The Console Wars -- XMas 1990

News program "Good Morning America" dated December 20, 1990 did a segment on Nintendo and its competitors during the 1990 holiday season. It was a question wether or not Nintendo could uphold their position as top game maker despite their older NES hardware compared to their rival's 16-bit systems. Nintendo wasn't gonna have their 16-bit system released in the States until the following year. More powerful systems also meant a higher price tag which was a major concern due to the U.S. economy at the time.

it is, nintendo isn't shit compared to playstation or even the lackluster xbox, it's a joke, it had it's day in the sun from 87-90, and once more for a brief period of time when the 64 came out, but then sony hammered in the final nails of that even, so it is funny, because it's a brand that struggles to maintain when it clearly doesn't have the firepower to compete, the people who buy nintendo today are geeks or generational adults that are living off the original nintendo nostalgia of the 80's

***** geez, did you not play games in 1990? NEC (TurboGrafx 16) was around, Atari (7800) was around, Sega (Genesis) was around, and Nintendo (NES) was around. If you have Nintendo with roughly 90%, that means Sega couldn't have had 10%, because that would leave NEC and Atari at 0%, which they weren't because they both sold games in 1990.

@zrobeast
@zrobeast 9 лет назад
Given that this aired a week before Christmas, I'm sure they figured that a lot of parents were buying games for their kids as gifts. There are probably also some adults gifting games to other adults as well as adults buying games for themselves, but I have a feeling a majority of games that were bought around that time were going to kids as gifts.
@Vieweracc99
@Vieweracc99 9 лет назад
That and people were probably remembering the crash of '82 - were parents really going to splash out c. $40 per game based on how well Atari had done with "ET"? I must admit, even UK parents were very reluctant to buy multiple games for one system (based on my own straw-poll research). In 1991, games cost around £30 and it was really cost-prohibitive to have a videogame habit that couldn't be fed by swapping carts with your friends.
@pika62221
@pika62221 9 лет назад
Vieweracc99 Were you even alive in 1982? What crash of '82? They didn't even have any discounts or lack of games in 1982, 1983 was a consumer's dream with tons of games, and hardware in stores, but in 1984 the market was dead, I couldn't find any new games in stores, most had them in discount bins, so after school I used to rummage through them only to find Othello and other crap games no one wanted. It "crashed" in 1984 despite what you may read on "Wrongipedia", I know I EXPERIENCED IT!

+snakes3425 No, it was pretty simple. Sega released the Genesis in the US about two years before the SNES and it was apparent right from the start how much more advanced the Genesis was over the NES. I still think the Genesis beats the SNES for overall total great games, but SNES had their gems too. Super Mario Kart is the best 16 bit racing game, even better than MarioKart64. Mortal Kombat was better on Genesis, but MK2 was far superior on SNES. Phantasy Star II is superior to A Link to the Past(I know I'll get some flak for that one).

It's mind blowing to me to think that there are kids growing up today only knowing what the current generations of systems can do as video games and not experiencing the magic of the 16-bit era. Makes me feel old at 21...
@adewilson132
@adewilson132 10 месяцев назад
How is that mind blowing? Do you not realize that not everyone is born during the same time period? Think about how many generations were born before you, now think about how many will be born after you. You just so happened to be born during a time period of retro games. That doesn’t make you special.

I remember as a young teen going to the mall to kill a day's worth of potential boredom (the bowling alley and pool hall were not busy until night time). You had the top five singles to listen to before you buy at Camelot records, you had the food court, the arcade, and Christmas time always meant the Nintendo display set up at both Sears and Venture with Nintendos and the hottest games available. Of course the security guards ensured a strict time limit on play per kid. I bought an emulation station a year or two ago at Christmas for my family (for those few who may not know, it is a small computer about the size of a deck of cards that has tens of thousands of video games from gaming systems spanning the Gen x era (Commodore, Apple, Atari, Sega, Turbo Grafix, as well as popular arcade games from that tme era). My oldest was bored to tears, my other kids were mildly entertained. I was a six pack of Jolt cola, a greasy pizza, and a cassette tape of Appetite For Destruction from Christmas Break 1986. Watching this video was instant time warp. So simplistic compared to today. The things today's kids will never get to experience

I wish I was a Child for the 80s/90s. Being able to experience gaming back when you had to go to arcades to play your games would be so cool. Playing through the classics back when they were still new. Arcades also seem like such a fun environment/social space. Being able to experience the rise of consoles and home gaming would also be great, especially in an economy in which the video game market wasn't littered with copycats and killfests.

***** They only demolished the Master System by using illegal business practices which was bullying stores into not selling Master System, locking 3rd parties to contracts saying they can only make games for the NES. Yeah, real fair competition buddy. As for demolishing the competition, Sony would be the true victor. PS1 sold over 100 million consoles PS2 sold over 155 million consoles Sony did what Nintendo couldn't with their previous systems, the only reason why the Wii did so well was because of the gimmick because once that gimmick dried up so did Nintendo again.

***** Sega wasn't hot in 1990, they didn't even get decent market share until Sonic debuted in 1991. In 1990, Nintendo cleaned house with Super Mario Brothers 3, Game Boy line and Nintendo Power all flying off shelves. The following year was a different story, Nintendo went from over 90% of the market in 1990 to about 50% of the market with Sega taking most of it.
