The Change That Almost Ruined This Boss in Elden Ring Explained is about a boss so commanding of the stars you'd have to be insane not to glorify him! This is the story of General Radahn, Elden Rings largest and strongest demigod! A man so powerful he learned gravity magic in Sellia just to hold back the stars from moving. In Elden Ring, Radahn is an early fight if you'd want him to be in Redmane castle and Malenia the goddess of the Scarlet Rot had a draw with him making him lose his sanity and control over Caelid. The community of elden ring hated the fast attacks and unfair combos, but the long time Souls fans were all for the challenge! Radahn would have some controversial moves made that still stand to this day! I love Elden Ring so enjoy!

I killed pre-nerf Radahn too, that fight had several things that ticked me off right proper. The fight was in a huge area, against a boss on a horse, but using torrent was a quick way to the grave through many things ranging from his nigh undodgeable arrows to the fact that his AI reacts to you getting knocked off torrent by attacking you, basically always turning a 2 shot into a 1 shot (I killed him on Torrent, so I got to watch my guy try to get on his feet and Radahn always switching target to him quite a few times) The hovering gravity rocks he summons in night phase did so much damage that it killed me in two hits, while I was wearing heavy armor and had some 30-40 vigor. The hitboxes were wonky at best, as many have already pointed out. He was also way harder in relation to the other bosses in the zone, while one can argue that it's lore related reasons, that never stopped fromsoft from balancing every other boss based on the zone they're in. It didn't help that he became accessible, and directly required, to progress a quest that started in Liurnia of all places. I will readily admit that they nerfed him too much, but he really needed a nerf of some kind. I've killed him several times since, and he IS easier than he was at launch, at the very least the bloody meteors in the night phase aren't immediately lethal... infact I'd say they do too little damage now. Outside of that, I'd say that one thing they could do right now to make the fight a bit more balanced is to buff his HP, I think he's too squishy. Still probably the most awesome bossfight fromsoft has made to date.

Whenever I saw people complain I thought: "But this is an open world Souls, with the freedom to step back, explore more, get more stats, equipment, *and then* come back" It *made* sense for Radahnn to a mountain of a challenge, just like Malenia, Or to bring and example of a similar situation in another game: Alatreon and Fatalis from Monster Hunter World Iceborne, who also found divisive reception due to their difficulty.

I don't think radahn is easier by the numbers anymore, he has a ton of health, poise and damage and some of the most complex attacks in the game. The only difference I've noticed is that the gravity arrows can be dodged on horseback, and maybe the speed of his p3 meteors is a little slower? Trouble with Radahn at launch is that he's the boss of a mid-game zone and he gated a ton more mid-game side content. He seemed like a Nameless King-type optional boss at the end of a side-dungeon, but he wasn't at the end; he had to be beaten to unlock a several whole zones all of which are much easier than he was, with the possible exception of Astel who comes several hours after (and Tiche, but F*** Tiche). It's as if you had to fight the nameless king to access Irithyll Dungeon, the Profaned Capital, and Archdragon Peak. Given all that I think nerfing him was the right choice even though it made a really epic fight worse. The real problem was putting Ranni's quest in, and balancing it for, the midgame; if it was going to be gated by Radahn that quest chain should have been harder and after Morgott, but that can't really be redesigned after launch.

radahn isnt a boss that rushes u with a billion attack combo...having base stamina is totally doable with him. im trying him now on rune level 1 and his attacks are only an issue when it comes to positioning and timing of rolls, his attacks never exhaust your stamina unless you are really being inefficient with stamina management aka u are spamming roll or attacks. the main diff with pre nerf was hitbox and damage..which in that case your positioning and timing had to be better.

Originally, on the approach, you had to dodge the black hole snipe on foot with i-frames, and then mount and outrun the rain of arrows. So you had to pay careful attention to his windup so you could mount or dismount as needed (or count his attacks, IIRC it was three snipes, then rain). Now, you can easily evade both attacks from horseback. Also, in the second phase, those meteorites he summons over his head? Those things were insanely lethal originally. When they finally attacked you, they came all at once, moved extremely fast, and killed the shit out of you if they hit. It was a blink and you die attack. A lot of strats recommended simply staying away from him entirely until he'd used them against the summons. Now, they attack in spaced out pairs, and move much slower. It's pretty easy to dodge them with a pair of rolls.

The phantom hitboxes on his swords, the halo of meteors that waited forever to chase you with literally perfect tracking that made them almost impossible to avoid and not immediately die to, and finally the Sniper accurate arrows and gravity magic were literally unbearable on launch. He's significantly easier now. His health feels lower, his damage is definitely down, and his ability to knock you off torrent and stunlock you is much less noticeable. His nerfs were ultimately warranted, not because of difficulty, but the amount of content he's gatekeeping. And as long as he's barring all the content of Ranni's quest, he shouldn't be reverted. I definitely feel the changes were necessary, as the tracking and range on some of his attacks was just overbearing. Even Torrent couldn't outrun the fuckers attacks prenerf and everything was a touch of death of you hadn't hyper invested in HP. He definitely feels like a shell of his former self. But maybe that's fitting, in a way. We aren't supposed to be fighting the insurmountable General Radahn himself. We're fighting what's left of him.

Just some random points about the video. The lake of rot is older than malenia herself. It was created when malenia's mentor sealed the outer god of rot. The fight always starts at early morning and switches to night with radahn's meteor, I think this is meant to convey that the clash against radahn took a whole day rather than radahn pulling the sun with him.

The nerf wasn’t a nerf, it was fixing a bug that caused his attack hitboxes to desync. Also Ainsel river and the Lake of Rot have nothing to do with the battle between the Demigod* at the time Malenia, and Radahn, the lake of rot is where the outer god of rot is sealed, corrupting the nearby area underneath Liurnia, nowhere near Caelid. Caelid is more like an above ground reverse analogue of the lake of rot, as Siofra river beneath is is unaffected by the scarlet rot, while Liurnia above Ainsel river is unaffected by the rot beneath

Then I helped a friend out on it nearly 4 months later. I could tell the difference instantly. Like I get it but the point of Radahn and the point of Fromsoft games is "IT IS HARD!" Easy is summons, friends, item spams, and so many other ways, and I'm not saying thats bad. No God no if anything I encourage it, play your way. But don't complain and demand changes from the devs just because you can't beat a boss and refuse to do easier tactics. In the word of souls games "Get good." And I don't mean that in a bad way. "Get good." Just means practice, try harder, and learn what your doing and your tactics.

Radahn at the time you fight him is basically on the hospice, has lost all battle sense and turned into a cannibalistic beast, has to basically fight an army if you decide to summon, beat malenia and forced her to use her insta-win nuke on him, IS HOLDING BACK THE FUCKING STARS, and if that wasnt enough he gets nerfed by the game itself.

I just started playing Elden Ring this year, and so far I had just finished Limgrave and Liurnia of the Lakes, didn't even go to the Weeping Peninsula yet. I had seen all through the game how Radahn was considered the strongest demigod in the Lands Between, so I was just starting to explore Caelid as part of Ranni's questline. I got to Radahn and I saw everyone hyping him up, I got to the arena with it being massive and being able to summon a lot of NPCs... And then I beat Radahn on my second try, and on my first try I got him on low health. I thought it was ok for a demigod fight, I liked how cinematic it was and all, but also I just went on with the game and I didn't really remember the fight at all. I kinda stopped caring for Radahn aside from the lore, so-, yeah, it definitely hurt the game. I don't get why the developers nerfed him considering it's literally an open world game, if people wanted so badly to fight him they'd do it when they are ready, it's not even an obligatory fight, just let him be stronger, because even then he isn't even near late game bosses. I know Radahn is a husk of his former self, but at least make it believable that he was able to fight Malenia, don't you think???

Oh man, how do I even explain it. It took me three days to be high enough to fight Radhan pre patch. It was a love and hate relationship, hated that my methods weren’t working but loved how challenging it was and how much more hyper aware it made me. Really learning my movements to dodge AS MANY hits as possible and being able to read his moves/using his sound queue’s to maneuver around. The relief in defeating him was unimaginable and left me in awe with the cutscene that plays afterwards. When I heard about the patch and how nerfed Radhan was it boggled my mind because in my head I thought to myself “This is a souls game, why are they nerfing BOSSES?” Fighting Radhan with that patch just didn’t feel fun at all. It felt so underwhelming after it being so overwhelming. Kinda like your mom cooking your favorite dish then your dad trying to cook it the same way and makes it worse. It’s a somber feeling because you know some people probably won’t even have experienced Prime Radhan and won’t ever. I’m glad they gave back some of his damage but it just isn’t the same. Instead of looking forward to the boss fight, I now just see it as an optional fight that’s just meh. It sucks to see it that way but I just can’t fight him with the anticipation I had before

He destroyed the community during the first week of the game. Idiots today say “he’s not nerfed, they reverted it” NOOOOOOOOOOO! They changed his gigantic hitboxes on most attacks! That is 10000000% a nerf! Hell, the fact you don’t get hit at all is a way bigger change than a fight doing 5 or 9 damage, because hitboxes can be the difference between taking damage or not taking any damage!
@edgarahcow7748
@edgarahcow7748 4 месяца назад
Basically, they just fixed some faulty hitboxes (which are a common problem in FromSoftware games) and accidentally reduced his damage, then fixed the damage to be what it was supposed to be. People say he's easier, because of 2 things, yes, many players simply got better. And second, now the fight doesn't have the bad hitboxes it used to have. So he is easier, yes, because now he's less bullshit and more the properly designed fight he was always supposed to be.

Fromsoft games are not hard. They just have bad user interfaces, no adequate tutorials, gatekeep their "easy mode" options behind boss fights that range from out of the way to nearly impossible to find, and expect you to intuit mechanics that never look like they might make the game easier at first glance. What makes Elden Ring easier than other souls borne games? They added a map screen, npc summons, and made the co-op slightly better than the barely usable co-op in all the older games.

The worst thing about radahn's nerf is that it goes against the lore, everything about radahn tells the play "hey you see that big mother fucker over there?, yeah he's the real deal, strongest of the demi gods an absolute monster on the battle field, so it's ganna be an absolutely Hella of a fight" And the fact his weapon is one of the strongest in the game, dude was accurate to his lore, now it's not the same, back in the day pre nerf, it took me DAYS of trying to defeat him in my first play through, mean while in my last play through he was an absolute joke it's really sad, back then the other charactors reaction to the fight made sense, IT WAS A GLORIOUS BATTLE, now it's desapointing, dude is hype up to be the strongest of the dami gods, and he was a good guy too, protecting his land, mastering a whole type of magic just so he will always be with his hose, and fighting you while also holding the stars in the sky while the rot is eating away at his mind, he's the chadest of the chads, even though he's not his son, godfrey must be proud, he and malenia should both be the hardest bosses to beat, it's unfairz if you ganna nerf the radahn you should also nerf melania,

I don't think he's any easier, I think that he's more balanced. I was able to beat him at a fairly low level when I first played through the game even though it took me a long time, but there was something off. I could definitely feel that his hurt boxes were bigger than the actual model or in most cases bigger than the effect on the screen. This realization led to an annoying play style where I would only attack during a handful of moves often only getting one hit in or relying entirely on the summons to distract him so I could so some more damage. Post patch, the fight feels a lot more reasonable. I genuinely feel like I'm dodging between the swords and arrows along with his spells, whereas before I was running for my life just to get out of his range. He still beats my ass, he's surly no pushover. But I have improved at the game too.

My interpretation is that they really designed the fight for the Radahn *Festival*. The player and lots of allies swarming him and defeating him together, thus the large hitboxes of his attacks. But players actually wanted to defeat him without summoning, as hardcore purists do, which was then of course extremely hard. By nerfing Radahn to the level of a regular boss, he became way too easy if summons were used, so they reverted it.

Interesting vid but you got two main things wrong first of all melania didn’t create the lake of rot that was the stage where the blind swordsman fought against the rot god and looking at the location of the lake it’s under liurnia so it doesn’t make much sense for mealania’s nuking of caelid to create the lake of rot under liurnia Secondly you don’t need to do ranni’s quest line you just need to get to altus plateau via the dectus lift and pass the time at the nearest site of grace. And some food for thought as when we get to sellen’s quest at the end of we side with her and kill jerren we get “bloody finger vanquished” meaning our good old witch hunter might have had a hidden agenda to kill radahn for the rold of blood.

Especially those flying boulders in phase two together with those sword hitboxes made me hate radahn. I don’t remember by stats but I went there pretty early so it was probably less than intended and of course insanely high expectations for the game itself. Nowadays radahn is a joke. For me his pre nerf state was hard for the wrong reasons (oneshot attacks) but in retrospective they shouldn’t have nerfed him that much. Especially his HP is insanely low while doing no damage to the summons. Although I have to say nowadays I appreciate the boss for what it is a lot more.

Now this is an unpopular take, but radahns nerf is WAY overhyped. I downpatched my game a couple of days ago and went to Radahn at around level 60, beating him on my second attempt 1v1. The main reason we all remember Radahn being so difficult before the nerf was quite plainly that we were scared of him and he is very good at punishing people who play scared and don't know his moves. What makes Radahn so easy nowadays is that good positioning gives you MASSIVE openings, and that applies to pre-nerf Radahn too. Almost everybody who i watch doing their first playthrough nowadays struggles with Radahn as much as we did back in the day. TL,DR: Us getting gud played a much bigger role in making this boss easier than the nerf

The problem is that Radan was meant to be a puzzle boss. Not in the sense that he, "has a unique mechanic or some sequence of events to beat him." He's a puzzle boss in that you were always supposed to use Scarlet Rot to kill him. The idea was that you'd come back to the fight once you acquired rot grease, spells, weapons, etc. - really just anything that could inflict Scarlett Rot onto him. Once you triggered the Scarlett Rot effect his health would melt rather quickly. The first proc usually taking 1/2 his health. Followed by a 2nd trigger removing the other 1/2. Essentially it was a fight you were meant to survive. Not fight in honorable combat. People treated Radhan like a Dark Souls boss. One that people would grind and learn his patterns to fight. But I don't believe this is how he was meant to be fought. Remember his lore - he fought Melanie to a standstill. It was only Melanie's Scarlet Rot that stopped him. Radhan wasn't a Dark Souls boss meant to be fought in honorable combat. You were meant to put him out of his misery. Melanie was a Dark Souls boss meant for honorable combat. Radhan was an Elden Ring boss, and meant you needed to explore and challenge him when you were stronger. The problem isn't so much with the boss or the mechanic to defeat Radhan. It's that no one, myself included, realized this pre-nerf. Everyone tried to fight Radhan in honorable combat. No one just 'left' the fight to level up. Only to come back to fight Radhan when they were stronger and appropriately equipped. No one wanted to use Scarlet Rot because it made the fight 'feel' cheap. Even though that was the intended way to kill him. And thus - Radhan was nerfed into something that could be fought solo. Instead of being a rabid dog with rabies you'd run away from only to put down later on, he became the fight we have today.

Now it's not even needed, I can just run in and barrage with lightning until he gets super close where I just finish him off with Melee, where as before I had maybe five seconds of melee before death was inevitable.

Went in for the literal final hit at lvl 70. Had a damage reduction flask active, all my summon bros had been murdered. I run up, he has his 5 floating meteors. I raise shield. First one canceled my damage reduction. 2, 3 break my shield, 4th hits and knocks me down. Dude towers over me, raises both grav swords, and 1 shots my bitch ass right as I’m standing up before I can roll dodge. From full health and damage resist buff to dead in like half a second. Fucking legendary. A goddamn menace to society

Not gonna lie I assumed his first nerf made malenia stronger and was just fromsofts way of saying "we'll give you what you want but still f*ck you."

Imo fixing an issue, even if it makes it easier, isn’t a nerf.

Ah I remember fighting him pre nerf as my first run being a strength int character. A hard fought battle it was indeed!

Radahn pre-nerf was the most hyped I ever felt in a game when I defeated him. This was my first souls game and I finally understood what the games were about when I did that. I've come to love the struggle

I remember beating pre nerf Radahn and having to use absolutely everything in my arsenal and every single summon just to get to the second phase. But beating him was such an accomplishment. I fought him a couple weeks ago and didn't use any summons or anything so for me personally I think he's far far easier now than he was before which is such a shame.

The day changes to night because Ranninis watching over us. Offering her protrction as well. I theorize Radhan planned to bring down many stars. But Ranni's dark moon helped to block it.

This is probably going to be long. I over share lol First off, I really enjoyed your video! I was very late to the party for Elden Ring. Over the years, everyone I know who games, warned me off FromSoft/Souls games “you’ll hate it. They are too difficult. You’re a completionist, you’ll get frustrated. They are confusing” and so on. I wish I hadn’t listened to them. I bought a disc copy of the game about 18 months after release, quite randomly while shopping for something else. I bought it because it was on special and looked cool. I consider myself a casual gamer so before I start a game I look up what the currency is and that’s it. I jumped into the game blind. I had no idea what I was doing. It took me a while to understand npc’s were giving me quests 😅 I ran around getting killed a lot, and enjoyed that aspect. I figured out that’s part of the game and it’s an interesting way to learn how to beat enemies etc. I went into Caelid super early as a weak mage. Well before Weeping Peninsula or Liurnia. I died a lot, but found good gear and the ball rune farm. Which I also died to a lot to😂 I didn’t know about the Meta, I didn’t understand how stats worked or how to make a good build. After spending heaps of hours there I decided I’d avoid the castle as I’d assumed the boss would be super hard. So I went off and explored elsewhere. I’m surprised I didn’t break any quests. I also forgot to level up often so yeah l lost heaps of runes regularly. By the time I got to Redahn I was level 50. I had a poor mage build. I was disappointed it only took 2 attempts to defeat him, and no I didn’t hide and let the npc’s kill him. That’s when I looked up patch notes. I’m so disappointed I was late to the party and I didn’t get to fight him or use certain weapons pre nerf. However the game is still great. I ended up looking up a guide for Ranni’s quest as I was confused as to when it would end lol I then went off on my own and would come back to that walkthrough to see if I’d missed any key items - more often than not, I hadn’t. I love open world games, I love the fact there aren’t a million quest icons on the map. I love that there isn’t a quest log. I love how you can play this game literally any way you want. I eventually worked out how to make a good build and got platinum on my first run. As a new comer to souls like games, it’s certainly not easy, but that’s what made it a fun experience for me. The fact I had to use my brain to not only learn how things worked but to also need to retain information and figure out quests and where to go to continue the main story from cryptic npc conversations made it all the more enjoyable! I’m in journey 2. I’m over levelled but don’t care. Now that I’ve learned about the meta, I will eventually create a new character to pvp and hopefully co-op with (considering I don’t know anyone in real life who plays, I’m hoping I can eventually figure out how to co-op and make online game friends lol) these are 2 things I’ve never really done in a game and I’ve been a casual gamer since the 80’s with a Commodore 64 in primary school! I’m looking forward to the DLC, and will pre-order it, something else I’ve not done before. I think Elden Ring has been a great introduction to souls like games and I’m currently in the process of purchasing/downloading all that came before and am excited for the challenge.

Pre-nerf Radahn was an experience! They give you tons of summons and you could resummon them. It was a mid-game difficulty check before you got to Altus Plateau and Leyendel.

As incredible as the star fall attack is, I think Ryker’s second phase is the most epic. Also I didn’t find him all that hard at least compared to a lot of other bosses. I did beat him pre nerf.. in fact I was unaware they nerfed him at all. Not tryna brag I just really never understood people calling him the hardest boss. I found him on the easier side once you know his attack pattern

I've played the game just after the release and then quite recently replayed it. Meaning I've done the Redahn twice, once before nerf and now. I've got to say that the boss actually felt quite substantially easier. I'm not sure though if it's more so due to me not forcing it early in the gameplay, getting there prepared, with more game experience and knowing the mechanics, or due to the nerfs... I guess it's just about half of both. I'm all up for making the bosses even harder then they are atm though, since the Souls games gameplay practically solely revolves arround those, and they get much easier overall later in the game once You get to prepare your whole build.

Yup, I recall being frustrated enough to skip and only came back much later in the game when I was much stronger but mostly because I really wanted that mimic tear and explore the other underground areas. I think at that point game was patched cause he went down way too easy IMO, which disappointed me.
