I think it's because in this, he can just focus on the singing. As you know, they recorded the vocals live, so he had choreography to deal with also (if very little). Personally, I liked the style of Javert that Crowe brought to the table - sure it's not that standard image that many picture, but I think it's a disservice to call it bad. I think it's clearest in the One Day More, where I think Crowe's style suits it better. IMO obviously.
One of my favorite parts of the movie! Dueling while singing makes the scene so intense! I play this song on repeat when listening to the soundtrack. :)
I'm glad Russell's finally able to use his singing skills in a movie. He's a wonderful natural talent in acting and singing. (and song writing as well) Can't wait to see the movie!
Love Russell Crowe in this video!!! I've always been a big fan of Hugh Jackman but that Les Mis movie and this video skyrocked Russell Crowe into my list of favorite actors
Russell Crowe was not EVEN CLOSE TO BAD. HE was such a perfect Javert. He portrayed his own Javert and it was amazing. His voice sets him apart from all the other actors. He has a rough, deep and an extremely unique touch in his vocals. I find it angelic and brilliant.
I love this musical. I've seen it on 3 continents. I could never have imagined a film version like this. The intimacy is almost unbearable. This isn't just a great film version it's a masterpiece of musical film. Like the stage show there's not much to compare it to. It's a stand alone movie. You don't need to compare it with the stage versions, concert versions or the other film and television versions. Judge it on it's own merits. It's brilliant.
I cannot wait to watch the movie. Been a Les Mis fan for years and Seeing Hugh and Russel in this is gonna be Epic! I knew Hugh could sing because I saw him in a performance of Oklahoma long ago, but I didn't know Russ could sing like that! Awesome!
Matching the power of Alife Boe and Norm Lewis is hard to do, and though they sound different, Jackman and Crowe rock this out! I was wary of Russell Crowe based on the "Look Down" clip we saw and the bit of "One Day More," but this puts me more at ease. In terms of Hugh Jackman, he was born to play Valjean. I cannot wait to see this movie. Thanks for posting this!!
Yes, exactly. See,nowadays for a lot of people its harder to understand the beauty in his voice because its simply different from all the typical ones. Javert was a emotionless, dull, type of character who dedicated his life to the law, and that is what Russell Crowe made the audience believe in the film.Physically and Vocally. I knew he was an Extraordinary actor form Gladiator and A Beautiful Mind but after this movie I am completely convinced. Thanks for your thoughts and your comment!
Crowe is perfect! If you have seen the stage part, you will know that he is intentionally thoughtful and non bullish. He is the only active singer in the movie, he sings in a rock band. His pitch is always perfect and you can see he is holding back....!
I Totally agree crazygirl..it's not that he's bad. He just doesn't have the vocal range the others have, so he stands out. I've seen the movie twice now, and he brings out points to his character that u don't see in the theatre production. You have to respect the man. He took a leep way out of his comfort zone and does a pretty good job of it.
Holy eff, this is amazing. Just the brief clip in the 60 Min Overtime was enough to get me excited (of this song) but THIS is GOLD!! GOD, Hugh Jackman can sing - the power behind his high notes could rival some of today's operatic tenors. :-O thank you so much for posting!!!
Well, I am very glad you share the same thought and passion about this actor. :) I knew he was a phenomenal actor after watching Gladiator,Proof of life, Next three days, CInderella man (amazing movies!) But his ultimate BEST movie is A Beautiful Mind. Its truly extraordinary. After watching this film, I was convinced this actor is a pure MASTER PIECE. :) Thanks for your comment.!
Damn people ready comparing!! I'm glad I went into this movie with an open mind and Russell crowe was amazing as javert! I loved this movie and I love this RU-vid video too!! Good job Russell and Hugh!!!!!
I don't know about you guys, but the confrontation between Javert and Jean Valjean after the death of Fantine in the movie is really thrilling, it maybe not shown in here, but somehow their voices are in harmony and create a really chilling suspense.
I agree! He does a really good job. Better than I was expecting from what people had been saying. He just doesnt' sound exactly like a broadway Javert cuz his voice just isn't like that. But it doesn't mean he's bad. He just does the songs in his own way.
