I agree, because if not for this video, people wouldn't know about it, I lived in Italy at the time (I'm Swiss and back in Switzerland now), and I remember how it was the number 1 topic on every newspaper and tv, and while I didn't even know all the details said here, I remember how upset everyone was at Schettino for being such a coward, and yes the "vada a bordo cazzo" became a meme, before memes were even a thing. Listening to the whole phone call is so satisfactory, because this bastard who costed people their lives, a lot of money, psychological damages and else, is yelled at with the uproar of a tornado. I think if De Falco could have punched him via phone, he would have. Such a shame that he was basically downgraded, thanks to him people were saved faster. Something that wasn't mentioned, not even in the Q&A, is that for the years while the ship stayed there, tourists would take selfies with it, which of course upset people very much, it was a catastrophe and people died, and these dumb fucks just took smiling pics with the half sunk ship like it was funny.

There's a reaction done for this video by a navigator and he said that decision whether to send a whole rescue operation is a tough one because just based on Schettino's response, no one on land could have known the actual situation is. It could very likely just be black out like he said. If it's the former, then De Falco would've sent a whole crew for nothing, wasting resources and could receive severe disciplinary action. Thank god he stuck to his gut feeling.

Actually, the pollution from the Costa Concordia was small. The fuel area was never hit or damaged, so there was no leak. As for the trash, that's what the nets and red floating barriers are for. I'm about to make the captain crashing two cruise liners even more bullshit for you. Schettino was actually an extremely experienced captain with decades in command of large vessels. He captained mostly large ferries but had spent plenty of years as a bridge officer on cruise liners before taking over as captain of the Concordia. He was GOOD at what he did, but the moment something went wrong, he folded like a pathetic, cowardly house of cards.

@Nr4747
@Nr4747 Год назад
He was clearly not "good" at what he did, performance-wise. "Experienced" and "good" aren't the same thing - and his performance sucked. Not only did Schettino have 3 crashes in 4 years, he was also incredible reckless even before the crash of the Costa Concordia occured. 16 knots was way too fast and his experience should have told him so instead of making him arrogant and want to get the sip "closer than ever before" to Giglio. He also should have known that his helmsman wouldn't understand him properly and have actually coordinates shouted out (as was procedure) to ensure that even with delays due to the language barrier, the ship wouldn't go off course. It was also just a really dumb idea to "eyeball" the approach instead of using vertical line navigation at the least. And that's all before going in-depth on his cowardice, indecision and dumb decisions after the incident.

A security chief is a position that has the authority to look the other way about certain things, and then that security chief somehow becomes captain? Because drugs are a part of the decadent cruise experience that attracts customers. Lots of micro adjustments are less effective for a massive ship like that one. The captain kept giving commands with different values. Also the fact that the ship takes some time to actually react to these adjustments meant that the guy had very little time to do them. So by the time maneuverer 2. was finished, the captain was issuing command 4. At least this is how I understand it. A Naval navigator officer on youtube reacted to this vid and said something along these lines. As internet historian sad, the fatal mistake was not slowing down from 16 knots. When it came to refloating the ship is the fact that the ship was next to a sea cliff, and if handled incorrectly the ship could have easily slid and fall down the cliff to the bottom where the force of the impact would have damaged the tanks containing the diesel enough for the diesel to leak out it to the sea thereby destroying the habitat, and ecosystems in that area and possibly large parts of the Mediterranean Sea leading to the deaths of hundreds of thousands of marine life, an ruining one of the main sources of income for countries around the Mediterranean as the tropical waters and marine life are one of the main tourist attractions. It would have turned the disaster itself into a devastating ecological disaster. It's why the had to pump the diesel out before the could do anything else.

Ms Estonia* and it was 26 years ago.. still no answers and many very weird stuff going on.. last year a documentary came out where they tried to investigate.. upsetting to say the least. I am going to listen to Urmas Alender(cause his voice always comes to mind when this tragedy comes to mind), a singer who perished on the ship. His songs were related to sea and water and passing away. Some good old rock songs too with less morbid tones(the band Ruja). He was and is very beloved in Estonia. But it has always been said by the survivors that he sang in the bar when it happened. Anyway. I agree. This is not the biggest maritime disaster since Titanic. Sad to see it still does not get the right investigation it deserves. And the families of the people who died or are still lost have to deal with court dealings.. On the Swedish and Estonian sides. Insane.

As an aside the captain had good faith reasons for *SOME* of his actions, for example evacuating a ship is inherently dangerous, especially on a cruise ship where you're likely to have a large number of young or elderly passengers, so if the crisis could be resolved without evacuation it would be much safer. Also the passing line where the captain mentions he needs "just a tugboat" is him trying to fulfil the advice of beaching the boat (which if they had a tugboat they could of done with an even center of gravity, making the evacuation much safer). Plus the orders he gave before the crash would of prevented a collision from happening in the first place. I don't think he deserves sympathy for any of this, he didn't even do a lot of these things correctly, for example he still should of started preparing for evacuation while trying to determine if it was necessary. Plus lot more of what he did was in bad faith; lying to the port authority, abandoning ship instead of assisting evacuation (as a premeditated action considering he changed out of his uniform), and of course the fact he decided to do the sail by salute in this manner at all.
