After the miners’ strike in 1984, there were accusations that Arthur Scargill had misappropriated National Union of Mineworkers funds and that money which should have gone to the striking miners had never reached them. The Cook Report investigated over two programmes. Witnesses said that, UK public donations aside, the funds had come from two sources - from Russian miners showing solidarity with their British brothers, and from the coffers of Colonel Gaddafi in Libya.
Shortly after the programme, and following Perestroika, many Official Russian documents previously classified as secret confirmed that what had been said in The Cook Report about donations from Russian miners was true. Monies intended for the NUM and the miners’ hardship fund had been secretly diverted instead to another, little known and totally separate outfit of which Arthur Scargill also happened to be president - the International Mineworkers Organisation in Paris.
As for the Libyan money, there was never any satisfactory explanation as to its final resting place. The NUM’s former chief executive, Roger Windsor, had alleged in the first programme that some of this money - delivered in cash and passed through an offshore bank account in the name of a deceased relative - had been used by Scargill to pay off the mortgage on his large new home. Scargill’s supporters argued that he didn’t have a mortgage, but an unsecured home loan - which in this context amounted to exactly the same thing.
A subsequent independent investigation was sharply critical of Scargill’s conduct during the strike. Following this, the NUM (President: A. Scargill) sued the IMO (President: A. Scargill) for the return of £1.4 million - finally settling out of court for around half that amount. By then, NUM membership had plummeted from over 400,000 to under 400. In 2012 it emerged in court cases between the union and its former president that a substantial proportion of members' subscriptions was being spent on expenses for Scargill, including unauthorised rent payments for a £1.5 million flat in London. The whole messy business was best summed up by the Daily Mirror- normally a staunchly left-wing newspaper - with which The Cook Report had shared information on the story: ‘Mr Scargill began the miners’ strike with a very large union and a very small house; he ended the strike with a very small union and a very large house’.

Go read "The Enemy within: Thatcher's Secret War Against the Miners". At the time it was reported that Arthur Scargill embezzled money from the NUM. However, later we found out that this was not true and it turned out the intellegince services put money in his account and then sent the bank statement to the papers. Absolute disgrace that the state done this to one of our own citizens.

Scargill was a loser who conned Union members to follow his lies, and support a strike. NUM members were desperate. Scargill gave them hope. Then robbed them. There are NO TRADES UNION LEADERS WHO DO NOT LIVE A GOOD LIFESTYLE. Paid for by the poor members, who have to live hand to mouth. The Union Leaders denounce Capitalism, yet socialism is more biased against the needy. and want to get as much as they can out of their struggling members. With Capitalism you have an idea where you are going. Socialism is all smoke, mirrors and deception.

A repulsive figure . He was also totally inflexible . He had them by the nuts and could have easily reached a deal ie better pay and that would have been best for both sides BUT he was hell bent in bringing down Thatcher's gov. Revolution is what he had in mind. The Brits dont like that which is further proof how little grasp he had of the national mood let alone on the other half . Not everyone is working class . He would have fitted right into 1917 revolution in the soviet union .

About 6 years ago I remember reading an academic paper written in the 1990's (if my memory serves me right) by a former miner who had been a staunch supporter of the NUM and Scargill. During his research he. learned that during the 70s the Labour government had closed more mines than the Conservatives ever had and that about 100 more mines were due to be closed by the coal board on the instructions of Labour. Maggie as the new PM ordered a review of the planned closures and as a result about 25% were to be saved from closing down. But Scargill wanted to make a name for himself which he managed to do whilst destroying an entire industry.
@THEJR-of5tf
@THEJR-of5tf Год назад
Wilson and Callaghan, were closing uneconomical mines without a problem from the Unions. When Maggie did the same Scargill said a miners strike would bring down the tories. However Maggie wrong footed him, The "THUGS" sent in by Maggie were actually sent in by Scargill to further discredit the Government. Allegedly Scargill and his cronies amassed a fortune from the strike. When the Men and their families were getting into debt, and starving. Socialism is like Orwell's 1948. Everyone is equal!! Long before anyone heard of Paxman, Scargill was asked a question and went on one of his rants, the question was repeated and he went on another rant, question repeated again, he started another rant then stopped and said "I've already answered that" Interviewer said "No you haven't, I've asked you but you didn''t answer the question" Scargill completely lost it and went mental, he made all sorts of threats, this was to be the man's last day in radio, he would never work in any media again etc, etc. I thought that should have been repeated every hour on every radio station to let those who didn't know already what a shit he was, but he must have had some veto on the broadcast, shame.

In 1994 a French court (because he stole the money in France)found he stole £29,000 on the money and used it to pay his mortgage off and he ended up having to pay £250,000 in costs as well. Windsor was also paid £50,000 by The Daily Mirror for this story. In 2002 the then editor of the Daily Mirror apologised to Scargill and admitted it was a mistake and that they paper had been conned. It appears Roger Cook is not able to admit his error.

Family members were miners, I've heard more than a couple of accounts of union reps on the picket lines with big wads of cash and registers to give out to those picketing. The idea was, you gave your name, they ticked you off and you got your money for being there. You can probably guess what happened the union reps were ticking off the names of people that weren't there and then pocketing the cash themselves. Money is always the common denominator regardless of which side of the political fence you sit on.

Scargill started the strike with a small house and a big union. He finished the strike with a big house and a small union. Plainly this man was a crook who took the hardworking miners for fools. These corrupt union officials robbed the miners and laughed all the way. With these type of people running the union the strike was doomed to fail. Scargill consorted with Libya a regime based on terror. Scargill’s regime was based on keeping men working underground in dirty dangerous conditions while he creamed off huge profits for himself. I remember Ravenscraig being closed and other industries being shafted. Bad craic back then and I feel terrible that hardworking folk went through so much strife while politicians could afford to drag out negotiations and decide to close shipyards, factories and mines without giving 2 phucks about the people it affected. I grew up in a small fishing village and it died on it’s arse long ago. At least we have the NHS and the Ministry of Defence up here, they’re the two biggest employers.
