I like the idea that they had with the shopping malls where you can put on the virtual reality mask and go into any store you want and it looks like you're there and you shop. That would be so amazing because sometimes you just don't want to go to Walmart Target or whatever and if you could put on a headset and just shop from the comfort of your home but still get the experience with the look that would be cool. yes I know we can order online with our phones but I'm talking about putting on the VR headset and actually looking like you're inside of the store.
@adriannaturek4587
@adriannaturek4587 2 года назад
@@TombstoneChris I guess it would look cool, but online stores are more comfortable to use than physical ones. It is easier to find a product, you just type or go by category. In physical one you first have to find in which alley the category is in. Also online products are separated by white space so it is easier to see what is available in the store. Even if it is the last one in stock you don't have problem with noticing it, you don't even have to look for it, it is always at place.

VR helmets are very popular now with hand tracking controllers and cameras that track your hands just like the old data gloves, only without any gloves. Eventually we will have a brain stimulating haptic device to attach to a VR headset to replace the usual haptic suit stuff. If you stimulate parts of the brain with a electric coil it can provide a haptic experience beyond what a suit can.

It was way, way too early with Virtual Reality headsets in 1992. A 486 PC@66 Mhz with no 3d graphics card is simply stunningly underpowered compared to a multicore CPU with a GPU that is anything from 1070ti and up today. And still, even todays Virtual Reality headsets is at the Ford Model-T stage that they compared the 1992 solutions to in this video. Even with the best hardware.

The processing power simply was not there. They could not handle perfectly synced head tracking, visual frame rate of 75+ fps, true stereoscopic imagery, etc. All key components for a sense of "presence". That's like asking why we didn't have automobiles in the 1700s when we had perfectly capable springs and gears, just lacking a thermal engine.
@frankb5728
@frankb5728 6 лет назад
I don't think that's entirely accurate, I think the displays were really the thing holding it back. Yes the scenes were primitive because the systems lacked power but even a few years later when the consumer VR headsets came out some of them were still using low resolution CRTs or absolutely unsuitable LCD screens. The industry just gave up on VR, if you listen to old industry heads like warren spector it was clear that VR was going to revolutionize the industry, at least according to the VR industry, he makes quips about it today since the narrative is very similar from the VR industry.

+brett20000000009 it was hyped because this was the first time something like this was possible at all. Many of the basic elements like the VR helmet/goggles with stereoscopic projections and the interactive glove were invented around this time.The people in the video say themselves that the visuals suck, but for the first time the *potential* of this stuff became obvious. The VR technology we have today is essentially a tremendously large but incremental upgrade of the ideas showcased first in the early 90s. It's like the conceptual difference between flying a Wright brothers' plane and flying a 787 is smaller than the difference between walking and flying, no matter how shitty the plane is.

@@kingcrimson234 I applaud your enthusiasm for big business striving to "serve" the consumer, especially in technology markets, going forward. Not saying it isn't a good product. But it is what it is.

@@TheVanillatech TheVanillatech LOL they're not trying to serve me. They're trying to make money, but in the process they're making a good product that I'm happy to pay for. It's the engine of capitalism. How much should they be allowed to charge? Shall we begin government regulation of prices? It's relatively expensive now for two reasons. The tech is still pretty new, the so-called "early adopter tax". And prices will go down as demand increases and the margins don't need to be as high to turn a good profit. Also, don't forget that they undoubtedly spent millions on R&D that need to be recouped. If you don't want to spend the money on these early headsets, don't buy one. Simple. Nobody is holding a gun to your head. Wait a few years and get a better one for the same amount of, or less money. I wanted one, and I felt the value was worth it. So I bought one.
@TheVanillatech
@TheVanillatech 4 года назад
@@kingcrimson234 But the definition of capitalism is the exchange of goods and services for money. You have a desire or a need, someone addresses that need by supplying a solution (serving, if you will) and you pay them in return. My point was that the men in this video talking about the most basic origins of VR are most likely now multi-millionaires who are supplying Occulus Rift or similar technology to the global market. Even if they are not involved in the business side, they were the pioneers at the start of the tech bubble and are most likely very wealthy, presuming they remained involved in the industry as it grew exponentially.

14:00 "Until we are tired doing it" - tired best word to sumarize VR, makes you tired, 20:00 potential usecase was shown in first 2 minutes of show, he at 20:00 is trying to find use for his technology after he invented. And for certain movie industy is using these. Still nothing better, more precise was invented than a mouse. Steve Jobs ~"better not try to find use for technology you have, instead try to find technology to solve your actuall problems" let's see if that was correct - do have great technology but he struggle to find use case, Imogen Heap used this glove to make music, what else.. ? To control giant robot yest that would work, excavators heavy machines are using buttons pushed by fingertips. Because it's more precise. 30 years later even touch screen in laptops is less often used than mouse. Some people use gestures on 2D flat surface of touchpad.

Nice fps. I've watched tons of these videos and this is the first one where we don't have near perfection in 2021. Not really sure what's presented here is ''Virtual Reality''. A lot of the things in this program are just poor games in first person view off a monitor, with keyboard and mouse input only.

I think your under selling it a bit now sure we can't get it right most of the time. However the moments I do get immersed it feels really enjoyable. Sure would be nice even if the amount of time it felt "right" was even close to 50%, but even with current hardware as long as you get distracted enough you can forget your wearing a screen. Most times it happens when I have to focus on actively doing something, like talking to some in a virtual chat. Think about when you are watching a movie, even though we got really at making you forget you watching a bunch of actors you still can accidently break the magic by thinking about it too much. It will take a while till vr is always immersive, but at this point were are also managing more then zero uptime on immersion and I think that is worth something at least it was worth enough for me to get a headset.

I myself don't think it is for the average person until at least we get a vr headset in which you could do text based work with out having to strain your self. Until I can use my computer for everyday tasks with out taking off the headset and getting frustrated I won't expect it to hit the non gaming crowd. On the other hand in the future I can see some people getting a headset instead of a monitor, not everyone of course and not in the short term but from my experience with my current headset I don't think we are that far away either. Or at the very least getting a headset to act as a personal tv/theater. I know one of my friends wants to get the quest 2, so he can watch movies in vr while on a plane.
