I really like the idea that shipping containers especially if they're brightly colored. Storage for the 2nd floor and craft/office/yoga/community for 1st floor since it will be used more and can be a storm shelter.😊

I’m so excited and have been interested in buying a tiny home in the next couple of years, when my teenager goes to college.

Awesome! It’s a fun process! I remember watching all the shows and sketching out my designs, enjoying the challenge of trying to get as much as I could into the space and still have it flow well. It’s an exciting journey!

Great ideas with the comm. center, fun. The trees are so pretty. The thing about shipping containers I've heard is managing condensation just don't forget to add what you need for that like an air exchange or whole house type fan....
@gotinybefree
@gotinybefree 2 месяца назад
Yes metal shipping containers will “sweat” with condensation if not insulated correctly. We will insulate them with spray foam insulation and the units will be climate controlled with a mini split for further temperature & humidity control

Yes storage units! Have had this idea under wraps for a while, they’ll make perfect storage units (4 to 8 per container). I should have asked people to comment on what size space they would need, ie, 5x5 or 5x10…
@reynetallents
@reynetallents 2 месяца назад
@@gotinybefreeI would think 5x10, because older people don't want to pile or reach too high. Also, with that much floor space, one could store a Motorcycle indoors 😉

It’s something that will probably develop and change over time as we see what residents interests (and skills!) are and what people want to sell or trade. I really like the idea of using one of them as like a rotating wellness clinic or something; perhaps a chiropractor could announce available appts there on a Monday to the community; a masseuse Tuesday; a naturopath doctor weds; an acupuncturist Thursday; maybe a physical therapist on Friday… possibilities are endless! :)

You should put at least two bathrooms if you are going to have people work or do any activity there.
@justjen4125
@justjen4125 2 месяца назад
True, that's very realistic. Plus, if one is not working for whatever reason you have a back-up.

Keep in mind the tiny homes are just a short walk away. We’re trying to add as much value as we can but still keeping costs as low as we can, removing unnecessary costs to be able to do all these things. Each container is less than 300sf of usable space as well so adding bathrooms would take up a good portion of that space that might have a better use. We’re always looking for the highest and best use of space

I was wondering if the clubhouse building had a basement but now I wonder if the containers would be good storm shelters for tornados on the property
@francesn33
@francesn33 2 месяца назад
Great idea!!! HANS what are your thoughts???
@gotinybefree
@gotinybefree 2 месяца назад
You don’t usually find basements in Alabama because the clay can expand and contract so much it cracks them and makes them leak. I can look into that; the containers are obviously very strong and will be bolted into piers but they will have glass windows so we may just need some hurricane shutters like they have in Florida. I can look into that for those who don’t want to drive 2 miles flown the road to the large community safe rooms
@donnamcbrier293
@donnamcbrier293 2 месяца назад
Honestly tornados are a big concern, I think promoting your own shelter would be a major plus

Maybe consider switching the storage to the top and keeping the multi-purpose rooms at the bottom. Since these rooms will be utilized more often than storage. I doubt there will be heavy furniture to haul upstairs anyway, just overflow items. As we get older, it’s harder and painful to climb stairs, or keep it all one level. This way, it will be more welcoming coming in and out at the first level. Most homes will already have a lake view from their home’s windows and from all angles walking around the property.
@christinavarnum5521

Just remember not all will be able to do stairs so if the community area is on the second floor I hope you will provide a lift.

The property sits up about 20 feet above the field next to us and the land to the south. Plus the homes are 3 feet above the ground (on wheels) and there’s an overflow culvert a several feet down from the top of basin edge

I’m a retired home care/ hospice nurse that have much experience with geriatric population. Having the craft / yoga… rooms upstairs will not allow many of your residents to use them as they get older. Those spaces you are planning sound great and can improve quality of life so much!!! Maybe an elevator? Go Hans!!!

Spaces are TOO CLOSE! No room for two cars nor garden nor storage....Im looking at it and I cant breath!!!! You need 3 cars spaces side by side by the entrance and 2 cars spaces side by side behind the house. This is space idea not that people will park that many cars. Surely many will have at least two cars or one and a visitor. Noted this on another video but no answer. Thanks!
@gotinybefree
@gotinybefree 2 месяца назад
Keep in mind this is more or less a tiny home retirement community. A lot of tiny housers embrace the concept of minimalism and embrace the aspects of community. We will have some additional parking on the property, but this property was designed to meet this niche with great views of the lake and forest and lots of amenities. Hope that helps!
@susanbeals7597
@susanbeals7597 2 месяца назад
I can see needing more space for parking if this was a community of regular sized homes, but it's not. In fact, this community will primarily be 24 foot long and smaller tiny homes, typically occupied by 1 person or a couple, and mostly retirees. I know my husband and I only needed a 2nd car because we both worked, and now that I'm single, 1 car is more than enough. Since there will be some guest parking, 1 parking space at each home sounds sufficient.
@jm-bv1wh
@jm-bv1wh 2 месяца назад
@@susanbeals7597 It's not about cars. A primary hobby/pastime activity for retired people is gardening, so the lack of space for a personal garden is a major shortcoming. And a community garden is not the same as one's own garden. I live in a neighborhood full of retired people, and their personal gardens are one of the things that keep them going.
@isabellayogurte2308
@isabellayogurte2308 2 месяца назад
@gotinybefree i was concerned of using cars for extra space...im going to need space for gardening my own food, an inflatable hot tub and space for a good deck. A retiree needs to have hobbies around the home...even if its tiny. Otherwise is more like a trailer park...the trailer and one parking space...not attractive....trust someone understands my point. Thank you much!
