Yes on the “elitism” in patterns. I’m tired of seeing patterns that would cost $300 to make an average size. Several knitting influencers are really promoting this lately and it is so discouraging. Thanks for keeping things real for us.

I agree that the fashion just now for holding two yarns together increases the cost, my personal gripe is that I find mohair and alpaca itchy to wear, so I like to have an alternative suggestion. I am not however, averse to splurging on wool that takes my fancy!, but I agree on having a broad range of yarn suggestions in a pattern to make our crafting community more inclusive. I loved this episode, you are so enthusiastic, and welcoming to our beloved craft.

I am definitely in the "no fluff" camp. I don't like the look of fuzzy yarn though I know many people do. Thank you for bringing up a touchy topic re: the cost of working garments in certain yarns.
@thecornishknitter
@thecornishknitter 11 месяцев назад
Thank you and you are not alone I’m not liking fluff. I don’t mind fluff when it is held alongside another yarn as it only give a halo effect but I only use it occasionally. I wouldn’t be a fan of a solely fluff garment. I like options for people that don’t like, or can’t afford, multiple yarns really. All they need to do is give the alternative weight without people having to second guess them I feel then everyone can make their own choice 🤷‍♀️

2-3 yarns held together: YES please give us alternatives for single strand! So much easier to work 1 strand, and mohair is not my fave (fluff getting in my mouth and eyes). The more we keep asking designers the more they are apt to listen. Thanks for speaking out ❤

Thank you Jane. In terms of costs I believe it should be about encouraging individuals to take up knitting and not everyone has the funds to buy lots of yarn. There are so many benefits including those on mental health when taking up a creative hobby. On another subject I love the colour of the Ranunculus Sweater you were wearing, it really suits you.

I am retired and live on a budget so not always able to afford more expensive yarns. There are a few websites that help to substitute yarns and I watched Beth McDonald Stone's new podcast and she talks a bit about knitting with what you have rather than feeling the need to use the same yarn the designer used.

In my younger days when knitting for the babies and then onto the young school ages, it was not only for pleasure, I loved knitting, but for the economical side. And I would have people say, I love that I wish I could have one of those for my little girls, or something like that. So I would knit one for that little girl also, because it was so cheap to do. Today a very different story. Not only the suggested yarn for the pattern has become very expensive but all knitting yarn as well. I live in North America and top quality yarns have almost become unrealistic to knit with, some being $42 Canadian dollars for a 50g ball.
@thecornishknitter
@thecornishknitter 11 месяцев назад
Wow that is expensive. The sheep farmers get a pittance for their fleeces so it is a shame it is so expensive.How lovely that you knitted those sweaters for other little girls. Hopefully knitting still gives you the same pleasure whatever you choose to knit with. 😊

Agree about 3 yarns together. Knitting the Ranunculus even with short sleeves with a mohair is way too hot for Australian summers. Defeats the point of knitting a short sleeved garment.

Great podcast. Your thoughts on the affordability of knitting is so relevant. Experienced knitters can usually calculate for a more affordable yarn substitute, making adjustments when swatching to reach the required gauge but what about new less confident knitters? To keep a craft alive, we need a stream of new knitters joining us in our obsession. New knitters lack the confidence to make yarn substitutions and can be put off the craft of they find they are paying a large sum for the specific yarn mentioned in a pattern.

Thank you for mentioning patterns with more than one yarn held together. As a person on a very tight budget who likes to use natural fibre, I would love to see patterns with the total yarn weight included and maybe some yarn suggestions. On another note, you were saying how hot it was at Unravel and we have had very high temperatures again this summer! I am SO glad that I have discovered linen yarn! I have made myself 2 linen tops and have another on the needles. This has been a game changer to me! It means I can wear my hand knits any day of the year now. The yarns I used are sold for patterns designed to be held with at least one other yarn. I made Alice, by Hiroko Fukastu twice in Isager yarn. Once in Bolumin and once in Trio and one on my needles also in Trio. They are fabulous for summer tops! I will look into finding a British linen yarn for next year.
@thecornishknitter
@thecornishknitter 11 месяцев назад
Thank you 😊 a lot of the plant based fibre yarns are cooler both to knit and to wear I agree. Quite a few of our customers though don’t like the inflexibility of the actual knitting with linen or cotton as it is harder on their hands. That’s why it’s great that we all like different fibres 🥰😊

I am so with you on how it can be so expensive to knit up a design. I like how Andrea Mowery does with pattern give alternative yarn in various price range that work for her patterns. I wish they all would follow her idea. That is a win-win for the consumer and the designer. I personally would be attracted more to her patterns because of that. Also I am not the best for figuring out weight when the pattern calls for more than 1 yarn. Mainly because I haven't knitted with the yarns most are use and not knowing how it knits up I have no idea what to substitute. Thank you for expressing this subject. Kat from Oklahoma
@thecornishknitter
@thecornishknitter 11 месяцев назад
Thank you Kat. I am a fan of her patterns too as although she uses expensive yarns for her samples she does offer alternatives in the actual pattern. I agree if designers would just add this simple thing then more people would buy their patterns. May have an agreement with the yarn producer maybe 🤔

I so agree with what you said about making patterns more reasonable and accessible, at least as an option. Knitting is an ancient craft which for centuries was the life blood of poor crofters. It can be beautifully creative and artistic AND expensive but it’s also an art which has sustained poor families for generations
@thecornishknitter
@thecornishknitter 11 месяцев назад
I do agree. And some of the yarn suppliers from poorer countries use this trade to support their families too. I just hope more designers consider who their customers are when making yarn recommendations. 😊

I am subscribed to someone who designs patterns which I admit are lovely, she always gives a few options to knit it in. Either using two yarns together which can work out expensive, but she also gives a cheaper alternative maybe in a dk, and the patterns she does are always designed to use a cheaper alternative. which is a good idea since not all of us can afford really expensive yarn. For the past few years i have being using a lot of natural fibres which i find better especially for shawls and jumpers and cardigans. If i am doing blankets i would use an acrylic base or a mixture due to the fact it is a bit more durable and you can get some good mixed acrylic bases in yarn.

Brilliant podcast thankyou, enjoyed it so much. I agree the new designs of knitting are becoming rather expensive to knit and would love to knit a lot of the designs but the yarn required is too much. The wool at the show was fabulous. Loved the pressed flowers shawl and the yarn chosen, really want to do that. I live in NZ and we are going into spring/summer but won't let that stop me knitting a shawl. I will keep an eye out for when you have the yarn available. There were some beautiful knitted garments at the show . I started to watch your live shows and was interested in the dialogue re catagorising the "favourites" . Hi Jane, Im so glad you bought up the subject about the expense of using multiple yarns in patterns. Ive been thinking about this a lot, and i think if designer's could spread the test knits around different climates it would help out us knitters especially here in Australia. I realise you couldn't have a wool fair isle design knitted in a lightweight cotton, but patterns would surely be more inviting if you had options. Secondly, we have a great wool industry here in Australia and New Zealand, but most of the recommended yarns arent available here, so ordering from o/seas can be quite $$$ Just my little opinion 😊
@thecornishknitter
@thecornishknitter 11 месяцев назад
Thank you. What a good idea! Sharing test knitting with other climates would help the designer signpost to alternative options. I have never been to your area of the world but a woolly friend went to Nz this year and came back with all sorts of lovely yarn. Including possum yarn! 😊

I am quite late to the party seeing this episode in January, but I have to give my agreement to your opinion about all the patterns that require more than one strand of yarn. I’ve been looking for weeks now for a nice simple pullover or cardigan and simply can’t find one that doesn’t use some form of fluff in addition to the main yarn. It’s so frustrating! I don’t want to hold two or three strands together and if I want fluff I can find it without holding two strands. Yes, designers should either stop or provide alternative yarn weights for single strand construction! Thanks for speaking for all of us who are frustrated by this trend!!!😊

Hello Jane, back in the day ( 60’s / 70’s ) 100% Merino Wool was the one available to knit with here in OZ, I had experimented with SW merino & nylon hand dyed yarn over the past few years but have totally been Disappointed with how my garments have stretched after washing and blocking, I have gone back to old school and only knit with Commercial Wool and Wool / Cotton blend. Hand Dyed Wool is very expensive for a jumper quantity, Our commercial Merino Wool here is Beautifully Soft and very affordable at our larger stores. I do at times hand dye my own using natural dyes, which can also be cost affective. I agree about Designers using more than 1 strand of yarn together, they are often given the yarn from the producer to work with, so they are not thinking of the consumer. Love your Sock Boxes they look Beautiful. Thank You for sharing Unravel it was Lovely to see all the natural dyed wool, So Beautiful. Take Care 💐❤

What a lovely surprise when you can’t sleep and turn on the iPad to find one of your favourite podcasts! Totally agree with your comments on holding more than one strand of yarn together, it is off putting purely for costs, great for stash busting but there should be an alternative option. Thank you for the show tour l was on grandma duty this weekend, and didn’t think it wise to drag 4 children along! Looked like a great show. Excited about the sock club!!!!!🧶❤

Thank you so much for talking about this subject. I live in NYC and unfortunately most knitters are not being taught about gauge and yarn substitution. It s shameful. I love to tell people that I meet how to do this because so many knitters feel hindered. We have an indie mail order co here in the states that promotes natural wool and sells hat or mitten kits that cost $100 plus shipping! I have ordered 2 sweater amounts of Nutiden that were cheaper! There are shops that actually charge the same amount for every skein in their shop. Can you imagine shopping where every skein is $34? I do not understand these designers who are working in cahoots with yarn cos that promote this. I also highly recommend that American knitters should know that a lot of yarn that is promoted as exclusive comes from the same factory in South American that Cascade gets their yarn from. So if you are knitting your fifth half and half shawl and you can’t afford Purl Soho know that the same yarn that you buy there can be found from Cascade.

Thank you so much for your comments. I am always talking to people about gauge and have even printed a free handout for people in the shop so it helps with decision making. We need to make sure everyone can knit. 😊

Im fairly new to knitting and would really like to knit a garment with hand dyed yarn. I bought the Whitmore cardigan pattern in the hopes of making my first ever knitted garment. I naively started looking for nice yarn but soon realised that it was way out of my budget. Upwards of £80 for a cardigan! Takes my breath away. I can't be the only one that feels like this.
@thecornishknitter
@thecornishknitter 11 месяцев назад
No you are definitely not alone in thinking that. My rationale is that it will take me hours and hours to knit it so I need to love it. Natural fibre yarns will last for years but acrylics will not so I go by cost per wear and the impact on the environment too. That said it can be an expensive hobby so in the shop we allow people to spread the cost by putting yarn back and showing them more affordable natural fibre options too. Hand dyed will always be the most expensive as the dyer has to cover their costs and time. We believe everyone deserves a fair price, the supplier, us, and the customers. But just knit what you enjoy for the joy of knitting in whatever you choose to knit it in. The Whitmore cardi is a great pattern choice too.

Thanks Jane.lovely or look and see all the fibre. I agree with knitting with one more than one strand of yarn. I don’t like particularly knitting with 2 strands 1. Because the risk of splitting the stitch and 2. The cost. I feel it bumps the cost considerably. The are different weights of yarn so if it calls for Dk then use Dk yarn and not a mixture to get to gauge. Thanks again.

What a lovely podcast Jane. Thank you for sharing Unravel with us. Like so many others I can't use fluffy yarns. Lovely look around the Maltings, thank you. I was speaking with a spinner dyer on Wednesday about a DK project and he said I could hold 2 of the light fingering 4ply together. When I said that then doubled the price of an already quite pricy garment he was a bit oh yeah I suppose it does. 😣 Do you have a chart of what are lengths for sweater quantities? I know a 4ply skein is usually 400m so assume I’d need minimum 3 skeins but don’t know about DK.

I’m an a UK size 10/12 and as a rule of thumb I know that I need about 1200mtrs for a plainish knit then up to about 1500 metres for a more complex textured knit such as cables. That’s what I factor in if I am buying yarn with no pattern to hand.
