By far, the best video I've watched regarding Etsy fees. Short, sweet and to the point, no excess information that is not necessary. Unfortunately, the fees charged for processing payment (3% + .25) never adds up the same as indicated on Etsy's Finance (Payment Account) section. It's usually off by several cents to their advantage.
@GDHT
@GDHT 3 года назад
Thank you so much! That is weird- for me, that charge is always right on the money. Since I don't charge shipping, my fees are 1. Listing fee 2. Transaction fee 3. Etsy Payments fee and all 3 of those are correct in my Finances section.

It's not even worth it anymore for me. =( Originally, I would only make $5 profit on my products. After all the fees, I'm make under $3. Really don't understand why the fee also applies to the shipping; it's not like I'm profiting from the shipping fees. (I could raise the price, but I want to make it cheaper for my audience which are mostly students.) Anyways, thanks for this video! =)
@GDHT
@GDHT 3 года назад
Sorry to hear that!! The reason they apply it to shipping is so people don't sell a $20 item for $5 (Etsy would get a cut of that) and then charge $20 shipping (Etsy would NOT get a cut of that). when actually it should have been the other way around. The person would end up with $25, and not have to pay fees on most of it...basically gaming the system. So Etsy introduced the fee structure across everything.

@GDHT

SVGs are what I sell! I generally price mine a bit higher than that, though. ($2.50-$3.50, and bundles are about $10-$15). I tend to think those sellers are in countries where a dollar goes a bit further than here in the US. But when you sell something priced that low, it becomes a numbers game - you have to sell a TON to make money, which means you need to list a ton of products.

Thank you for making their fees easy to understand. What happens with deactivated items? Do we pay the 20c every time we reactivate the listing? Or does the initial fee of 20c cover a 4 month period excluding any time inactive? Many thanks in advance.
@GDHT
@GDHT 3 года назад
I'm not 100% sure, but I think if you deactivate, the 4 month timer is still 'running' - if you reactivate and it's within the 4 months, you don't pay again. So basically Etsy will still regard it as a listing, whether it's active or inactive. The timer doesn't stop if you deactivate, if that makes sense.
@GDHT
@GDHT 3 года назад
I found this: "Deactivating a listing doesn't affect its four month listing period. If your item expires while it's inactive, you'll be asked to renew the item for a $0.20 USD fee before you can reactivate it. There's no fee for reactivating a listing that hasn't expired."

Thanks for making this video, it is very helpful. I do have one question regarding the listing fee and quantity. As I understand you, the listing fee applies to every item of quantity, so a product listing with quantity of 10 will result in a listing fee of $2.00 (.20 x10) at the time the listing is placed. Is this correct? If so, are there any useful strategies regarding how to set quantity initially, (and when to update it) for a print on demand product?
@GDHT
@GDHT 3 года назад
That's not really the case, it's kind of hard to explain. Etsy will charge for each product you relist after a sale, so you'll get charged when you list it, not all at once. So if you listed an item with a quantity of 10, you would only be charged $0.20. If you sell one of the ten and renew the listing with quantity 9 (either manually or automatically), you'll be charged another $0.20. So you only get charged when the item is newly listed or newly relisted.

I don't have to use shipping labels, but I've heard they're cheaper if you go through Etsy - you get a group rate, I think. They basically 'are' the shipping cost as far as I can tell. Here's some info: The cost of a shipping label will depend on the origin, destination, weight, and dimensions of the package. When you purchase USPS shipping labels for your Etsy packages, you get discounted volume shipping rates: up to 30% lower than the USPS retail retail rates you would pay at the post office or elsewhere online. Aside from Etsy’s standard fees, there are no additional membership fees to use Etsy Shipping Labels. When you purchase a shipping label on Etsy.com, you can preview the cost after you add the package details. The cost of each purchased shipping label will appear separately in your Payment account. If you record a different size or weight than USPS of your parcel when purchasing labels from Etsy, USPS will refund you the difference if you overestimated or charge you if you underestimated.

Hello!! Thank you very much for your video, it helped me a lot and you explain it very well. I want to open a store with digital products. My question is ... When someone buys and downloads a digital product, how much does Etsy charge for that? I know that it charges $ 0.20 USD, for each product that one has in the store and it is renewed every 4 months, but they do not say how much they charge for each download. I also want to know, if I use their 40 free products, how much will Etsy charge me when the 4 free months are up? Will you only charge the 40 ads or will you charge double for that free month?
@GDHT
@GDHT 3 года назад
Downloads are free, meaning you can add lots of different files under the same listing - it's called a bundle usually. The customer can download them as much as they want at no extra charge. If I new person buys the listing, the fee is renewed at $0.20. After the 4 free months, a listing will expire (or you can set it to auto-renew). If you manually or auto-renew it, you'll be charged another $0.20 per listing. I don't understand what you mean by 'Will you only charge the 40 ads or will you charge double for that free month?'

@@GDHT Thank you very much for answering me so quickly, it is very kind. What I meant to say is if at the expiration of 4 months, Etsy would charge the first 40 ads that had been free anyway and instead of $8.00 would it be $16.00? I hope I have explained myself well. If I new person buys the listing, the fee is renewed at $0.20. before the 4 months? I am totally new and I want to learn well. I have watched many of your videos to learn.

I have a question about esty shipping. What the difference of adding and not adding shipping to your product? Would've been easier to add the shipping price together with the product price and put the product for free shipping. Like is the profit you receive from your products more if you add shipping or less?
@GDHT
@GDHT 2 года назад
The good thing about NOT having free shipping: shipping prices vary depending on where you send - so you can charge the customer exactly what it costs. With free shipping, you have to go with either an average or the highest shipping amount (usually overcharging some customers and undercharging others with an average...or overcharging some customers with the highest). This means your prices will be higher. BUT, Etsy encourages free shipping and will rank your items higher (so I've heard) if you do free shipping.

Hello 😊 Thank you so much for your explanation of the listing fee. It’s super helpful. I think I’ve confused myself though, lol. So, I have a friend who wants to open a shop and sell digital files. She wants to do one listing and put the quantity at 999. If the listing expires and she has 100 left, will she be charged $.20 to renew, or .20x100 she has left?? OR let’s say she sells out of all 999, will she have to pay .20x999 (199.80) to renew or just .20 listing fee??? Gosh I hope this makes sense, lol. TIA!!!
@GDHT
@GDHT 3 года назад
Etsy will only charge 1 listing fee for that, until she sells one, then if it’s renewed, she’ll pay another listing fee. That’ll happen 999 times if she sells 999, so .20x999. If she never sells even one, she’ll only get charged the $0.20 once for that first listing.
@GDHT

Is it just going to charge me on my first sale these transactions and Etsy payments fee? I mean, they are not going to charge extra fees, aside from the fees that are deducted by the sales profit? For example, shop operation fees and more.? Because the only reason I see to own Etsy money is to don't make ANY sales. The second question is if I can put the same card for payments and for billing as well. Thank you very very much again for your help! And for answering our questions fast and understandable!

Etsy will charge for each product you relist after a sale, so you'll get charged when you list it, not all at once. So if you listed an item with a quantity of 100, you would only be charged $0.20. If you sell one of the 100 and renew the listing with quantity 99 (either manually or automatically), you'll be charged another $0.20. So you only get charged when the item is newly listed or newly relisted.

Hi What about if I open up a brand new Etsy shop and I list a few things and do not sell anything for a while. Then I finally sell one item. What happens to all those listing fees on the products I listed when I first opened up? Will those listing fees be deducted once I receive income on my first sale (even months later) ?

The listing fee is charged at the moment you list them (if you use a link for 40 free listings, you won't be charged the fee for those, of course). But let's say you have 50 listings. If you make a sale while you have an outstanding balance the net sale amount will be applied to your outstanding balance. If you don't sell anything, you have to pay your outstanding balance manually by credit card, debit card, or PayPal.
