I feel like Charon is one of the half dozen mythological figures of the Greek afterlife who have gotten recast as villains, despite genuinely just trying to do their jobs. He’s not evil. He’s a grouchy taxi driver.
@@hereticFox716 Correct. Hades is the least "dick-ish" of all Greek gods. The reason he's sharted on in modern era is because he technically kindapped his bride, feminists and liberals tend to forget that the kidnapped bride ended up loving Hades and getting her own kingdom.
You, Dead Meat and Foundflix have really made me see horror movies as a craft rather than movie trash. I’ve started to actually seek out and watch these movies because of you guys with a new appreciation. Except the gore ones because my stomach is weak af
I've never quite understood why characters like Charon and Hades are always depicted as villainous, just because they are associated with the dead. Hades was never, not once, actually seen as a villain by the Greeks. Something to be feared and respected, true, but, well, GOD! Hes not the type to get involved in the affairs of Mortals and just did his job of ruling over the dead. Hell, he even helped a few Heroes when they found themselves in the underworld and he was easily one of the chillest gods in the mythos. Hell, I dont think he even cheated on his wife, unlike most of his siblings, and he called his dog Spot. How can you possibly hate a man like that, just because he has a slightly scary job title? Likewise with Charon, hes just the ferryman. At worst, hes a minor obstacle, but he makes his fee clear and always ponies up when payed. Sure hes cold, not very talkative and kinda dirty, but thats no reason to treat him like a bad guy! Its the same with other gods associated of the Underworld and death and it never fails to irritate me. Its like writers see the word 'Death' or 'Underworld' in a deities resume and immediately go EVIL!, despite the fact there is no evidence that they were more than a burocrate for the dead. It gets even worse when they get lumped in with Satan.
Yeah, it's strange because there are neutral ghosts in the franchise. I'd think Charon would have been a good candidate. Maybe because he's being controlled my Malthus.
@@CZsWorld Maybe, or it could be a completely unrelated spirit just using the form. It would be interesting if they did do a film focused on Charon and the Warrens dont actually manage to get rid of it in the end, he just sort of...goes away now that his job is done. A neutral force that acts to balance things out and just heads home once he has what is his anyway. Worlds like the Conjuring are a lot more interesting when there are forces that are fundamentally neutral, just doing their job with no regard for anyone or anything else, which is what Death SHOULD be, even if Charon...probably shouldnt be out collecting Souls. Thats more Thanatos' job, but it is a fantesy, so you can do what you want.
Two reasons Christianity becoming dominate and hell being a negative so any religion that has a hell even if not a bad place becomes bad under the new religion and second people fear death and so no matter what death no matter how good becomes a negative.
i like the theory that she’s the sister of the Ferryman’s victim, explains his fascination with her specifically and why she looks so much like the victim.
In Greek mythology, Charon requires two payments. One coin for the fare and another at the end as a courtesy. Failure is damnation. If you give Charon all of your money before he gets you across the Styx, he’ll throw you into the river or simply refuse to take you across. If you refuse to pay him until he gets you across, the same end result occurs.
needed this upload today, kind of wore your other horror history episodes (especially on the demons and entities in the Conjurverse). you’re the best, thank you for being you.
Every since I seen Annabelle comes home, I’ve been like super interested in the ferryman’s story. There’s so many different variations of the story and I wish they could’ve given that character it’s own movie and show like how Ed and Loraine came across it.
Where you put the coin actually depends on when and were a person died. In most places, two coins were placed in the mouth. This was done for identifying whether someone was really dead, Χάρος would collect his payment from the deceased's mouth and if a living person tried to give him his payment dy hand he would take the coin but refuse to take them to the underworld until they had actually died. *at least that's the most popular version of the myth in the area of Greece were I'm from. I have heard other versions as well.
These videos are my lifeblood, The Conjuring franchise is me and my girl's favourite series so when I'm missing her watching these vids bring me so much damn comfort.
The Ferryman was one of the most intriguing aspects of Annabelle Comes Home for me. I'm so glad you mad this video! I really hope this character is explored more in the Conjuring verse.
Fun fact: In modern greece people often refer to charon as the grim reaper, basicly implying that they are the same person so his appeareance in the movie isnt so innaccurate in terms of modern-ish Greek folklore
I vaguely remember a short story where the heroes died or astral projected or something and ended up in a desert next to a highway. Charon showed up driving a limo and when asked about it he said something like "spirit is malleable, metaphors change". I always liked that.
I don’t think he’s hanging off the ceiling. I think he’s supposed to be standing in the darkness but as she shines the light on where he’s supposed to be his body just won’t appear. Considering how if he was hanging from the ceiling his body was still invisible when a light came on it, I think it’s up for debate what he was doing
@@ink3539 It's a Greek name, why would you think the Americanized pronunciation was correct? I always assume foreign names have different pronunciations.
I feel like he keeps the souls who can't go across as like, hired help. Everytime he's too busy to take a soul across, or something of that nature, the 'hired help' do it for him.
Fun fact: In the movie Ghost Ship, the final bad guy is actually Charon and his sole reason is to ferry the souls of greedy people who come to take the treasure, that doesnt exist, from the ship which leads to most if not all people who attempt to die.
I wound up becoming interested in Charon (Kharon) when I first heard the name in Mortal Kombat 11 where he's a ferryman in the nether realm who ferries people across an infinitely deep ocean of blood. From then on i began looking up everything about the guy .
I love your videos, it's clear that you put so much time onto them and you do lots of research too! Thank you so much for giving us quality content to watch and learn💖
I actually really enjoyed the concept of Greek mythology also playing a role in The Conjuring Universe. After all, it is known that with the spread of religions such as Christianity, that other mythological beings or deity's were retroactively given the status of demons instead of Gods. I think that the ferryman is actually a fantastic idea for a being that was never human and therefore could be considered a demon much like Malthus or Valic. This would also mean that the requirements for being labeled as a demon in The Conjuring universe are less about the Christian overtones and more about the simple question of if they have ever been human to begin with. Not only that, but it opens up a whole new array of dark and terrifying creatures that would make fantastically horrifying demons or Monsters to explore. Creatures that may once have been worshipped as Gods, but have since been cast out of the Limelight so to speak, which in itself is a very strong motivation for their maliciousness towards people. Very interesting idea. Really wish they would explore it further instead of just touching upon it and leaving it
If that is indeed the real ferryman and not a spirit or Martha's pretending I'd love to see nyx ot even hades send an agent for his return as nyx has been seen to protect her children in some myths and if he's missing that means souls cannot move on into their afterlife
Okok a little gush comment about audible. My dad is legally blind, throughout the years his vision has slowly became worse and worse. He was an AVID reader, and we would always share our favorite stories together. One day his vision became too bad even with his bifocals and he was no longer able to read. We went years without anything to share before we found audible. My dad is almost 60 and ALOT of audio book apps were too confusing for him, but we love audible. 130 titles in our library and even more conversations to share :)
I don't think that Charon was hanging from the ceiling at all. He's just tall enough that even with the slight tilt of the head and slouch, his eyeline is still fairly high. We see no body, standing or clinging to the ceiling, so my assumption was that he was standing there and that the coins- probably actual currency paid to him long ago, - were simply left behind when he left that space as the flashlight passed over it.
Just gotta say all your content is superb..interesting and educational lol..I really appreciate the hard work you put into these videos and dig your style sir..
Charon doesn't translate to fierce brightness. Charon comes from the word "Charopos" related to the word "Chara" which means happiness and it's basically a euphemism to hide its grim nature. Also in Egyptian Charon is used to when referring to the boat man for the dead! Just wanted to clarify cause I'm sure positive criticism is welcome! Cheers
Man the lamest artifact in this movie was the samurai armor. They could've made it so much scarier. Like touch the armor and it will curse you to a gruesome death. Or a katana that once drawn, it will torment you to kill until it's satisfied.
I thought the girl taken by the ferryman looking so much like M, was supposed to indicate she was the younger sister? M definitely seemed like she knew more when I last watched ACH
Trapping the entity who's responsible for directing the dead to the afterlife maybe isn't such a good idea..... May cause more hauntings and unruly spirits since they can't pass on 😑😅
During the climax of Annabelle Comes Home, the main character goes into that back closet place and finds the woman who looks exactly like her with coins in her eyes, but she's holding Annabelle. I have a funny story about that scene. My goddamn power went out. That's the story. It's as simple as that.
If it was true that she was supposed to die, but the Ferryman couldn't collect her soul so she didn't die, then PLEASE explain all the dead people since his capture
So Disney and the Conjurverse share a character now - maybe they should build the FerryMan’s Ride at DisneyWorld 😂 Also - I just listened to the Demonologist on Audible - FANTASTIC book!!!
The Ferryman deserved it’s own movie, it was the only real good thing in Annabelle 3 with an actually nice horror scene and I feel it could hold a solo movie. It could be better than what came with the Nun 2, La Llorona and Annabelle 3 itself.
Could this mean that Hell and Hades ( the Greek underworld) are 2 different places? it’s also funny to realize that The Warrens have captured a Greek mythological being in their room of cursed objects
