This is my absolute favorite show and I am obsessed with how knowable you are! Green is incredible in her role, and her empathy is wonderful. I write gaslight fantasy, and clothing is such an important part of my research so thank you!
@@Costume_CO it's historical fantasy. A close cousin to steampunk, but more focused on the social aspects and less on machines or science. Penny Dreadful is, by its very nature both neo-Victorian and Neo-Gothic.
Autism Home Therapy TV Thank you so much. I will have Crimson Peak done in the next few days. if you like Penny Dreadful, I think you will enjoy it. it's a Gothic romantic ghost story. :)
Oh yes! Saw that at the cinema! I loved that movie.... How wonderful! I have subscribed so I will watch that too when you upload it :) thank you again x
@@Costume_CO I wish they could've gone on longer as there were so many questions left unanswered. We had finally been given a taste, more like a tease really, of the deeper backstories and origins only to be kept in the dark of certain character arcs because they had to end the show so abruptly 😭
I enjoyed delving into the details of Vanessa's costumes. We only see such decoration in couture these days. I think it would also be interesting to speak more to the symbolism or the reasons for the choices the designer made to support each character's story. For example, the fact that Vanessa wears so much black. I don't think it's simply because this is a "gothic" series. (Spoiler alert) I assumed it's because Vanessa is mourning the death of her mother. Mourning etiquette was an integral part of Victorian culture and she would have been in deep mourning for a year (I believe all black) and then another state of mourning for another where she could wear other colors with black.
+meowy Thanks so much for the comment! Yes, of course that makes sense. I will also have to check the script but I believe that the designer mentioned that black was a very fashionable colour at the time and so chose it for Vanessa, being a very fashionable dresser.
I believe Vanessa wore black and primarily dark colors because she is a person attuned with mysticism and dark forces whose mood is frequently brooding or somber. Mina was usually shown wearing white; I felt that was a choice to show Vanessa and Mina as opposite sides of the coin, different yet related, and also express the perception among their families that Mina is the "good" one and Vanessa is the "bad" one. In the scene where Vanessa helps Victor shop for clothes for Lily, Vanessa recommends that a white dress will be flattering on a blonde. Victor remarks that he never sees Vanessa wear white; she smiles and says, in a wry sort of way "it's not my color." I think in this remark she is implying that the associations of the color white- lightness and purity- are not in keeping with her brooding temperament and attraction to the dark side of life. If you look at her origin story episode, 'closer than sisters' in season one that explores her youth and relationship with Peter and Mina, Vanessa wears lighter colors and a lot of blue in those scenes, but after her demonic possession following her betrayal of Mina, Vanessa's clothing palette goes dark and remains that way.
+moonlily1 oh yeah, absolutely. I think it's been a year + since I did this video, but the costume designer stated that she also chose this colour because it was highly fashionable for the time.
Costume Cinematografico Me too. I could see that Series 3 was running out of ideas - but I would still have preferred if the whole team took a break and regrouped after a couple of years with new stories. In theory viewing figures weren't good but somehow I am not convinced... It was good while it lasted!
Now I have to figure out how to make this style finding applique's and finding sutash trims is impossable the jacket/coat style is very like a Gothic brand called Raven as far as I can tell its no longer traiding. One thing to note you need a long torso and legs to make this look its best. As with most things unfortunatly. I am finding these videos very informative for my costume reserch and costume ideas thank you.
Thanks Lorri. You can sometimes find these items in shops that sell drapery and upholstry fabrics. Also Etsy or eBay will sometimes offer up these items too. 😁
Unfortunately the ending.....is dreadful. The producers tried to lie and say it was always only going to be 3 seasons..But Eva Green spilt the beans and said she was " unexpectedly available" for Mrs Peregrines home for extraordinary children..Best series on TV...and they wrecked it. Fans were ropable.
It’s a shame the payoffs of this series never quite reached the heights promised by the exciting setups and great characters, but at least it was always more underwhelming than outright bad, and it has some of the best single episodes of television that I’ve seen, with fantastic performances throughout. It’s one of the underrated gems on Netflix and it’s neat to see attention given to the gorgeous costumes.
I liked Penny Dreadful, but I honestly think that Penny Dreadful: City of Angels was a more cohesive and better executed show, it's a shame it got cancelled after only one season.
Do we watch the same exact movies and TV shows? I swear we must have the same exact taste which is a good one! Lol Jesus Christ you are so good at this! I think I found my new binge-watching RU-vid channel! LOL I do have a question... what got you get into this? And please tell me that your a designer at least because with all your knowledge and talent you could be amazing! Obviously I can just tell your super into vintage clothing, what is your favorite era for attire? Also the lace detailings are to die for! I love how they put black lace over anything cream colored, it just makes it stand out so beautifully it makes me melt! LOL it's a shame you can't find clothing made this well with attention to detail in every aspect anymore! Were you just as pissed as I was when they cut off the show only at season 3? I understand why they did it because supposedly that's how the story was supposed to end since Vanessa dies but I think they could have made a season four at least because all the other characters were just as interesting even though Vanessa was my favorite obviously! LOL
Hi there! Thank you for such a lovely comment! Well, I studied theatre and used to work in theatre and TV and for family reasons I had to leave. I wanted to start the channel after watching GOTs and saw that no one on RU-vid was really analyzing the costumes (there is Tyranny of Style, Clothes on Film and Frock Flicks in print). Anyhoo, I'm so glad we have the same taste in shows and fashion! I guess my favourite is turn of the century and early 1800s like Jane Austen.
Oh, yes, I think that ended the show abruptly. I don't believe that it was only meant to be 3 seasons because they had introduced new characters in season like Dr. Jeckyl just to have it all end suddenly. Now I did read that Eva Green only wanted to do 3 seasons but they could have carried on without her I suppose.
