I've travelled to Malta and joined a tour that explained a lot about this order. There's still a "hospital" in Malta that, during the crusades, was considered one of the most modern in the world. The Order had vital importance in assisting crusaders and treating them. Their history is fascinating

In the campaign from Age of Empires 3 I think you get to play as this order. At least it's called the Knights of Saint John and they're based in Malta.

I'm a bit confused at 3:25, as the military vehicle appears to be carrying soldiers with Italian uniforms during a parade in Rome, showing an Italian licence plate (EI, meaning Esercito Italiano, Italian Army) and the Knights Of Malta's logo at the same time. Cool.

On my travels I noticed that ambulances in Canada often seem to have an affiliation with " the Society of St. John". I once found myself reading an old First Aid manual from them. It seems they have a wide reach, and do good work. They have a really beautiful embassy in Paris! ( from the outside anyway, that' as much as I saw )

My father has been a Knight of Malta for several years now and I honestly knew very little about the Order until I watch this video which peaked my interest in the subject. Great video, awesome channels (this and Wendover Productions).

The Vatican does NOT have Permanent Observer Status with the UN. While Vatican City State is its own country, it is The Holy See that has Permanent Observer Status. That is, the Catholic Church, not the territory which governs the Church Universal. The same is true of the USA. If you watch the footage of Pope Francis addressing both houses of Congress recently. The sergeant at arms announced him thus: "Mister Speaker, the Pope of the Holy See"

Interesting video but I'd like to add some more info. They had a presence in Syria until 1271. After they lost Rhodes in 1523, they spent 7 years in Rome until they finally accepted to come to Malta in 1530. They were also given a small port area in Libya but that didn't last long. In 1798 Napoleon kicked them out. They had the chance to come back to Malta but the Maltese didn't want them so the British took over. The Order also got split up in two. The Russian branch which is seen by some as being illegitimate, and the regular Order of Malta. The member list is no secret and right now they have no acting Grand Master. They're also the oldest organization ever. Source: I'm a Maltese history buff.

Great look at a fascinating body. To be extremely technical, the Order is a sovereign international subject with legal personality, rather than a country, as such. A way of describing something that no one is really entirely sure how to describe! :-)

The flag looks strangely danish

It's hospitaller work and assets (buildings) are sovereign. It is subject to the Vatican as a religious Order. Its Knights of Justice are fully vowed monks (obedience, poverty, chastity). It is these Knights, among all the other "ranks" of the SMOM, who are the modern descendants of the fighting warrior Knights of St. John, (aka Knights Hospitaller, Order of Rhodes, Order of Malta).
