This is an independent, not for profit channel celebrating the pioneering investigative work of The Cook Report, its presenter Roger Cook and the team behind him. Nothing like his series was made before or has been made since.
We have acquired most of these episodes unofficially by reaching out to the Great British public. So some of what we’ve found is not the best technical quality and we don’t have the copyright, which belongs to ITV. Do you have any old Cook Report programmes in your VHS collection? in 1992 i bought the 45 of minnie ripperton, song called 'loving you' at a car boot sale. brand new and in a stack of about 50 records all the same. i looked at her biog and she had been trying for commercial success for years and was at the point of quitting the business because it had evaded her. so sometimes chart rigging gave us a wonderful talent that we otherwise wouldn't have known about. she had an 8 octave voice up into the whistling register but died ever so young leaving small children. i think she only made one album.

I used to work for Woolworth's at their old record bar. Their charts were not the same as the "official" Gallop top 40 used by the BBC. (Not that they varied that much either). The main difference was that the Woolworth"s in store chart took into account pre-order sales. So if a record was really popular it could chart a week or two early, whereas in the official Top 40 chart it would already have to have been on sale for a week. I remember when the Spice Girls were really popular, for example, they would chart before their records were even released. Everyone already knew they were going straight to number one.

Yeah, I remember back in the day that was quite a popular betting market. That was all killed by 'The X Factor', because they could effectively monopolise that 'Christmas singles' market.

@@MsVanorak I bought Rovers Return by John Waite in a Woolworth's bargain bin. I only knew Missing You at the time. It was a speculative purchase and turned out to be one of my favourite albums for years and he is still to this day one of my favourite artists. From that find I ended up buying all his albums and Bad English albums ( supergroup he was in with ex Journey members from 1988 to 1991).

I remember buying T.Rex 'TANX' LP. it jumped on the record player, took it back and got it exchanged, still jumped, did that 3 times, later discovered each exchange counted as a sale and they sent out a lot that jumped to inflate the sales figures.

The commentary is below: "And this is the team that pulled off our elaborate hoax. Debbie Currie, the artist, their manager Barry Toames, and record producer Mike Stock who was part of Stock Aitken Waterman who had over 150 hits. No prizes for guessing who made-up the fab four."

It was around this time all the local commercial stations banded together and made the "Pepsi Charts" which ran at the same time as Radio 1's "official countdown". Theirs was based on how often each song had been played by all their stations rather than sales... is anyone thinking what im thinking? 😂😂

My Mum played badminton with Mrs Cook. She had some great stories but I only remember a couple. One day the cooks entered a restaurant. Before they had even been seated someone made a runner. The Downside of being the cooks would have probably been the security issues. At one point, Goldfinger (palmer) had money on Rogers head.

An interesting subject. This is old news now, but in the end, you can push a record, but the proper hits only come about when they are genuinely popular. That said, obviously there was corruption here, and Roger Cook was a very good journalist.

For those who think he should be or should've been knighted: By today's standards that proves nothing. Any Tom, Dick & Harry gets knighted, depending on whom you know or which secret society you belong to!!! Knighthood is not the same as 40 or 50 years ago when those who received it, deserved it. It is all fixed and paid for behind closed doors, exactly like Peerage. Roger was a true national hero. Let's carry on with his name as the greatest journalist that ever lived. Rest with the best.

And what of all those "bought in" records? Were they returned to the record companies to be resent out to shops? 3 years after this report, Napster came along and screwed their game. That's why they were so pissed. It had nothing to do with depriving artists from their income, it was about them losing the ability to rig the market

I’m thinking of producing a modern day version of a hard hitting investigative journalism type show. Like the Cook report but with a more slapstick approach.
