I'm not one to cry at songs but this one brings a tear to my eye. I feel like I personally have lost a loved one. May all the fallen soldiers of the great war rest in peace
Absolutely the best, to listen to the Corries is to whisk yourself away to another world, a world where music and song can describe the happiness, sadness, laughter, adventure and any other feeling of the songs they played. The greatest story tellers in folk history!
Eric Bogle really has been able to capture the anti-war sentiment. His song, "And the band played waltzing matilda" is another fine example of his work.
God bless you Great Uncle Thomas...You are buried in Tunisia a long long way from home but you are remembered here with much honour and gratitude...and the pipes will play The Flowers Of The Forrest for you...and all of your fellows
Ronnie gets the feeling of the song over so well. Just sitting by the grave and thinking about what went before. . . and as it says in the song . . it happened again, and again, and again. Time to go back to the days of the men sending the army to war, going with them to the front line !
Very true, strange that we celebrate sending 30,000 men per day to their deaths, what a damn waste, someone should be held responsible instead of suggesting we had a lovely war!
nothing nice about war and dieing shame we cant live in piece . there is always someone out there who wants to kill. lest we forget all who fell in WW1and WW2
Definitely añd should be included in all school history classes and school discussions and public discussions of public policy. This version is beautiful and poignant and has stunning historical film clips
My great uncle was in the Black Watch, and died in this war. My grandmother named my father after him. I still have an old photo of him on my desk in front of me. It's very sad that people today have no idea of what our soldiers went through.
We are honored 😂to have you as a member of our group. Thank you for sharing your stories, which are part of Scottish , Irish and welsh and broader celtic😢 and if they wo😮acknowledge their role,English history 😊

With deep respect to those that understand the sad nature of war's apathy. My family like many of yours have always served in the militaries of the world. My great grandfather was there, as were my grandfather and his brothers, my father, and my brothers and I. Very Respectfully, from Virginia
I love The Corries and this is a brilliant version of the Green Fields of France! I love Ronnie's voice. But this has to be the best version of the song I've ever heard. I thought I had heard everything The Corries ever did as I have most of their CD's but I missed this one.
A beautiful rendition of a VERY sad and poignant song. I remember many years ago as a young man watching and listening to the Corries singing this song and it brought tears to my eyes. I have heard it again this evening and the effect is still the same.
Eric Bogle wrote this and another great song about war called "and the band played waltzing matilda". He lives in Australia but is a Scotsman who we love for his wonderful music.
This song brings me to tears every time I hear it and ievery time I think of The Corries, this is the first song that comes to mind. RIP, Roy Williamson.
I am a Falklands vet, thirty years ago I watched the Sir Gallahad get hit and fifty men loose their lives, five days later I was in the thick of battle, another twenty men lost their lives. This year because of the anniversary and the fact that I have found it just to painful, I decided for the first time in thirty years to attend a remembrance Sunday service in my local town. I decided to wear a white peace poppy instead of the traditional red one. A guy looked at me an called me a coward.
I find it very hard to cry over a song but as I write this, I feel my eyes sting with tears. Already I've lost count of how many times I've sung this unconciously in my history class. Beautiful song about such a terrible thing. I find it heartbreaking that so many young men British, French, German and others are simply bones beneath the ground because of the slaughter of World War One.
What a nice version of this classic !! Ron does an excellent job with it, and Roy's guitar is super. Can't beat the Corries for doing the best music. I'm just sorry that I came aboard so late and never had the opportunity to see them in person.
This video from The Corries’ 1987 BBC series (now on DVD) is beautiful for many reasons. The music and the images are woven together with so much pathos and meaning. The stark black background punctuated by spine-tingling images of war's horrors and Ronnie's mournful lead singing create the same mood. From today’s perspective, Roy emerging from the darkness to join Ronnie on the chorus adds an almost spiritual dimension.
it was from this DVD that i learnt the song and flower of SCOTLAND, as the song says it when on again and again why do we always send our young boys and girls to war i served in falklands bosnia kosovo and the gulf now my grandsons and granddaughters are looking at medals and thinking war is fun. thankyou
heartfelt rendition by ronnie. tears come easily for the young men who died. my own grandfather's brother was only 14 when he died (he had forged his age). let us never forget
My grandfather also forged his age to join the navy in the 1st war then joined the H.L.I in the second world war. We were lucky he came back. We can never repay them for their service & sacrifice. God bless your great uncle.
Written by Eric Bogle, a Scottish folk singer who emigrated to Australia in 1969 and then returned. He's fantastic live, if you ever get the chance, and his version (which he originally called "No Man's Land") is still the best. Nevertheless, this is still a wonderful and haunting rendition.
Know what you mean, I went there a few years ago.....The battlefields are still alive with feelings. Quite a haunting and emotional experience, Full respect to the fallen, whatever nationality.
It's Independence Day weekend here, so in a mood of patriotism, they let me sing this song at church to mark the start of WW1. They say I did okay, but I have no way of knowing. One of the guys teared up at the 1st verse, so to make it thru I kept my eyes fixed on the music. This war to end wars was the epitome of war with no end. That's what's so sad. The song captures that feeling.
I also cried when I heard this in Ireland, the Falklands and the gulf, I did not cry through fear, my only fear was how many do we have to kill and how many must we lose and for the utter futility of the whole thing.
+David Craig Utter rubbish WW1 was nothing to do with freedom, but everything to do with which Royal family would have the largest Empire. Please educate yourself.
+Mr .Creosote Were certainly not as free as I would like us to be , one day Scotland shall have total Independence , free from Westminster / London rule and in time free from our current ` bond ` with Europe , we can be friends / allies etc , but not have to obey their rules . The education system , should never have seperate schools , boys / girls , plus it could go on a 4 day week , mon-thurs , allowing Frid/Sat/Sun for religious followers to choose their own gods should they choose to do so , that way we can outlaw religion in Schools , the breeding ground for the worlds troubles , Hitler was a Catholic , but he certainly never promoted a Christain lifestyle , he tried to out do The Romans / Ceasar . but it stillwill not alter my total respect for those that sadly lost their lives in such terrible conditions , ( sadly maybe now mostly wasted lives ? ` as you just look around and the country is now multi-cultural , maybe as it should be ? , the world is for us all , not just the rich / powerful . )
David Craig As an Internationalist who is just getting ready to head for Levellers day in Burford, I can assure you freedom will never come from Nationalism. The idea of Scottish or indeed any independence is an illusion. The so called Scottish independence will not free you from market forces, Capitalism, wealth, power, class and Royalty
+Mr .Creosote , I do agree with you in that theory , sadly our world is ruled by greed / power / wealth , or simple ` bullying ` , though naturally if you work harder than your fellow worker you tend to want rewarded for your efforts , but in our country now , Lawyers / Accountants etc , often charge rate is in excess of £200-£500 + per hour where trades peoples rates generally are £30-£50 per hour , so the balance requires adjusting , safe journey sir , :-)
David Craig If you look at Capitalism, the notion of working harder for a better reward is wrong. Read George Orwell's Animal Farm and the plight of Boxer the Shire Horse
A usa group, founded in 1985. It has a branch in the UK. They have taken non-violent action to oppose all military action by the USA, the UK and the other European powers, except Russia. They state. "opposition to all war is the official position of VFP because we know that peace cannot be realized by waging war." They dislike NATO. VFP has called for the dissolution of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization as "NATO has always been a war-making institution lacking in accountability to the peoples of the nations it claims to represent." VFP states that NATO has waged wars of aggression against Yugoslavia, Iraq, Afghanistan, and Libya. VFP states that NATO maintains nuclear weapons in violation of the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty, but not Russia. They back Russia's protest that Russia is threatened by missile base construction on its borders. VFP cites Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Mubarak as examples where NATO did not address human rights abuses by dictators who supported NATO, and charges that NATO supports "Israel's expansionist agenda" So there you are.
This is one of Eric Bogle's fine old songs. He calls it "No Man's Land" and he has written a sequel some 30+ years later called "Hallowed Ground". While many know him for this song and "And The Band Played Waltzing Matilda", he actually has a vast body of work. His mid-career "Best of" collection is 5 CD's long - pretty much all outstanding. There are many of his songs on RU-vid - look a bit - enjoy!
Sur la Via Francigena j'ai croisé beaucoup de cimetières de la Première guerre mondiale. J'ai été très touchée alors cette chanson rend vraiment hommage à tous ces soldats morts.
Written by a wonderful Scotsman ' Eric Bogle' who now resides in Australia. Famous also for the Great '' The Band played Walltzing Matilda and The Aussie BBQ Song
Least We Forget...My thoughts are with the fallen and those that survived the hell on earth. Respect the souls that paid the piper and stained a foreign field with the blood of their youth..Alba Gu Brath.
@@murdochmclennan3510 the great war is history for many . However as the song says it happened again and again. Up to and including the current generation. My husband was killed in action 13 years ago but at least i found out promptly and he was flown home to rest. I try and keep my war in perspective...the casualties we miniscule compared to the casualties in ww1 and ww2. However for those left behind its never fair
All you users arguing over who's economy spent the most should wind yer neck in. This is about a great song sung by a great band written by a great folk singer (Eric Bogle) about the horrors of war and a tribute to the people who lost their life's in all conflicts. LEAST WE FORGET. Amen.
Apparently, Tony Blair said this was one of his favourite songs...................Then he got us involved that Iraq shambles. Sorry to bring a downer to this, but this is the only song that can bring a tear to my eyes, however, unlike Tony Blair, I listen to the words.
+Alan Sinclair Tony Blair is a War criminal who should be arrested on sight. He gives no public talks or makes any public appearances in the UK. SO HE KNOWS, AND HE KNOWS THAT HE KNOWS. He cannot live with himself.
Bollocks!! so Blair invaded because Saddam had WMD?? None found?? what the fuck did Saddam use on the Kurds and Marsh Arabs?? Sarin, Phosgene,Mustard Gas.Where the hell did this stuff go to?? Of course he had it..it is buried in the millions of square miles of desert.
He had had it. He had run out. He was making more. He would not let anyone see he had none, as he was trying to look like a big man on the cheap. He supposed that after 12 years of cease-fire violations, no one would do anything. All fairly simple. Whether to go to war us always a judgement call. Not enough attention is paid to the human cost, sometimes. And never by people like Saddam.
It's funny how we all say that these brave men and women all died for our freedom when in reality every war we have had results in less freedoms and more wealth for the elites. RIP all
This has to be the most emotive and beautiful song I have ever heard, it makes me think about my relatives that died in this futile and pointless slaughter
Ronnie made a comment many years ago on this song where he said something along the lines of, "People keep asking us why we sing all these anti-war songs."" His response was, Well, maybe one day some one will start listening!
great tune the fureys sing the same tune ......i love that this is sung by the two traditions in the north i wish our tribes could come together as we now face the same enemey
I have a son on law in Iraq, a grandson in West Point, a brother in law destroyed mentally in Vietnam, a father never the same after WW11 , two uncles dead in same and 4 great uncles killed in WW1. Are we free? I think not.. We are still forced into wars that we do not want and have no control over. Can't we try another way, As John Lennon sings "imagine all the people living life as one.' My family for one has done enough . I wish it would all stop!
My favourite version is by Colorado, a country group from Golspie, Scotland. Lead singer Geordie Jack does a great job with the lyrics ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-NKMsc7XwXeI.html :
