That scene of surge, in the dark, talking about “how he hurt US” brings me to that place all by itself. I’m surprised IDW can portray these issues without coming off as cringey or weird. I freaking love sonic 😊
The Complete IDW Volume 4 was definitely an emotional roller coaster. We go from seeing Surge and Kit suffering from the after effects of Starline’s abuse and manipulation; to Mecha Sonic feeling like he was neglected and thrown away by the world, but eventually learning to live for and give himself value. And finally ending it with the fall of Dr. Eggman’s Eggperial City which served as the setting for many of Volume 4’s stories.
I swear, I could listen to you monologue for 10 minutes talking about Eggman's glock. The emphasis you use on that word is absolutely hilariously entertaining.
Bold prediction for Doctor Starline: he's still alive... Aaaaad got amnesia, winding up in a small village where he recovers from whatever injury he received from an entire building falling on him. While there, he rediscovers his talent as a medical doctor and spends the rest of his days serving as the village doctor. That may sound familiar, but since he has no friends, and nobody cares about him in the slightest, there is nobody to help him spark his memory like he and Metal did for Mr Tinker.
Perhaps the concept art will be revived with a bottle stuck in its head...? Got a bottle stuck in head? An aide who rebelled against his master... similar to n brio
Watching this makes me want to delve into the sisterhood of belle and sage, but is it tough? The relationship between the abandoned child created by eggman's soft side and the beloved daughter created by Cruel's side seems to be quite deep.
Now that idw sonic is cannon I wonder if sage and belle will cross paths. What would their interactions be like? I think sage would feel the need to tell Belle that she, is the superior daughter but belle wouldn’t given a crap about that. Maybe belle would try to get sage to ditch Eggman to no avail.
Idw wasnt made to be Canon , it was declared to save idw from bankrupcty. I like the model of idw being Canon but i world be better idw comics didnt have plotholes , continuity wrecks , inconsistent depiction of the games , Idw deserves to be an animated tv show .
Surge that poor girl be suffering from PTSD or just PTS if those hallucinations of Starline are anything to go by and she also had her life/memories taken from her as well and her H2O bro Kit also suffered from trauma dew to that same Doctor's actions. Then again Whisper has been dealing with her own issues as well...yikes and even the Metal dude feeling abandoned and useless. This is some dark and sad stuff we're dealing with here😥. I haven't read these comics before but there's some interesting stuff right here. And the artwork looks pretty gorgeous in my opinion lots of expression and color.
Not sure, if Surge could feed off of Shadow’s Chaos Energy like how she could absorb the Wisps, Chaos Drives, and the energy from Metal, she might stand a good chance, especially since it’s hinted that she electrocuted Sonic to death briefly in the final fight before the Dynamo Cage exploded. I think Shadow is definitely the smarter fighter, but it’s overall probably a 50/50 result between the two as to who wins.
@@spiderssssssssssss Well to put it by this, Surge was able to take on Sonic in #56 because he injured his knee and was being too reasonable to her. I think Shadow would sweep Surge even with the Dynamo Cage because he is more aggressively experienced than Sonic. He could also take his off Inhibitor Rings which would turn the Tenrec into dust. It really depends.
Awesome video as always Nick! I think that Surge and Kit are the most tragic characters in the Sonic franchise (well, besides E-Gamma and Shadow himself). I actually feel sorry for them at points because they were forced into roles that they didn't want to be in. I can't wait to see more stories of them in future issues!
2:03:40 I really hope they play into this again when Mimic gets revealed as Duo and Lanolin realizes for the second time in a row her judgment cost a potentially huge loss for the Restoration. Like this could be a great character arc for her
Idk if I said this already, but Eggman’s city being able to rebuild itself reminds me of New Mobotropolis being powered by nanites. I know it’s not the same thing, but it’s fun to think about how cities being able to rebuild themselves used to be good for Sonic lol
Thanks you so much game apologist, you got me into sonic comics and i love surge so so much. These are great for driving to my college. Thank you so much
While Dr. Starline did some terrible things I am going to miss him. I love seeing another doctor question Dr. Eggman and another monotreme in the Sonic universe. Although what he did to Surge and Kit is villainous. So basically he turned both of them into weapons and (based on Kit’s response to his water pack being disabled) if their power source is disabled they get knocked out. It makes me wonder if Dr. Starline had any plans for them after replacing Sonic and Tails to prevent them from going crazy without their supposed advisories. If not he is just as short sighted as Dr. Eggman. I feel so bad for Surge and Kit which I never thought would happen when I first saw them. They join Shadow, Cosmo, Gamma, and Tikal as some of the most tragic Sonic characters. Although I am very curious about all the mechanical enhancements that Dr. Starline gave them (in an universe that had robotization they look completely normal and natural). I hope that they get a happy ending and maybe even a game appearance. Sonic adventure 3 featuring characters from idw maybe.
I loved reading this! Thank you dude, and love your vids from a longtime fan. (If longtime also means 3 years). Seriously though, your vids got me to read through the IDW series and I’ve loved it all. Thank you, and keep trucking on.
As much as I respect Ian Flynn(which I heavily do),I despise the character of Surge as she isn't intimidating nor "cool".She's just looks like a punk rock reject and was created to replace Scourge, who was a terrible villain. It's no question Surge is objectively superior to Scourge but that's a low bar to begin with
@@kingtiger5040 Well that's sucks to hear but I can see why you say that, I personally would like to see more because it explores an interesting dynamic between Surge and Kit, but I can understand why you don't like Surge
Just like how Wario once had a personal grudge against Mario, but didn't dig it up and took revenge on him for ruining his past ambitions, surge probably doesn't dwell on his own ways and past either. I'm thinking that I might take revenge on Sonic in a way
41:52 Okay soo im just catching up on the IDW comics and all the chaos the new cast of characters but i honestly was not expecting this and had to go baxk to find when Eggman has a GuN? ! Like this shouldnt make me laugh so hard but now i cant unhear thw Surpize MF 😂 also i just found your channel and i love these videos very cool and unique
Been thinking about this for Months and just gotta say; Even though they're Supposed to be Intangible, they never Fall down to the Planet's Core and we know they can't Fly, so right from the Get-Go we already know there's Some 'Rule of Cool' Taking Placing
i feel like metal is considering sonics words now. and maybe kit is seeing each side of the battle. annnnnd maybe sonic's age is starting to show. WHO knows great coverage btw thanks for posting~!
I'd say at this point it's almost a given as long as Evan is in charge of story. Belle is her creative baby so she'll bring Little Miss Tinkerer back as soon as she's useful to the plot again (being an assistant in Tails's workshop won't hurt)
I think your compilation video is amazing. I have mixed feelings about the Surge Saga, but I do like how they make it clear he isn't perfect. With Scrapnik he and others still have a chance for further growth. I think Eggperial City does Shadow justice.
Note that even when the diamond cutters were still invisible and intangible, they were able to walk around Eggman's tower just fine. They can probably "latch" onto a surface as if solid for the purpose of moving along it, but leave no physical effect on it. like no-clipping across a surface. You aren't really touching it, but hovering close enough by to approximate it.
i thick tangle switching from tangible to intangable was supposed to be because of how buggy the process was from eggmans device. he did say he forgot to update it. it may have beenjust phasing her in and out at random times.
I’m not sure if someone else has already said this but I think with regards to tangle’s intangibility, after she was made visible, she became semi-intangible meaning she has some control over when she is tangible or not. Before it was clear that even though they were fully invisible and intangible the diamond cutters could still interact with the floor as a hard rule, but now she can somewhat choose how she uses her intangibility like when she’s swimming through the floor which they weren’t shown to be able to do before, and it works the same way in the other direction where she’s able to make herself more tangible as well which is how she could grab metal, but she clearly doesn’t have full control over this ability which is why metal was able to slip away from her
@@someguyand...whatever23 Ah, I thought there was a second one aside from that one. I didn’t notice that Scrapnik was a part of this compilation. That did go hard.
Part of me wonders if the weird tube creatures at 46:27 are a reference to SnapCube's AI generated Sonic Movie: Sonic Destruction. A part of the "plot" was Gerald Robotnik creating weird snake things in a tube and and at least one of those makes me think of "A f#@%ed of snake that can only survive in mineral water".
Scrapnik island is probably the only time Sonic has made me emotional at ALL. From the moment I saw Mecha Sonic start to experience his little “glitches” I was almost CERTAIN he was going to die. Robot characters in media are well known to self sacrifice, especially when they were made for nefarious purposes, like the Iron Giant, Terminator, and, like you said, Metal Sonic from the OVA, and I saw Mecha Sonic as another example of this, a predictable plot structure, obviously one that can be very compelling and could make me emotional (I’m looking at you Iron Giant) but predictable none the less. This feeling of certainty continued to be reassured as the story went on, peaking with the parallel to the OVA, where he resigns himself to his fate as a failed machine who would leave the world better if he were destroyed. Another Iron Giant, another Terminator, another Metal Sonic… But then, the story subverted my expectations. Sonic told him that he doesn’t need to live for some arbitrary objective given to him, he needs to make his own meaning to life. He isn’t a lost cause because he’s made mistakes, and he doesn’t deserve to be abandoned because he has a horrible past. And, he listens. And not only that, but all of his friends come back to save him, and gather around to give him a hug, sigma even apologizing for not helping sooner. And that makes the stoic, unmovable Mecha Sonic so emotional, that he cries. Well, through Sonic at least. That was the first time anything Sonic related made me cry. That Theme of Mecha’s arc, that you are never truly broken, resonated very VERY deeply with me. In fact, it’s what Scrapnik island is all about. You’re never a lost cause, you’re never irreparable. Everyone is a glowing ball of potential, no matter where you come from, no matter how you’ve messed up, and you CAN get better. I think the aspect that made this arc resonate so effectively with me is that I went in fully expecting Mecha to die, like most of the other robots before him. Most story arcs like this (while I STILL usually resonate with them) you know for sure that the main character isn’t gonna die, and they’ll get all better, their friends will help, and it will all be right in the end, but Mecha wasn’t afforded the luxury of assurance due to his very high death likelihood caused by his robotness. That’s what made it so surprising. I didn’t even realize I was in a feel good story arc until it started feeling good, suddenly filling me with a sense of… feeling good!!! And it happened, I felt so Happy I cried. (Yeah, I know this is really messy, but I might come back later and tidy it up to be more cohesive)
Someone probably already said this but I think the closer tangle is to the fake chaos crystal she becomes more tangible and since most of the city is made out of the crystal I think that's how she able to touch it maybe I don't know it's just a theory
Am I the only one that's any amount of disappointed that a super form wasn't even attempted in the final showdown in the Eggperial city? Shadow using chaos control and Tails even outright saying that they matched the same frequency and stuff of the like to the regular emeralds, combined with the sheer amount of fake emeralds there were at the end, really made it seem like the golden (heh) opportunity for a super form- especially to give a sense of scale- if Sonic had to have gone Super to take out the tower then it probably would have showed just how much of a threat the city was. Hell, even if it was only at the very very end- something like Shadow briefly going Super to Control away the city into out space. I dunno. Just kinda feels like a missed opportunity.
Shadow, the game was amazing. I loved every second of the game play it was more grow up than the normal sonic game because it's shadow he's always way darker than Sonic.
2:07:57 i don’t know if this was ever explained to you by now but according to Ian Flynn despite rings directly being mentioned in Generations. They aren’t actually in universe they’re just a game mechanic. I don’t know if this is the writing team or just Sega tho
I think the other test tubes in starline lab were meant to create more cyborgs, which made to be improved versions of other Sonic Allies. project remaster is the sonic universe equivalent to project cadamus DCAU
2:50:40 _is that... blood?! Coming out of Metal??_ It could totally be oil with unique lighting, but in Omega's mainly yellow blast that doesn't... make sense- why does Metal have blood in him??
I love the idea of Tangle and Whisper being a couple. But I completely understand why Sega doesn’t want to do it. I think this stuff should be kept out of children’s media, and I know that’s kind of a hot button issue. But I’d rather they allude to it than outright state it. The reason why I think it worked in Owl House and Legend of Kora worked is because it was shows made for young teenagers. Yes sonic is for young teenagers, especially the comics. However the games are meant for kids, and if IDW and Sega want to make the relationship cannon. They would not be able to show up in the games. Keep in mind they wanna keep romance out of the games. It’s not an old way of thinking, it’s just that they want to keep it out of the games. Also I just think it would be an awesome thing to see fanart of these two. They are genuinely cute power couple.
Well kitt flailed sonic was good enough that he got out, and is he seriously saying sonics bad as Eggman due to wanting to help people and say bs like he wants to justify his stuff, that is just nonsense he just simply wanted kitt and surge to leave the place and ho anywhere they want he didn’t want for them to come with him just leave
my whole thought process through this whole thing is just, "god Kit what the fuck is your problem" (I know what his problem is but this man has zero chill with that "you already have him" stuff about Tails to Sonic like goddamn dude it's not a simping contest)
The scrapnik island stuff was peak side story, but I felt the main story was just overall weaker than the prior arcs. Maybe it’s too soon to stay but I hope the series doesn’t start to run out of steam or become too derivative. Please stop trying to shove bs pandering romances into comics…especially ones for kids. Everything else was fine but I’m glad sega isn’t allowing a push for that sort of thing that already mucks up so many other comics in this day and age. Keep the focus on the characters.
