I'm deeply touched by the mango tree story. I'm also glad that people still value some things, that most other seem to have forsaken.

Shamus and Jake, this was one of the best videos I have watched in a long time. Thank you for filming this and letting us see her beautiful yard. It is inspiring and humbling at the same time. I really enjoyed your pontificating right around minute 11. (paraphrased): "Your water bill replaces your psychologist bill. Take a look at the big picture and spend time in your garden with nature". This was really awesome, thanks!

Actually, the wall has been compromised a bit: you can see the blocks slightly separating right above Jake's head when he squats. My neighboor's pine tree lifted a section of our shared wall by almost a foot. My hypothesis is that it was due to superficial watering. I planted several trees inches from the fence, including a jacaranda tree a foot off the wall and consistently deep watered it and the wall is intact.

We bought a mango tree from Shamus 2 summers ago, and it's growing beautifully on the south side of our house in old town Scottsdale. It's 2ft from a block wall, I tented it in winter, and it's now budding!

One thing I learned from you is protect baby trees. I plant pigeon peas next to new trees. They grow at least 6 ft in one season and provide N, soil stabilization, and shade to the tree!

I just found this and I have to echo Mark Barton's comment - Jake, your best video and Shamus, love the spiritual aspect of this lady's garden. The spiritual side of things is so often missing in videos, even where it's clear that there's a lot of love for what the presenter is doing. I love and appreciate the that you are both so comfortable in talking about it and the woman''s wonderful relationship with her mother. So much joy in this vid.

Wow. Fantastic trees. Many people say trees grown from seed are hardier because they have better stronger tap roots. You could make a case for that in this ladies yard.

Not to be a Debby Downer, but that wall is somewhat compromised by the mango as you can see through the cracks in the joints at the 8:40 mark. Less than I would have thought, but there is some lifting going on there. It is encouraging to see that it's minor compared to the size of the tree, but the wall could use some work to make sure it doesn't get any worse.

Since these are multigenerational avocado and mango seedlings their seeds may make very good adapted seedlings for rootstock in our soils. Since the original tree was planted in her mother's honor perhaps her mother's name on the seedling rootstock.... just thinking out loud

Shamus - I watched the video called "How to Grow Tropical Fruit Trees in a Desert Garden" posted by "Learn Organic Gardening at GrowingYourGreens ." Where you both tasted the Carrie, Coconut Cream, Kesar and Cotton Candy Mango varieties. My question is: Can I buy fruit or seeds from any of these Mango trees you sell to attempt sprouting and planting from seed? I realize this takes much longer to get mature enough to bear fruit but I am wondering if most of the reason why this lady next to Piestewa Peak had such success growing large and well established trees is because she started each of them from seed. I live in Mesa, AZ by the way and have wanted to grow Mangos and Acerolas and Avocados and many other trees I used to see all the time in Brasil where I served a mission a quarter century ago. I just discovered you and your friends who are successfully doing this in our area. BLESS YOU ALL!!!

The wall is not made with half inch between blocks. So the wall is compromised with the close proximity of the trees to the wall. The video is awesome but need to plant away from the wall about 10 or more.

Would love to see a post summer update on pre harvest fruit on this Ladys Mango trees. Even a TASTE test would be cool. Does she compost the Avos pre flower leaf drop for the compost/mulch under tree as I just leave to naturally compost under mine. Also i did notice that her mangos have lifted the bricks in the fence - only 3 or 4mm but enough to keep an eye on.

You use a tool, is a fruit picker, you can easily make one with a soda plastic bottle, you just cut the bottle half in zigzag, and put the opening in a long stick, that way you can easily cut the steam, and pick the fruit without falling to the ground and getting ruined. Good luck.
