Of course, catching rain water is another redundancy.... if it ever rains... What else did i miss?

shade from the sun, polarized sun glasses, things you keep aboard your tender and proper clothing for any condition.

If I had boat I would buy a few camping shower bags! They are black and keep them in the sun ! A nice hot shower!

This was the best video by a long shot on preparation for a short or long passage as well as general information for safety! Jamie; What's your thought about using an inflatable tender as a life rife rather than a 'dedicated' life raft if you had an inflatable tender? My thought is that I would use the tender/ dinghy but make a custom rain shield to close it off from the sun and provide rain water.

Always concise with the Information, brilliant ! imagine on your next major upgrade and converting over to full electric motors you'll have electric motors with wind powered sails, that would make for an awesome combination ! . . . IMNSHO . . .
@SailingLifeonJupiter
@SailingLifeonJupiter 3 года назад
Ya it would... Still a bit limiting trying to recharge your batts with that combination at the moment... Would need a reliable genny.

A good book on first aid in your med kit too is worthwhile. I found some on pdf drive .com and I have them on my tablet and pc etc.

How about two fuel filters for each motor so you can switch to a another filter the one gets clogged. Also be aware what medications you can't take into other countries like no pain killers with codeine allowed into Greece. Great point about water maker demineralising the water. André in Sydney

Nice idea with the fuel filters Andre.... Ive since plumbed the suel system, so that pt tank feeds pt eng and stb tank feeds stb eng... With a cross feed so I can use either... This will help stop a double eng fail.

You will never hit every possible option, you would spend years. So good job covering the major solutions. However, .... one could always sail with other yachties, so if the water maker stops or whatever. Your teammates can help or laugh at you.

Aye m8’s, maybe you have to polish that fuel and clean out the contaminated tank before going on another crossing? Catching rain water is not as easy as it sounds. Lots of designs aren’t made for it. While others are, and even have built in systems for catching almost all the water from the coach roof. Excellent for washing, showering etc and in many areas also for drinking. If (most likely) the design isn’t suitable for rain caching one can modify to the needs. Or, put up some sheet which connects to a hose a.s.o. As long as sailing and weather permits a sheet like that… Personally I’d go for finding the “perfect design” and then, if it lacks a water catching system, go for modifying the coach roof and connect it to a separate tank. A sheet system might be all right when at anchor, but not so much when under sail.

True.. We don't rely on rain at all.. It only rained once during our recent Sth Atl crossing... Water makers rock.

Great videos... I was wondering do you have the ability to run either engine off the either fuel tank? Or manually transfer fuel across if the one tank or engine fails ? Also is balancing the boat with equal weight in terms of fuel and water in each hull an issue? I guess with low stored water and fuel on one side and reserves full on the other there might be several hundred kilo of weight difference between the hulls. Is that a consideration. Also I was wondering what your water tanks are actually made of? Do you have a freezer and carry much refrigerated food. I know you are sprouting seeds that is a great way of getting freshness long wAy out of port.. thanks again really loving the videos.

It's crazy that you ask that now... Only days ago I rearranged the fuel system so I can do just that. I'll do a tech tip on it one day... Twice I've had double engine failure due to fuel starvation... Once tank was empty.. 2nd time due to bad fuel... So now I can run port eng off port tank and stbd eng off stbd tank...or feed of either tank... Just a matter of placing some fuel cocks...very happy with it now.

So how much speed do you lose with how much extra weight? Is it just 1 knot for every couple thousand pounds, or more on the other extreme of 50% for every 500 pounds?
@SailingLifeonJupiter
@SailingLifeonJupiter 3 года назад
Good question... To be more correct, id say that your light air performance is seriously affected by the extra weight... On the Sth Atlantic passage we often had light winds of 5kts, but were able to keep moving under sail.. If you were overloaded you would be really slow... If you had 20kts of wind, then even a brick would keep sailing.... But its not just speed that is affected by overloading, it is stability, and how quickly the bows lift to the waves. You really don't want to be on board an overloaded a cat in big seas...

Right, I'm missing also another issue, what about catching rain water? You could use it when cooked first (boil it) and cool down for drinking water. We as seaman (ex now) always where instructed to catch it when in the emergency situation inside the dinghy / emergency life raft and those life rafts are having the lay-outs for it. Food also is an issue as you can take dry food with you that needs water afterwards when using it. Spare sails in case your sails due to that reason is broken / parted etc so at least you can put this emergency sail up. With ref to the fuel, what you should have when like you described having NOT clean fuel inside your tank enough filters with you and also a water separator (like a small filter) that keeps the water out of the engine. www.passagemaker.com/channels/how-to-rebuild-a-fuel-water-separator.

Absolutely Peter... However, on our recent passage across the Sth Atlantic, it rained once only the entire crossing... Ya, my viking liferaft has a rain catcher built in.
