The Countdown clock in the very first set, featured in (at least) the very first two episodes of the programme on 2nd and 3rd November 1982 respectively. Both episodes can be seen here:

Notably, the clock was blank at this point but received markings a week later, which it has retained to this day.

Does it bug anyone else that the beat doesn’t synchronise with the seconds? 64 beats to fit 30 seconds. They should have made it 120 bpm instead so it would be 2 beats per second. But then you would only have 15 bars instead of 16 which would be a bit odd too.

Countdown was originally shown in the Yorkshire Television region as “Calendar Countdown”, and initially they were given 45 seconds. However, YTV decided to decrease it to 30 seconds for Calendar Countdown, though I guess when they offered it to Channel 4 they stuck with 30 seconds instead of 45. The clock also used to take a full 30 seconds to return to the top, but it only takes a couple of seconds nowadays
