Character is the core of story. A primary reason most of us read fiction or watch film is to connect with characters and follow along with those characters' journeys, experiencing the highs and lows of existence vicariously through their struggles. A story needs at least one character (or a stand-in for a character) to even qualify as a story.
But what is the core of character? What is it about a character that earns our investment in the story? Let's discuss that here.
Creative Writing Corner is all about helping YOU become a better word-slinger and storyteller. CWC host Luke J. Morris is a published author and full-time English and Creative Writing teacher with a Master's degree in Creative Writing, and on this channel he shares what he's learned over 30+ years of writing and study. Enjoy and engage!
If you'd like to support the channel (and judge if the host walks his talk), you can pick up a copy of Luke's short story collection 'Bad Art' here:

I forgot about this channel, I really wish YT would actually recommend things I would like to watch because I get lost in the feed, as I'm sure I'm not alone here. Great info my dude.

Thank you!! Part of that is certainly my fault, as life got in the way and I fell off my posting schedule for a while. But I now have a bunch of scripts and ideas in the pipeline that'll become videos soon. I'm happy to be back, and I appreciate you sticking around!

My favorite inmate, Luke. They even gave him a pile of books to look cool with and let him put a thrift store sweater over his orange jumpsuit, which looks like, due to the large seams, was also worn inside out. Satire!

Ssshhh! No one's supposed to know! (The guards are getting tired of passing me all the mailed-in marriage proposals.)

@@creativewritingcorner I would have figured there were enough hot eligible men in jail with you already that gave you frequent honey buns. Or maybe you were looking for that perfect female beard. Satire!

Even though I always wondered that I feel like I do character drive stories but in genre, while Truby and the like told me that is not how that works. That insight that I might do tension driven stories even though I stick close to characters and not so much to genre plots just opened my eyes regarding my own storytelling. Thanks!

i sound like a broken record but, wow. every time, a gold mine! Exercise: I'm currently in the plot phase of a character who has been trained to be a killing machine. He believes that's his purpose and wants to be recognized as the best in a society that worships it. Problem is, he isn't cut out to be one.

Ooh, I like that! It sets up multiple external and internal conflicts. Thanks for the kind words, and thanks again for watching!

It's a shame that Burroway's book is so hard to find at a reasonable price = desire. Thanks for sharing, much to think about.

Agreed! It, like my degree, was a heck of an investment. Thanks for watching!

Listening to your explanation, I couldn't help but think of One Piece. I can't think of a story in which the characters' desires are more clearly and openly established, even very minor ones. That's probably why it's been such a phenomenon for the last 25+ years. Great food for thoughts. Side note: looking forward to your future videos! Happy new year!

Yes! That's a great example. I'm planning to do an episode on anime/manga soon, so I'll keep that in mind. Thanks for watching!

I don’t have a tension building technique or anything I’m just hoping that after the first draft I can see where those kinds of tonal shifts can happen because I know that’s where the real story is
@creativewritingcorner
@creativewritingcorner 6 месяцев назад
Absolutely! The seeds of the story are planted in the first draft, but establishing motivations and tightening tension throughout the story takes time and attention in the later stages.

a really funny and not super accurate thing that I like to tell people is that a story can have decent characters and crap plot and still be bearable, but even the best plot can't survive with bad characters. obviously, it's not super accurate because isekai anime is allowed to exist, most of which has shit plot AND shit characters.

That's a great way to put it. I can think of plenty of stories - particularly long-running TV shows - where the plots left plenty to be desired, but the characters kept me coming back for more. I can't think of a story where the characters bored me that I ever wanted to continue. But as you pointed out, like every true statement about writing, that too has its sad exceptions.
