The Conference of the Birds or Speech of the Birds is a Persian poem by Sufi poet Farid ud-Din Attar, commonly known as Attar of Nishapur. The title is taken directly from the Qur'an, 27:16, where Sulayman and Dāwūd are said to have been taught the language, or speech, of the birds. In the poem, the birds of the world gather to decide who is to be their sovereign, as they have none. The hoopoe, the wisest of them all, suggests that they should find the legendary Simorgh. The hoopoe leads the birds, each of whom represents a human fault which prevents human kind from attaining enlightenment. A good portion of this is The Quran in Allegory. The tidbit about the Pheonix is shared in some Hermetic texts as well. Nice little poetic story on the Allegory.

Its called adaptation. This translation has been modified to fit an English rhyming scheme. It would not rhyme if translated directly. Both versions have their uses and strengths.

This version is actually a seriously lacking translation. Dick Davis version also rhymes, is easier to read, keeps the meter better and doesn't remove as many irritating niggles from the original text

Any other faults of the translation aside, it at least keeps the format of the original (i.e. rhyming couplets).

Good thing it survived the middle ages and House of wisdom destruction by the mongols. I believe, you and let talk about religion channel have done this on youtube in such atmospheric way. its pleasure to hear all of these audiobooks on your channel from ancient to middle ages to modern all of your choices are great and rare. Is there chance to hear stuff from Mesopotamia like Poems of enheduanna, world first female author? I believe you would be the first ever to record them in audiobooks? do you have list on audible?
