The Costliest Second in Scrabble History

Welcome to Episode 23 of Scrabble History, a series where I break down some of the most incredible plays, epic rivalries, and amazing moments in Scrabble's rich competitive history.
Beating a grandmaster player like Dave Wiegand is hard. Beating him by a lot of points is next to impossible. In 2007, fellow top expert Jerry Lerman had to use every trick in his arsenal to try and overcome an 198 point gap in the standings, forcing Dave to use each and every last second of his game clock in an unforgettable ending!
Sometime soon, I plan to resume streaming on my Twitch channel:
/ wanderer15
I also have a weekly show on the official Scrabble Twitch channel (Tuesdays 3-5 PM ET):
/ scrabble

1 second being the difference between any win or loss is crushing. I had the fortune of being on the winning end of one of those situations vs Edley a few years ago. It didn’t win the tournament on the spot but it made the difference in the end.

On the one hand, we fans of the channel tend to want to provide supportive comments like "great video," but we seem to also tend to add "You know *given the fact that this is Scrabble content* it's actually interesting and exciting." I don't think we need to see it that way. Scrabble can be as exciting as any other interest. It's a fallacy we fall into to presume something will be boring or slow. Different things interest and excite different people at different times. There's no specific reason why Scrabble should be less exciting than soccer World Cup or a Taylor Swift concert or anything else. It's a bias, and I don't share it. This was a very intense vid, good work.

I would say it's hard to present Scrabble in an engaging way compared to other games, though. There's 0 movement and other sparkly shiny things that humans get hooked to.
@escapedlunatic27

I think it's more the fact that not many people who come across this video/this channel in general would already be Scrabble fans. It's (relatively) easy to make a video which will appeal to people who are already fans of the subject matter - but much harder to make one which will engage new fans. I recall one comment on another channel "I've never done a jigsaw in my adult life, but I've just watched four hours of videos of the World Jigsaw Puzzle Championship". There is serious skill in getting people to watch a video on a subject that they'd never have expected they would be interested in.

I have not watched much if any live coverage of Scrabble tourneys but I would say that if someone like Will -- both knowledgeable and well-spoken -- were to commentate, I could see a championship actually being popular tv amongst us mere mortals.
@wanderer15

Definitely appreciate these comments (and thank you) - but the reality is, most people with any experience with Scrabble see it as a parlor game on par with Sorry!, Connect Four, etc. that simply lack the same drama and strategic depth, and it's those people I have in mind with each video I make.

Did Dave make a strategic error by trying to use up tiles in the final game, rather than just playing for his best score? As John Madden said, "All a prevent defense does is prevent you from winning."
@Cloiss_
@Cloiss_ 3 месяца назад
I was thinking the same - in Mack Meller's ongoing series against BestBot, an AI-powered Scrabble bot, the AI has been favoring moves that humans would be too scared to make when far ahead that play into likely outcomes to further your lead rather than playing scared to try to hold onto it.
@wanderer15
@wanderer15 3 месяца назад
I go back and forth on this. I think *some* adjustment is warranted, and there's also major confirmation bias at play when someone adjusts as Dave did and has it seemingly backfire. But for myself, I'd only start changing my strategy closer to the end of the game, when I know what type of game it's going to be down the stretch. (Close game, where I can sacrifice winning chances to ensure at most a narrow loss? Comfortable win for me? etc.)

1:06 wait a minute, if Dave wins even a single game out of 4, doesn't that put him at 13 wins with Jerry only ever being able to reach 12? And also, why does he need to win by so much spread if they're both at +1000?

It's a very fair question! Obviously, given the extremely low frequency of Dave's 200+ point losses, changing absolutely nothing would've been a solid approach. I think there is some logic to it, but in general, using up more tiles creates greater variance in quality of draws / likelier chances of terrible draws.

A lot of real words are not in the dictionary and so they are not considered valid. STEAKHOUSE is a shocking example I recently learned about - it's valid in the international dictionary, but not in the North American one, and it's definitely a word... There's a bunch of oddities of this type, but ultimately it's the nature of the game - at a competitive level, you obey the dictionary so that you don't have to get in arbitrary disputes over whether a word is 'valid enough'. Perhaps the lexicographers will catch LEADPIPE and add it in an upcoming update.
