The Cost of Wearing Lolita Fashion - My Tips

Hi there!
I know many people will probably not agree with some of my tips in this video ; and that's okay! Not everything works in the same way for everyone!
But, I wanted to make this video to show what I have done in my lolita journey and how I reuse and recycle items, and make coords in a budget friendly way.
I felt like these tips were lacking in a lot of the advice I would read when responding to newbies asking about the expense of lolita. I want to tell people more than just "you can find cheap things on _____ site!".
I feel the things I mentioned are a lot more userfriendly for most people entering this fashion - and make it a lot more accessible for them.
Even though suggesting online stores at cheap prices is a good tip; I feel there are a lot of younger lolitas or people who can't afford high shipping costs that are going on ATM that need accessible items in their areas.
This is why I made this video.
I hope this could be helpful for some of you. Know that you are not alone and you do not need to own brand, or even indie taobao or bodyline. You can still be apart of the fashion by evaluating the things that make lolita, and creating it in your best way. People will be happy to help you out the best they can !
Best of luck to everyone :)

The thing I like about alternative fashion in general is the DIY aspect and I wish Lolita focused more on making stuff yourself, In the Gothic Lolita Bible there were even patterns included for sewing. Unfortunately, some people in the community only see brand as being lolita or consider handmade items "ita" which makes me sad.

I completely agree! Honestly, lolita is a very interesting type of alt fashion with how it is in it's own subculture. A lot of things that are common tropes in a lot of alt fashions have to do with going against the grain of society and especially against things like consumerism or sticking to an organized format of "how to's" and "what not's". Lolita kind of forces the idea of rule following and promotes brand worshiping and I'd even argue a good portion of the community shuts down a lot of self expression and experimentation; which imo is a huge thing that makes up alt fashion. It's a strange concept lol but you can find many types of people out there who will agree and disagree with whatever opinions on the format of the community and in turn, you'll find your people in it!

Considering it's usually near 100kusd for one outfit from a Chanel fashion show, these alt fashions are extremely cheap.

I love the idea of a 50’s dress with added trims! If you could share videos of the ones you have up-cycled I’d love to see!

I will for sure! I’m glad you liked the idea :) Maybe I’ll do a vlog part too where I go out and find a dress and show exactly how I up cycle it too!

@@PureRaee yes! I would love to see your diy / upcycled lolita clothes and actually watch you diy some ordinary skirts, dresses and blouses into lolita style.

I also used to be super worried about money and saving, I used to not even spend 10 € on a dress XD Also, if you are looking for deals and don't lack patience, I'd say LaceMarket, Vinted, (and TaoBao if you know how to buy from there) are your best friends >:D

I love these suggestions. I’ve seen a few videos on how to budget for lolita, but this video is probably the most helpful in terms of how to actually stretch your dollars. I started sewing more to make myself accessories for lolita, and now I’ve altered quite a few normie/vintage pieces to be suitable for lolita. I agree that people shouldn’t completely dismiss non lolita brand options for blouses especially (especially if you’re more fond towards casual or old school styles~).

Yeah totally! I am more of a lifestyler and wear my lolita as often as I can in my day to day. So, I love blouses and cutsews that are more accepted in work settings. I'm so happy to hear that this was helpful for you! I was worried it wasn't informative enough; but it really was just my own experiences anyways- haha! I'm happy to hear you use some of these same tips in your wardrobe as well! :) Thanks so much for commenting

I don’t have a job yet so I just save the money I get from holidays and birthdays so I can spend it on Lolita , but even though it’s money I saved for that purpose and it won’t affect me financially I still feel very sorry to see the money go lol

Oh it’s not cheeper... I just don’t do a lot of online shopping myself, and I like sewing so hand made is the way I go :p my friend keeps telling fabric is cheeper online too but I prefer physical stores😅😅
@PureRaee
@PureRaee 3 года назад
Yeah it depends on what you're making, what type of fabric you want, and where you're getting it. You can get some good fabric from thrift stores too! I make lots of accessories and things pretty cheap for lolita - but I usually deal search like crazy. However if you take into consideration your time = to money than it would probably be more expensive in that manner. Again, it depends on what you get and where you get it ! I prefer physical stores as well though theres deals online lots of the time. I just like to touch and see what I'm dealing with! haha

In my younger years I'd eat ramen which was .27cents each, faucet water for 2 weeks straight to have funds for clothing that I have to this day and will go to my last breath with them. Just a little suffering can go a long way. Also, cool it on the tech, get a cheaper phone plan at least temporarily, drive economically, etc. Oh yeah, stay in school or trade school and never stay in minimum wage. Highly skilled in 2 or 3 professions is key.
