I don't understand the need to distort couples. In the film The Illusionist which is inspired by the mayerling incident, Duchess Sophie despises Prince Leopold and wants to marry her childhood crush who was a commoner, in real life baroness mary vetsera was in love with prince Rudolf, she was willing to die by him. resolved to distort. In the book the count he loved Haydee and ends with her.

I would love it if someone like HBO or netflix would do a 10 episode proper adaptation of the book. It's my all time favourite book. No movie has really ever done it justice as the story is far too long for just one movie even if it was 4hrs long. This is one of the better adaptations I've seen though.
@alanfoster6589
@alanfoster6589 3 года назад
@@Welsh_Dragon756 Seen most of them. My favorite is still the 1934 version with Robert Donat...though it still has the tacked-on Hollywood happy ending. A proper mini-series is definitely long overdue. The French series is impressive, but as much as I appreciate Gerard Depardeu's acting, it's impossible to see him as Dantes/the Count. The Russian mini-series is lugubrious.

I know right! Every version they film has him end up with Mercede and totally downplays Haydee who in the book is one of the coolest characters! Saying he's done with this revenge stuff and totally over Mercedez and sailing off into the distance with Haydee is waaaaaaay more of a cooler ending!

@@alanfoster6589 I have just finished watching the French mini series. I really enjoyed it for the most part and depardieu wasn't bad at all. He's the only person to ever leave a prison that serves watered down sloppy soup and is fatter than he went in though 🤣🤣 the ending disappointed me though as it felt really tacked on. Having him go back to Mercedes after everything is just ridiculous. The 2 of them didn't even seem to show much affection between each other throughout it and because they rushed through the beginning they never were really shown as being in love at all. I just thought he'd end up with the woman who they used to replace most of haydee's role, as her character was mostly dropped again until the end. All round though I did like it as it really does go a lot deeper into his revenge plot than most adaptations.

The Prisoner of Château d'If (Узник замка Иф) is the best version. Edmond always remembered and loved exactly the TWO MERCEDES (Mercedes Herrera and Haydee), whom he met in his youth, not the Countess of Morcef. Likewise, Mercedes loved the sailor EDMOND DANTES, not the Count of Monte Cristo. Time and distance have changed them a lot, they will never be the same as they knew each other in the past. Renewing Edmond's relationship with Mercedes would simply be impossible. You cannot enter the same river twice. After all, the past is the past.

This is based on a true story of a black Frenchman. He was a war hero, and thrown into prison. His son wrote this story, and most of his stories that he wrote were based on his father.
