Entwives if i remember correctly migrated over the anduin from the Old Forest to the Brown lands where they grew apples and such and teached their agriculture skills to the men living there. I guess they lived there for a long time and after Sauron burned the Brownlands at 2nd age to stop/halt advance of Last Alliance. I think that Entwives either stayed with their gardens till the end defending them and perishing, or some took for agricultural work by sauron

One interesting point. Sam Gamgee recalls the story of a man seeing a tree man that is an elm. Interestingly, in Norse mythology, the first two humans Ask (man) and Embla (woman) when translated are ash and elm. This could be a hint made by Tolkien that the tree man seen was actually an ent wife.

Tolkien went out of his way to say that the Entwives were "lost." He never says "dead." And when Merry and Pippin describe The Shire, Fangorn is intrigued to say the least. I strongly remember the line "But you're part of this world!" I was a real introvert as a teen and this really made me realize I can't pretend I'm not part of things. Also later when Mery tries to convince Pippin to just leave it he reminds him that even the Shire is part of the world and sooner or later the shire will burn if Sauron wins. You can't just retreat and shut off the world.

This makes sense, and it lines up a great deal with how Tolkien lamented the state of the world when he was writing and even till today. His thoughts on the environment are important. Of course there was a bad, long winter when Gandalf saw the Hobbits in extremis. If there were Ent-Wives hiding near the Shire, it might have been beyond them to help the Hobbits much or Gandalf would have seen them.

Thanks for this; to me, the Ents are one of the most intriguing aspects to LOTR. (Treebeard pulling down part of a wall after the siege of Isengard simply to amuse himself is still a favorite moment) My only regret about the movie depiction was how they acted more dumb than slow to react. Plus the Hobbits description of truly angry Ents being terrifying, was something I’d hoped to see. Ah well, that’s why there’s always the books. 🌳

Years ago one Saturday afternoon in Port-of-Spain a marine tornado swept into the valley where I lived. In minutes this dark column ripped off roofs, palm tree leaves, satellite dishes and spiralled them up while the air shook and howled. A white cat flew by my deck, and I could see our gardener clinging to a poui tree but wit his body perpendicular to the ground. I remember in that moment thinking, 'the fury of the Ents'.
@Duiker36
@Duiker36 3 года назад
I feel that it's very hard to convey unhurried intelligence as opposed to mere stupidity, especially when "quick" is one of our synonyms for "intelligent". To capture it, I think that you'd have to show the ents somehow coming to thorough, exhaustive conclusions through contemplation, and frankly, Tolkien never gave them such opportunity: Saruman's mischief was too obvious to be revealed through some kind of mental adroitness (and that kind of cleverness is anti-thematic to Tolkien's aesthetic anyways).
@cerberus6654
@cerberus6654 3 года назад
@@Duiker36 'Quick' is not a synonym for 'intelligence', Michael. 'Quick witted' yes, or 'quick on the uptake' but not in and of itself. 'Quick' is a synonym for 'fast' - and in the older English sense of the word, also a synonym for 'alive' as in 'the quick and the dead'. But otherwise, you make a great point!
@Panzer_the_Merganser
@Panzer_the_Merganser 3 года назад
@@Duiker36 I agree it would have been difficult to convey the full depth and breadth of Treebeard's knowledge and intelligence, however I truly didn't appreciate that the Entmoot in the film ended with, "Welp, we gonna do nothing" only to reverse that after Treebeard is duped (and quite easily, I might add) into taking Pippen and Merry to Isengard and seeing the devastation of Saruman firsthand. Yes it gives the Hobbits agency and makes them the heroes of the scene, but their coming to Fangorn was to be a small pebble that began a landslide (or words to that effect), versus slow-witted tree-people gawk and hoot for whatever interminable length of the movie Entmoot (yes I'm ranting a little).

I always thought the surviving Entwives fled to the Old Forest. Treebeard says he thinks they would have liked the Hobbit's country. Maybe what happened was so disturbing to them that they just fled till they had mountains between them and it. I'm not sure of the time line but if Arnor had already fallen they could have moved in quietly and no one would have known. It's always bugged me a little that Merry or Pippin never mention the Old Forest to Treebeard so I don't think he ever thinks to go look there.

You mention how Sam tells of a cousin seeing something that could be an Ent on the North Downs. What about the story told as the hobbits enter the Old Wood of how the trees there seem to move and change the trails. Also about how the trees attacked the fence? That sounds like Huorns or ents, especially when you consider Old Man Willow

I wonder why the Ents didn't fight in the War of the Elves and Sauron or against the Numenor colonists for excessively cutting down their trees. while I can accept they probably didn't have the numbers to fight a frontal battle they could have easily fought a guerilla campaign attacking patrols, raiding parties and isolated settlements, after all they still had the Entwives so they didn't have to worry about casualties as much.

The Ents likely discussed it but hadn't reached a conclusion, without the benefit of halflings manipulating them into being first hand witnesses

@@RobBCactive That's only in the movies in the books many Ents such as Treebeard already wanted to got to war and the Ents decided without the Hobbits getting too involved in the discussion

Tolkien's novels are sad and beautiful all at the same time, you don't get writers like him anymore. You can tell he put his heart and soul into his works, he made something that'll last forever. Great video btw Nerd, your videos bring Tolkien's lore to life in ways that few can manage. I'm not one to get emotional when it comes to fantasy but you've almost gotten me to shed a few tears with how much passion you put into your videos about Tolkien's world and it shows.

What I noticed while recently playing Lord of the Rings Online, in the far north of the region of Evendinim, there is a lone Ent with 3 or 4 Elves that you do quests for. Its a small detail, but its what I like about the LOTRO game

It would make a lot of sense if the entwives would eventually be discovered by hobbits just a bit north of the shire. After all they love gardens and flowers and small plants and well tended landscapes. And so do the Hobbits. Maybe they found the Hobbits who at that time lived at the anduin in the north and decided to stay close to them. When the hobbits wandered into Eriador they followed. And the only reason the hobbits didn't discover them yet is... well you know... Hobbits and their dislike for adventures. Makes one late for dinner...
@mattnorris7124
@mattnorris7124 3 года назад
I was going to say there is some sort of "mother's nest is best" type of mentality with a large portion of the Hobbits and their distaste for adventure. On top of that when you factor in that the Entwives had wandered and as far as we know, never saw the Ents again, that could be some handed down ancient cross-race advice that if you don't wander, you can't get lost. I quite like this theory, particularly with the fact The Shire is entirely landlocked and prime gardening real estate.

As Hobbits think Hobbits that live elsewhere are weird, I think those living on the fringes of the Shire, or outside of it, would keep encounters with Ents, Ent-Wives and Huorns to themselves.

As I am sure Tolkien intended, I feel great pity for Treebeard. Pity not just for the loss of their entwives, nor just for their inability to further propagate. But pity for the way the world changed, discounting everything the ents were created to protect and pity for the fading usefulness over creatures so old and so wise. I am not that old, but old enough to see how this is the story of all of us who do grow old - or at least the story we fear will become ours.

I agree. It’s sad, but it makes sense when you think Tolkien meant the story of Middle-Earth to be his own mythology for the real Earth. All the magic had to get sucked out of it eventually and get replaced with Walmart’s like we have now.
