I think Thranduil travels back to Valinor because at the end of the trilogy it tells that slowly every magical creature including hobbits leaves Middle-Earth as the Age of Men begins. I think Tolkien mentioned that basically, Lord of the Rings is a "history" before us. So when humanity came to be in the real-life that is the start of the Age of Men. Thranduil is interesting in that he is first introduced to us as one of the bad guys -- not evil of course, but an adversary to Thorin & Co. We come to see he is good and wise before the end. I've always liked the fact that when Five Armies began, Bilbo consciously choose to "defend the elvenking". No doubt that was his Tookish side talking.

He might be a stinkin' knifeear but along with Feanor he is the best Elven character in the entire mythos. All other Tolkien Elves' are shamelessly blatant mary sues and while he, Feanor and his sons are the only Elves allowed to have flaws and feel like actual characters instead of hamfisted idealizations.
@waynepurcell6058
@waynepurcell6058 2 года назад
@@nickkorkodylas5005 Well it's kind of easy to be a Mary Sue when you are the first children of god placed directly by his hand and are immortal. They aren't SUPPOSED to be flawed and relatable. Without Melkor's discord being mixed into the Music of the Ainur the elves would have been utterly perfect so idealization can actually be achieved by the best of the best of them. That's not hamfisted that is just one part of the varied bits of religious theme Tolkien put into his work.

No bigger adventure was ever achieved

I'm hoping Thranduil is seen in The RIngs of Power in more of a Legolas role, as he was more of a "normal" elf while he and his father lived in Doriath, Oropher didn't actually become king until after the fall of Doriath. I want to know more about his relationship with Oropher, and what drama must have happened between him and Gil-galad to keep him from wanting to wait for the charging order like the other elves. Since a lot of things took place in Doriath, it would make sense if he and his father could appear.. Apparently they also felt that Galadriel and Celeborn encroaching on their space as well wasn't good, so they kept moving north. The Sindar seemed to be the most "hippie" and nomadic, basically drifting around and living life in the forests and wanting to cut themselves off from politics and the outside world.

I started to read The Hobbit to my 7 year old daughter. Well, she was fond of unicorns and little elves/fairies on flowerpetals and stuff. Now she thinks that elves are something more. I think that Smith of Wootton Major and especially Giles of Ham will be more than suitable for her :) And my little nephew, 5 years of age, when i recited the first passage of Hobbit smoothly continued: "nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat". Me and my brother were both awestruck, since he had heard the beginning of the book some 3 weeks before.

When I was reading the Hobbit in 12th grade English, the description of the Mirkwood elves and the Elvenking reminded me so much of Goethe's Erlkönig poem, which is about a spooky elf king who hunts children in the forests. I don't know if that's where Tolkien got his inspiration for Thranduil, but I can definitely see him and his followers diminishing into spectral beings, forever haunting lonely woodlands. At the same time I want him to go to Valinor too and live happily forever 😭

It seems Thranduil is a much more noble character than depicted in the Hobbit movies? Is this correct? Not perfect, a little to focused on riches from Erebor, but he did not want war at all? I often like to think of what the dwarven company thought of bilbo's escape from capture and his breaking them out of the elvish prison. They didn't know he had the one ring, so they had to think hobbits truly were magical and able to very nearly disappear all on their own.

Something that almost never gets mentioned in these sorts of videos is that being held prisoner by the elves, the Sylvan elves included, was very pleasant. They only locked up the dwarves in the Hobbit because Thorin had all but spit in Thranduil's face and Thranduil remembered the night the dwarves tunneled into the city of Menegroth and slaughtered a bunch of elves in their sleep and sacked the city and stole the Silmaril, which they later lost deep underground, the stunty bastards, but I digress. Golum even got to get taken for walkies, which admittedly is how he escaped. He and his escort were ambushed but orcs and the escort was fine, because of course they were, but Gollum got away, the stunty bastard...

Dunno if this is explained somewhere else but in the movies, Thranduil tells Thorin to not lecture him on dragon fire. (We see Thranduil's face become deformed when he says this.) Is there an explanation for this? Did he fight against Morgoth's dragons in the War of Wrath? Or is this just a movie thing to make the screenplay more exciting? I had always wondered if the reason that Thranduil was so upset with the Dwarves was that he got caught up in their war with the dragons. Or that he was maimed in the War of Wrath.

Two small corrections: Oropher was killed in The Battle of Dagorlad after 5 years of different battles of the War of the Last Alliance. The Battle of Dagorlad was the major battle, not the first one. Thranduil's reign started in the late Second Age (SA 3434) after Oropher's death. But his coronation was at the start of the Third Age. Accession to the throne and Coronation are two different events. Usually coronations are held in the most significant Realm's place thus Thranduil's coronation took place in the Woodland Realm after 7 years. Example from our world: The accession of Queen Elizabeth II took place on 6 February 1952, but her coronation was held only on 2 June 1953 (1,5 years later). Tolkien was familiar with this stuff very well , he witnessed 6 reigns and 4 coronations.

if we were to assume they have happened, it would be in Silmarillion. but Silmarillion is vague a lot, doesn't mention a lot of things specifically.( but does a lot of time too) it is more of an encyclopedia or bible type book. it needs to be interpreted sometimes so if something doesn't contradicts anything that is explicitly mentioned or the larger themes and philosophies of arda in my opinion it could be might as well be canon

It’s crazy how long elves live. I wonder what it’s like to not be able to die. What do they do for entertainment? What do you look forward to everyday? Why do they not have more offspring? Imagine living in the same place for 3000 years.. in the video it was mentioned “he goes on to rule the woodland realm for some time” how long is some time? Lol an Elf’s some time or human’s some time?

Yeah kind of wished that Peter Jackson added a quick flashback sequence like during the Council of Elrond or when the Fellowship entered Lorien to give more context on why the Dwarves and Elves didn't really trust one another because of the Nauglamir and the Dwarves killing of King Thingol being where it started at clearly!

I thought I read somewere Thranduil once battled a dragon of the north and got scarred greatly. I believe it's even shown in the Hobbit movies. Now since you didn't mention this, was this just a sidestory created for the movie? Did he ever battle a dragon (of what we know of according to Tolkien)?

@atafakheri8659
@atafakheri8659 2 года назад
@@ladyalaina42 he didn't have a scar but he was around when the war of wrath was going around. technically speaking he could have faced a couple of dragons. Silmarilion needs to be interpreted a lot of times. him fighting dragons doesn't contradict any explicitly stated lore or greater themes and philosophies of the lore. so altough it is not explicit cannor, it might as well be.

It's just a movie thing. Tolkien doesn't ever mention any combat Thranduil may or may not have had with dragons. Matter of fact Thranduil's name isn't even mentioned in "The Hobbit". There's just a character called the "Elven King". We just KNOW that it's Thranduil because of other writings/notes/ect Tolkien did and the timelines of those writings place Thranduil there in Mirkwood as king during "The Hobbit".

When I think upon these wonderful writings of Tolkien I can't help but see the hand of God guiding Tolkien's pen to recount the terrible consequences of pride, arrogance, and avarice and how the decisions and actions of one person can engender devastation upon so very many. A lesson to us all, but especially those that God's hand has lifted up to high places of leadership and even nations.
