Well I never suspected your layouts were in two completely different house’s, that certainly makes filming more challenging. Another great look behind the scenes, I can only hope I can achieve half of what you have.👍🏻

What a remarkable set up. No wonder its difficult to understand sometimes. To see where and how these layouts are placed the video results are even more amazing. To keep modeling standards and colouring the same in two locations is also a credit to your skills. Thanks for sharing these Lewis 👍👍👍👍👍

The most fascinating is how really small this layout is when viewed in its entirety in this sort of behind the scene making of, while seen on your other videos it looks almost huge, thanks to the very clever arrangement of the setting, the general landscaping and a perfectly mastered photo framing and use of perspective. It's really like a film set shot by a very talented cinematographer.

Never knew you had two different locations for the layouts. Yet this 'small' layout is the perfect example of what a beginner's layout project should be. Simple yet enjoyable, easy to upgrade if wanted (for example the pocket track near the canal I would have extended to a quarry made by taking.g over part of the hill with two tracks, one for loading and one for empties, then a third track with a small loco shed for a shunter like a pannier or a dreary shunter. May be my plan for my future N scale exhibition layout once I got my wheelchair and a disabled person adapted home... Misslethwaithe is definitely an excellent inspiration for anyone who wants to start in the hobby. You can be really proud of yourself, you really promote the hobby in the best possible way!

Excellent stuff, I like both your layouts. This is basically a shelf layout. It's given me some ideas as I'm starting a shelf layout. I have about 6500mm x 400mm, with a right angle turn going to an area of 2000mm x 500mm similar to your under the desk mini fiddle yard, where I can store trains. Cheers.

Shows what can be achieved with a quite simple track plan. Now I must confess that your railways have inspired me to build a different layout after my house move. Always used a flat baseboard arrangement but this one will be an attempt to cut a line of railway into the ground that existed before the surveyor came. Yours is the target for which I am aiming and its an exciting time.

Bonjour Lewis, A need to thank you ! I learned so much from you and sure I'm not the only one. I'm in the process of 'renovating' the landscaping on my layout and applying your fundamental techniques to make it look natural and well balanced. Only recently - by watching and rewatching your video's - it just jumped at me that you only use a few colours and products to compose the total 'scene' where-in your trains run. My mistake: to many different colours and textures so it doesn't 'harmonise'. As always: less is more ! But your talent and skills walk in front of you and you can be proud of two magnificent Model Railways. A reference in the hobby! So thank you very much for showing and sharing and I wish you many happy 'model railway' hours. Cheers, Filip
@MouldyRaspberry
@MouldyRaspberry 2 года назад
Thanks Filip, I’m glad you liked it! You’re spot on there, I did the exact same thing trying lots of different colours textures etc and came to the same realisation. I wonder if it’s a scale thing where because we often look at the layout from a distance, it looks more natural with fewer colours… as in if you were viewing a scene in real life from 30-40 metres away, everything begins to blend together the further away you get.
@phil36310
@phil36310 2 года назад
@@MouldyRaspberry Thanks for your reply Lewis! Yes, this must be the 'golden rule' when landscaping a model railway. Like you mention: viewing a scene in relation to distance. You could do a video on the subject and point this out ? I guess many model railroaders would appreciate and learn from this. Success & cheers, Filip

You could fix a light to the rail and power it in some way to move along the rail (would one of those camera dolly rails work?). Re location, anything on the floor these days would seriously stuff me up (I bought a scissor lift for my car DIY) so well impressed you manage it. Osborn Models are lovely ppl to deal with, highly recommended. Your eye to capture the real thing and then building stuff is great eg love the two cottages and signal box as I hv been considering doing something similar after years of building std kits which I find v enjoyable. Do you identify prototypes then order the relevant Wills parts? PS coffee stirrers...thought it was just me that uses them 😋

Thanks Paul, appreciate it. I like the standard kits as well. For the cottages, I don’t really look at prototypes but I just have a standard way of making them - I think that’s why all of mine look very similar 🤣 I just order a couple of packs of stone sheets, a couple of packs of roof sheets, then the windows and door & drainpipes packs and that’s enough to make a couple of cottages.

It says a lot about your filming, I never thought they were two separate layouts never mind that they were in two separate houses. I was judging the size of the layout and I worked it out to be about 10 foot by 2 foot plus storage yard, am I right? Both your layouts are absolutely brilliant, keep up the good work. Thanks, Mel

@MouldyRaspberry 2 года назад
Thanks Mel, appreciate it! You’re close - the scenic section is 16 ft (2 ft wide) and the storage yard is about 6/7ft I think.

As always this looks a lovely layout, and so convincing! However, I’m puzzled! How do you cope in the fiddle yard without a run round?
@MouldyRaspberry
@MouldyRaspberry 2 года назад
Thanks John. Good question! So I run whichever three trains I have made up out, run them round (or do some shunting if it’s a goods train), and then run them back into the storage yard. When they’re all in there I’ll either reverse them out and back in so all three are the right way round and ready to go, or I’ll just change the loco if I fancy running something else.

This is a very nice little layout Mouldy, I enjoyed the videos of the process of building it!! Did British Railways ever use "Armstrong turntables" at the end of branch lines?? One would look awesome at the end of your station platform to turn your Steam around!!!
@MouldyRaspberry
@MouldyRaspberry 2 года назад
Thank you, glad you enjoyed them! I think there are a few that did, especially the longer branch lines. I agree it would look the part!

Hi Lewis another great great video of your layout i think you have done very good job of it and without being too fussy ,again less is more as you said back in the day. thank you Lewis. PS could please tell what size/part number you used for your kadee couplings as I want to change mine over from the Nem pocket and some old Hornby are you on face book.?
@MouldyRaspberry
@MouldyRaspberry 2 года назад
Thanks very much Tony, appreciate it. I’ve used a mix of the different sizes - I’ve found each loco, wagon etc needs a different one, depending on how far back the NEM socket is set. I’d maybe get a pack of each and experiment to see how you get on. I’ve used mainly 18s and 19s though.

Brilliant. What advice would you give to someone who can only go with an end to end layout. Iv got 24 feet in length but only 4ft maximum in width. What width was yours thanks again and PS how do you get the sound working so well. Thank you

Both layouts are brilliant, very detailed and would not look out of place at the major exhibitions such as Warley. And props to your film editing as well, the transitions between layouts are seamless, I like presumably many others thought that Misselthwaite was just an extension of the main layout (I also assumed the whole thing was a very long end-to-end layout rather than an end-to-end and a continuous run)! One thing I'm curious about: how many locomotives do you have in your stable?
@MouldyRaspberry
@MouldyRaspberry 2 года назад
Thanks Dominic, appreciate it. I think a lot of people though that! I think around 25 at this point, although a sell a few on every now and then to make room for something else.

Geoscenics seems to be a good company to purchase one’s scenic parts from. Walmington was already made before I had even heard of them. The station is scratch built, the goods shed is either Hornby or Bachmann and God knows which company made the coal merchant’s staithes!!

Another really good video detailing your smaller layout. I never knew your layouts were in two different houses. Amazing work!! I have a quick question regarding the scratch built houses. What size sheets do you use? I can only find the wills 133mm wide ones. Do they do bigger? Looking forward to the next video 👍🏻

Thanks very much John! I think those are the biggest I’ve been able to find as well. I’ve just glued two of those together where I’ve needed something longer, but it would be good if they made a larger one!
