The thing about movie 7 is that it's supposed to be a parody of every OP movie that came before it. By that point, the film franchise had devolved into a series of tropes it built and movie 7 is VERY self aware of those tropes, subverting them for comedic purposes at every opportunity. Hence why Ratchet is such an unthreatening joke. However, that's also why it ends up being underwhelming because you're expecting something to happen, but it's all one big gag. This is when they knew that the OP movies needed a huge change and hence why the arc remakes began. It's also why they amped up the boob jiggle physics to absurd levels never seen before or since. Everything about the movie was designed to be a meta commentary on the film franchise, but it really didn't land.
Wait really? I just thought the boobs twitching in shock was a horny "written by men" moment and not satire (with how the anime amped up the fanservice post-TS)
That wasn't betrayal, Usopp simply left the crew and did it in a pretty legitimate fashion. That's why Zoro had no problems with Usopp himself, he just put his foot down when it came to Usopp re-joining the crew. It was more about respect rather than betrayal.
I think the worst thing about Film Red is that they got AmaLee to be Uta's English voice actress, and they don't let her sing covers of the songs in the movie. I feel that was the plan to begin with, but something must have happened where that wasn't possible but it still feels like a missed opportunity.
One thing about Baron Omatsuri is that he’s voiced by Akio Otsuka, AKA Marshall D Teech himself. Not only does he get to voice one of the main villains of the main story, he also gets to be the main villain of the best film.
Something to note about movie six(spoilers) that doesn’t get mentioned in this video is a key part of the ending. Luffy is the only one who remembers what happened during the movie. When the Straw Hats come back because the flower releases their spirits none of them have any idea what happened. Which is why they are so bound together at the end, the Straw Hats had been made to hate one another by the island, the only one who hadn’t been made to hate/distrust his fellow crew mates to some level was Luffy. So when he sees they’ve come back he doesn’t make a stink about what happened or talk about it at all really. This is honestly really incredible character writing that’s perfectly accurate to how Oda writes Luffy. Also you didn’t mention Luffy’s punch on the Barron at the end. That’s gotta be top three punches in all of One Piece honestly, it’s Luffy’s punch on the Saint Chelos level of satisfying.
I hope you know, i did get to the baron omatsuri part and did in fact pause the video to go watch it and honestly it was well worth it so thanks! The unique art style and quick humor throughout was fun to see with an interesting story! The horror -esk elements were a pleasant shock and it was really just a cool watch altogether ^_^ 👍
I adore that movie. The first third is _just_ comedy. And it's hilarious. But then the _incident_ happens and the tonal switch placed at such a good point got me watching it in one sitting, completely transfixed
Every One Piece movie in a nutshell: Movie 1: East Blue man destroys global economy Movie 2: Punished Sanji arc Movie 3: The adventures of Cha D. Chopper Movie 4: The first really good one Movie 5: The one that's before movie 6 Movie 6: 😐 Movie 7: 90% of the budget went into bozongas Movie 8: "We have Alabasta at home." Movie 9: The adventures of Cha D. Chopper II: Die Harder Movie 10: Strawhats vs The CEO of Racism Movie 11: The best damn marine there ever was Movie 12: Dressrosa x Persona 5 Movie 13: One Piece: Endgame Movie 14: Hatsune Miku's Existential Adventure
The movie villains special weapons that can destroy an island, or be made into special drugs, or a crazy devil fruit, or essentially haki haki no mi, all reflect the biggest threats in the canon manga. I love how the movies can tie into the anime world along with the filler arcs.
Seeing those scenes and the art style again now that I know him, it makes so much sense! Those animations had indeed strong Hosoda vibes all along. Makes me appreciate this movie even more now.
1:01:43 i think it’s clear to distinguish that the strawhats were consumed but not digested. Based on how close chopper was to the barons body however if given a little more time in digestion and chopper could have been lost.
Z, Gold, Stampede and Red are an absolute blast to watch. Strong World is not quite as interesting but I think it was a great jump board for a new generation of films to come. Z was great because of the admirals and the message to follow your dream and Zephyr teached a lot more to his pupils than duty. Gold made me sad in the most unexpected way and to the most unexpected time in the movie and was overall just well paced I think. Stampede was a pure fanfest just fanservice all over. I d love to watch a movie like this again. Maybe different treasure hunt/ different cameos etc. Oda wanted to put Doffy/Enel in that. Almost the best one for me. And Red was just spectacle and heartwarming but thinner story than the others. I hope the next one will top all of the above. But I think the last four were peak and I gladly watch them again from time to time.
Thank you for this throughout detailed, well-structured and dedicated insight. It was a mix of throwbacks and lots of aha moments for me, since I knew and watched some of the movies during the good old days of the early fansub era with just a handful of platforms, but also learned so many new facts and easter eggs. It makes me appreciate the approach on every single movie more, which are indeed a kinda odd placed non-canonical or semi-canonical medium within the One Piece media sphere. While not being familiar with every single movie and cast, I can still appreciate how the creators let them reappear in other movies or even other merchandise and media, since every single one of them, liked or not, still feels like a vivid believable part of the OP universe. I can't believe myself that I watched the Mamoru Hosoda movie already and recognized it here. Even without knowing his cinematography back then, I already felt that this unique atmosphere and art style of the movie has strong Hosoda vibes. I had a good time with this video and learned a lot! It's also a great insight for the multimedia marketing industry of big anime franchises and the approach of canon and non-canon material in general! And personally, after watching the video, I find it hard to view all these films as mere cash grabs despite their individual reputation, because it's evident that a lot of passion and consideration of faithfulness went into the writing and animation for various scenes, and the character interactions are as much fun as in the original anime that can be well worth seeing even today. :)
Film z and baron omatsuri are hands down my favorite movies, omatsuri being made by the digimon team that made our war games gave it the single most unique artstyle in one piece and that unique eldritch horror tinge And z just gets me so hard and zeds song always gives chills, and his last line "Come on boys let master teach you one last lesson"
Luffy operates on Monkey see monkey do mentality, so when you said he "pulls gear 2nd out of nowhere" I am confused... he clearly copied Lucci and Blueno using the six powers and followed suit.
Dude I love the one piece movies and have rewatched all of them multiple times. They are a lot of good ones like film gold and clockwork island! I think due to me watching both one piece and the movies multiple times I known a bit of these voice actor fun facts but I didn’t hear you mention that “Bear King” is voiced by Tessho Genda or Kaido’s voice actor which I find a bit funny lol
Even these Movies aren’t canon, I like to think that these Characters and Settings(more or less) do exist in the One Piece World. They just haven’t interacted with StrawHats as of yet, or the'vey went through some of these events already without the StrawHats being directly involved.
Strong World did not click with me as much as I thought it would. The one thing I did like is that it's one of the only instances where the Straw Hats divert from their course and intent to head back the way they came, I do like the idea that the reason they're heading back is because half of the crew came from East Blue and they want to make sure their friends and families are ok. The big thing that rubbed me the wrong way is that Shiki is so weak. Like I was not buying it for one second that Shiki the Golden Lion, someone of Roger's era, could be taken down by Luffy pre-timeskip. Ffs Luffy would only be a good match for him NOW, but they make him look cool and give him a somewhat cool devil fruit only for him to get captured again. That's the only kind of thing in One Piece that I suspend my belief at.
I noticed how you mentioned during 3D Strawhat Chase how you wished they made more with those models but they actually did! There’s an 11 minute short called “One Piece 3D Gekisou! Trap Coaster” the animation style is the same as Strawhat Chase and it’s still up on RU-vid as of right now.
24:25 I’m pretty sure the “devil fruit users can’t swim” rule was established as soon as Luffy ate the gomu gomu no mi. That was one of the reasons shanks mentioned he could never be a pirate if he can’t swim and the devil fruit solidified that
Some of these movies have been lost to time as well. I know that horror type one isn’t on Netflix and CrunchyRoll too. I have seen most of these movies though
That one isn’t lost at all you can easily find it online to watch…. If it was actually “lost” there wouldn’t be a way to watch it at all most of these movies can be watched easily online
Yeah Luffy had to kill that one candy guy so Perosperos could get his devil fruit. R.i.p that one guy, he should have stayed alive cuz Perosperos deserves nothing
It's interesting to note that many of the series' tracks got released alongside the movies, so they bear names related to events from those movies' plot.
When I became a One Piece fan last year, I imported the UK releases of the first 9 films and converted them to NTSC. And I am so glad I did. Apart from Movie Six, which is legit a masterpiece, they are just dumb fun a lot of the time, like the original Dragon Ball/Z movies. Not canon, not even always good, but fun little one off adventures with characters you love.
I've only seen and own the movies that have been released in the US which is mostly the later ones. My favorite is Film Gold. I actually saw it in theaters and was suprised the theater was 100 percent full. It was really cool to see so many fans. I have Film Red on Blu Ray but haven't gotten to watching it yet. Also Desert Princess and the Pirates is kind of neat since its the first thing Funimation dubbed I think.
After covering all games & movies he is covering all specials & ovas next. Lucky there arent many. Actual list of all of them: ganzack ova, oceans navel, fathers huge dream, last big stage, luffy detective story, jango dance carnival, dream soccer king, pirate baseball king, strawhat theater 1-5, monsters, romance dawn story 2008, 3d trap coaster, episode 0, toriko goku specials, 3d2y, nebulandia, glorious island, heart of gold, episode gold, episode of nami/luffy/merry/sabo/east blue/skypiea
I literally paused at 53:30: I recognized one of the screenshots of this video being one of the movie that one of my favorite anime movies creators, aside from studio Ghibli, Mamoru Hosoda.....and you saying skip this video.... wasn't going to skip it at first but you know what why now, I'll sail to tve grand line and find a way to watch this one!
Great retrospective! I watched most of the early films in the mid-2000s through patchy fan dubs where someone had done an English translation off a Chinese translation, so a lot of the fine character details and motivations you mentioned here were completely lost to me. I wish Funimation would license and dub the older ones for completion though I guess it's a lot of effort for something most of the casual fanbase would only consider a minor curio at this point.
1:29:50 Oh shit, Dyna Stones? I first learned about those from One Piece: World Seeker! I thought those were made up for the game. That's really cool how the concept was reused for World Seeker
If Honey Queen showed up again today, she probably wouldn't have that immunity to being submerged in water, that probably was just Toei not knowing the rule. But i get what you mean about these films being Tim capsules. Like how the fight between the Supernovas vs Bullet was done before we saw the full breath of Kid, Law and Bonney's abilities.
You forgot two important things about movie 9. Wapol has two devil fruit powers at the end which is cool bcs it happened before blackbeard. And in 2014 re-release version we get a post-credit scene which explains that the whole movie was a dream of post-timeskip chopper
I honestly believed that uta being cannon is in the sense of all that happened in her backstory did happen but she never attempted the concert in the first place, not what I want but it makes sense to justify her as cannon. Though hearing you say she COULD appear in cannon in some different ways gives me hope of seeing her again...I hope it happens in cannon and that she gets a happy, still alive, ending this time....but like you said time will tell I guess.......
Ew. Gross. No. Piracy is scummy in real life, and doing so much makes you an uncaring, selfish person contributing to the downfall of the anime industry which you clearly don't respect.
@@the-NightStar If you seriously think that you can determine what someone does or does not respect by reading a single youtube comment. You my friend are what's wrong with the internet. Buckle your seat belt because you are fixing to get kicked off that high horse your riding!! Lesson #1: The global value of the anime industry at the end of 2022 was 26 billion dollars and it has built that value on the backs of overworked and underpaid studio staffers. It even overworked one of the employees so much that he ended of taking his own life. Which seems like way more scummy, selfish, and uncaring thing to do. The anime industry doesnt even respect itself much less any of it audience. Lesson #2 you know nothing about this person life or any hardships they may have or not have been through. How bout next time. Instead of instantly trashing another human being because he disagrees with your morals on a subject. You step off that soap box of yours and use that time in a more constructive manner. Maybe trying to educate people on the harmful effects piracy as a whole instead of immediately judging people while acting like you are better than they are. The point is Dont throw stones at a glass house until u know that u youself dont live in one as well.
@the-NightStar piracy is more than valid especially when there's no legal way to watch most of these movies in some countries and ESPECIALLY if it's crunchyroll
I always liked Film Z for what it implied in the world's government not really caring about the new world, because in the new world yes there are still islands and civilians under the world government's care but like several yonko have their home base within the new world, if it gets wiped out it either kills or displaces half of them, very greatly reducing their power so while yeah there may be some civilian casualties it's not like especially after some of the events that have been taking place within the current Egghead Arc, I don't really think it's all that much of a surprise that the Navy didn't respond in greater force, they had flipping Akainu still sitting at his desk
Well I'm only watching the several hour long video BECAUSE I've seen all the movies so 😝 😂 in all honesty I'm looking forward to hearing what you have to say, the movies were a really fun time for me, with Chopper being one of my favorites his movie felt kinda goofy, cozy, irrelevant to greater world powers and I like the step away some of the movies do
1:46:03 Anyone know the song in the background of this segment? I think it’s from one of the One Piece video games but I don’t know which one or what it’s called.
Amazing. I was literally clapping at some points, and going "...oh!!" Has the strawhat EVER being drawn lying on the ground, upside down, the brim facing up? If not, I really believe Oda was saving this! When I think of what might happen at the end of One Piece i always think of what the author hasn't done yet.. for example because we've already been at the sea bed in Fishman Island and into the sky during Skypiea, I dont think Laugh Tale will be in either type of location.. But then where the hell is it?? The moon, the insdie of the planet?
Im sorry but what exactly is bad about movie 7s main villain besides hes a dumb goofball? so what, everyone in one piece has at least one goofball ass aspect to themselves, thats literally just every character. I get the complaint about the minions having no aura cause that is also something I hate seeing in one piece films or filler, uninteresting and boring crewmates that arent the big bad, but honestly the main villain sounds fucking hilarious, its obviously meant to be more lighthearted in tone.
I will legit kms if Uta doesn't appear at least once in a random reaction panel before the series ends. It's been 2 years since Film Red and they're still releasing merch and DLC of her in various OP products and games wich in unprecedented for any "filler" character. Shit I would dare to say there's maybe more shit with her than the likes of Vivi or Yamato, or even straw hats like Franky or Jimbei. Come on Oda, give us a canon Uta aparition in the manga. Having said that, if she's the one who's messing with the crew right now in Elbaf bc they're all still drunk sleep and allucinating I swear to god I would ascend to nirvana.
Oh man first the game, now the movies... Are we going for the arcs from the actual anime after this? Gotta have to stay tuned to your channel to see what your next step will be gangy
i'd love to see the SBS where oda confirmed zoro would kill another crewmember, because all the ones i can find and all the ones i can remember says the exact opposite XD
I hate that there was always a kid with tantrums in the old One Piece Movies, because this makes me unable to watch them again. Anyway I wonder what would be the awakening of the boss vilain fruit in the "Clock" movie
I actually read all of One Piece the two months prior to Film Red releasing as I was a fan of Ado beforehand and wanted to experience the songs in the movie during it's US release. So with that said, I'm sure it's obvious that I love Film Red the most lmfao. BUT I have to say as it is with all spin off movies and actual canon, having rewatched it recently along with the current ongoing arc in the manga and how the Elders are involved... it really makes me laugh at how they handled the situation with Tot Musica when we uhh SPOILERS, now know they would not give a damn about that 70% of the population and probably head to Elegia themselves to take care of the problem lmfao
One of my favorite memories of 2019 was going to the theaters and seeing Stampede in my hometown. Really one of those movies you just had to see in the theaters. My favorite movie out of all of them is still Film Gold though. Really think Luffy vs Tesoro is the best written non-canon matchup we’ve gotten. They should announce a new movie sometime soon to release next year. I’m surprised you didn’t mention the controversy surrounding Film Red, like Oda rushing the manga in order to introduce the Figarling Family and people feeling like the film was built on false advertisement.
