mention how, up until the North American launch, the Saturn in Japan had actually briefly outsold the PlayStation (The former sold around half a million units by the end of 1994 VS the PlayStation's 300,000 units) -Regarding saving on N64 games, most N64 games actually had their saves stored in EEPROMs rather than batteries. The only games on this system that have a battery are games that have SRAM. (In which there are 14 of) -Here is an odd thing regarding the N64 Expansion Pak. The first US release of Space Station Silicon Valley is the only game that doesn't work with the Expansion Pak. After some point, the game will crash, so the Jumper Pak was required to play the game. This was fixed in the second US release and the European release. I know this was a really long read, I apologize for that. Just wanted to put out my own say of things, as well as make some corrections. Once again, great video! Hope you have a nice day ^^

honestly i kinda feel like console gaming is dying: 1) Playstation & Xbox release their games on PC now 2) with physical media dying off there is no benefit to get a console instead of buying games on PC 3) hybrids are getting more populair and they have all the benefits of being a handheld & PC/console 4) playing on PC is so much cheaper and accesable i used to be a Nintendo enjoyer but ever since i migrated to Steam and when i got my Steam Deck, i started to feel that consoles are just obselete. The only thing holding it back is the stereotype that you need to tinker a lot with PC games to get a good expierence which isn't really the case for me. Steam Proton has been able to fix most instances of a game not booting up for me.

@Sinn0100
@Sinn0100 2 месяца назад
"Number 2- There is no benefit to getting a console." I would say the cost of a console alone being far, far cheaper than a PC ends that number pretty quickly. Further, this notion that all console games are coming to PC is just a blatant lie. Tell me, master race, how do you intend to play GTAVI? Moving along. Not every game releasing on consoles is fully digital. We (fiancee and I) own an Xbox Series X, PS5, Steam Deck, and Switch right now. I would say a good majority of my games are on disc and can be played offline. I do my utmost to buy everything physical because I'm not paying full price to rent my games. I would also say there are quite a few games that have not appeared on a PC, I'm afraid. Lastly, your attempt at logically trying to spin a PC as being better than a console doesn't really hold water. You say that we should just get a PC instead but still present the very same set of problems. Why in God's glorious name would I pay double+ for pretty much the exact same experience with tons of DRM? Nope. Unfortunately, PC gaming is just as screwed as console gaming. You do realize once Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo takeover full distribution of all console games, they will be coming for the PC next. Microsoft has already openly admitted they wish to aquire Steam and are fine with performing a hostile takeover. The video game industry, as we know it, is heading for a monumental crash, and there is nothing that is going to stop it. No matter your platform of choice, it's all gone. Thankfully, I'm prepared for this little eventuality...are you?
@Sinn0100
@Sinn0100 2 месяца назад
Ooops... one more thing- The Steam Deck is neat but better than a console? It's better than the Switch but does not hold a candle to either the Series X or PS5. Although it is nice to play my Series X and PS5 games on our Steam Deck, that's pretty neat.
@Doktario_Mystario

@@Sinn0100 PC is cheaper than console because everyone already has a PC (just not neccesairly the most powerful on the market). And if where talking prices and DRM, you don't have to limit yourself to Steam and there are plenty of (free) open source games on PC

Man I'll never forget how jealous I was of the dude in my neighborhood who had the original Mortal Kombat for the Genesis and knew the Blood Code. My SNES copy was too dang squeaky clean lol!

You forgot about how 3D Blu-ray helped in 2010 and 2011 by making the PlayStation 3 the world's cheapest 3D Blu-ray player especially if you already owned the PlayStation 3 is the world's cheapest Blu-ray player. They also made the world's best 3D screen for gamers the PlayStation 3D TV. But what killed 3D shortly after that was the promised Super Bowl that was reneged on. It was it was abandoned because it was found that 70% to 90% of people would be unable to watch the Super Bowl if it was broadcast in 3D due to 2D incompatibility.

you're right I completely left out the whole 3D blue ray thing, that would have been a good segment to have in there

I think Microsoft is testing out streaming by streaming XBox Series games to an XBox One. They will probably start putting an XBOX app on TVs so you don't need a console and they will just stream it like Stadia did

Stadia would have been really cool if it wasn't so slow. I feel like once they iron out that process it will be really cool.

Like Ubisoft sayd...Peopel will love to pay for Games without owning them ...maybe .At the Moment it looks more like X Box Consumers dont buy Games and still have not more GamePass Subcribers on PC/ Konsole then Switch or PS .Didtn MS say something about if they dont get 100 Mill Subscribers till 2028 they leaving Field? and make Games for Switch and Playstation couse PC Gamers dont buy theyr Games 2 Times on Steam for GamePass Dudes?😅

To be honest, I only wanted to take a quick look because 3 hours is a bit daunting. I would recommend making the whole video into 6 or 12 parts. Don't get me wrong, I think it's really good, but I suspect you'll scare a lot of people off with 3 hours. The first 2 hours are much more detailed, which I liked. The last 20 years definitely went too fast for me. I watched the whole thing anyway;)
@calic737
@calic737 Месяц назад
I was actually thinking about that. I also thought about doing separate parts and then putting them all together as a big video after they're all out.

The 2600 was not off the shelf parts entirely, the TIA (Stella) or Television Interface Adapter was custom and designed by Jay Miner. Pretty decent video for a zoomer though ;)

The funny thing about Sega's blast processing is that they claimed that it made games like Sonic possible and that Nintendo couldn't handle quick scrolling. There's a prototype game called Bio Force Ape for the NES that is just as fast, if not faster. It's a game that was developed during the NES' lifespan, but was never officially released. Turns out the NES had blast processing all along!

2:02:00 I worked at a Blockbuster video the summer of 2000 and we rented tons of NES and SNES games. But NOT A SINGLE DREAMCAST GAME was ever rented and not a single console sold! The finally threw them in the bargain bin for pennies on the dollar! I still remember the games were only $3.99 and they still didn't sell!!!!

No matter how often I hear it said, it still feels surreal that the Gamecube was a financial failure. The Gamecube was the first home console I was allowed to have and at the time, it felt great to be a Gamecube owner - it had so many great games that also would go on to be well-remembered classics. So much so that it took me well into 2009 or 2010 to learn the console wasn't very successful. I never put much stock into the console wars mind you - it's just always such a stark dissonance.

I was so hyped to get my Gamecube. Metroid Prime and the Ocarina of Time Master Quest pre-order bonus thing were the ones I probably played the most. I was a teen in high school around that time and it was a fun thing to joke about which console was better. I don't think most people were that serious about it.

For games such as Street Fighter, I much preferred the sega 6 button layout vs the SNES layout. With the sega controller, you can hold the controller in such a way that your right hand fingers layed on the abc/xyz buttons. Capcom even made a 3rd party controller setup like that called the Capcom Pad Soldier for Genesis & SNES. This was not possible with the default SNES controller and required you to use the awkward left shoulder button. Modern controllers are not as bad since they have 2 buttons on the right shoulder.
