In today's video I'm talking about the connection between trauma and chronic illness. This is a connection I personally did not want to acknowledge for a long time because I felt like admitting I had trauma and mental health affected by that trauma would invalidate my physical chronic illness symptoms. But that's not the case at all! And in this video, I'll explain why.

ABOUT ME + SLEEPY SANTOSHA
Hi! My name is Rachel. I am the creator of Sleepy Santosha. I am a certified yoga instructor who specializes in yoga for chronic illness. Although I hold two teaching certifications, the classes I teach are largely inspired by my own firsthand experiences with chronic illness and my personal yoga practice.
Because I know what it is like to live with chronic illness, I am able to create yoga classes that intuitively support the needs of someone who is experiencing chronic pain, fatigue, brain fog, etc. and many of my classes can be practiced in bed. If the practice in this video didn't suit your needs, be sure to check out the other yoga classes on my channel. I try to provide a variety of intensity levels.

I had a lot of trauma as a child and over the years then I got cancer (had 8 years so far) and then recently had more trauma with an abusive roommate for almost two years. Poor body could not heal fully due to the meds, chemo, radiation and narcissist alcoholic I lived with. I use yoga in bed, ASMR reiki/reiki and breathwork daily among other things and Osteo and lots of acupunture and kineslogy. I work daily on mental, physical and spiritual health. It's alot of work. The body does all it can. As I've never been totally heathly in any way I have had to learn/train and adapt. My mum also has a chronic illness. She's a warrior too. Fighting is tiring and acceptance is important. A Hematogist (not my usual more open dr) actually laughed at me on the phone when I said that the slight spike in my numbers this month is probably due to recent stress. He said they have found that's not the case. Well I don't believe him, I know it's tiring explaining to them this life isn't easy. I had to negotiate big time to not have a massive increase in my Dex. It really weakens the bones. Be strong fellow warriors xx

It’s heartbreaking how much harm doctors and the public do when they perpetuate the divide between mental and physical health! The body keeps the score was so helpful in unpacking that for me, will check out the Levine book next. It really clicked for me when my doctor mentioned they do not prescribe medications for anxiety/depression to a patient if they have already been tried by the patient, because if the patient thinks they won’t work then they won’t work! If doctors admit the role our brains play in relation to their *infallible* drugs, they should be able to admit the role our brains play in our health in general. This seems like the opposite of “placebo effect” in a way, and it’s such a shame placebo effect (taken so seriously in medical studies to not corrupt data) is treated as a weird fluke and not an important piece in the puzzle of understanding our brains! Sorry for the tangent but I feel that all this is connected and it’s frustrating to not see that coming up in the medical community.

Thank you for this. It took me years to come to understand the trauma/illness connection. You just gave folks a shortcut to understanding which will undoubtedly help many others who are suffering. 🙏

Everyone understands that diet can make you loose weight. And just thinking about something good to eat will make most of us salivate. So we all understand that behavior and thought have an impact on our body. Yet we are raised to believe an illness is either physical or mental.

thank you so much for this, I really needed this, and your yoga for PTSD series is AMAZING! the yoga for dissociation video helped me to return to my body for literally the first time in a decade and this has been life changing. you're right that it is repeated trauma to experience chronic illness/chronic pain after initial trauma, and it's so wild the way that doctors invalidate us as patients by pointing to emotional causation as if it's not just as real as anything else. The body keeps the score is a game changer and I hope more doctors begin to utilize those teachings in practice!

Wondering I’d you’ve heard of Dr. Sarno, his work and books? With years of head to toe pain from Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, after praying God led me to his 20/20 interview on RU-vid and testimonials of the many he has helped. In my case, the relief of a lot of pain was almost instantaneous. In short, he was discouraged by lack of healing/recovery of his patients which led him to discover TMS. “TMS is the result of (your brain creating)mild oxygen deprivation that is signaled by the autonomic nervous system, resulting in muscle tension and pain somewhere in your body. It is a consequence of a repressed emotion and/or in the presence of psychosocial distress”.

It's so true that everything we experience is from the brain. Physical pain is not reality, we think it is buts it's not. The pain is controlled by the brain. I had Transverse Myelitis, lesions in my spinal cord. They put pins in me and because my nervous system was disrupted the brain didn't pick up the pins going in me. Once the flow of the nervous system started, so did the pain. I would like to explore about this.

going to gently say as someone who grew up chronically ill (abdominal migraine syndrome + chronic pneumonia) and now is a chronically ill adult (endo) i dont have any recollection of identity before being sick. this video felt geared more toward folks who at some point lived without chronic illness; that was never me (and i'm sure many others whove fought disease our whole lives)

In this video I also talk about how chronic illness in and of itself is a trauma. Not to mention the medical trauma that usually comes with it. It’s a lot to go through and process. You may not remember life without chronic illness, but I imagine you have still grieved the life you could have had if you weren’t chronically ill. Sending you a big hug ❤️

My oncologist just told me today that my brain fog is probably anxiety. And after i was crying to myself saying i k ow my brain and how anxiety feels... But now youre making me think she could be right
@SantoshaSpirit

Brain fog can be caused by a lot of things! You know yourself better than anyone else, so if you feel like there’s something else going on, i think that’s worth exploring. Either way, it’s worth being taken seriously by your doctor ❤️
