Let this video serve as proof that if you want something bad enough, you can make it a reality. This video is almost entirely the result of two persistent commenters who refused to stop going on about how great The Cranberries are. We, of course, were familiar with all of their hits, but we needed to deep dive to see what all the fuss was about.
****
The Cranberries were an Irish rock band formed in Limerick, Ireland. Originally named the Cranberry Saw Us, the band were formed in 1989 by lead singer Niall Quinn, guitarist Noel Hogan, bassist Mike Hogan, and drummer Fergal Lawler. Quinn was replaced as lead singer by Dolores O'Riordan in 1990, and they changed their name to the Cranberries. The band classified themselves as an alternative rock group, but incorporated aspects of indie rock, jangle pop, folk rock, post-punk, and pop rock into their sound.
The Cranberries rose to international fame in the 1990s with their debut album, Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can't We?, which became a commercial success. Some of the band's hit singles include "Dreams" (1992), "Linger" (1993), "Zombie" (1994), and "Salvation" (1996). Five of the band's albums reached the Top 20 on the Billboard 200 chart, and eight of their singles reached the Top 20 on the Modern Rock Tracks chart.
In early 2009, after a six-year hiatus, the Cranberries reunited and began a North American tour followed by shows in Latin America and Europe. The band's sixth studio album, Roses, was released in February 2012, and its seventh, Something Else, followed in April 2017. On 15 January 2018, lead singer Dolores O'Riordan was found dead of drowning in a London hotel room. The Cranberries confirmed in September 2018 that they would not continue as a band; their final album, In the End, was released in April 2019 and they disbanded afterward.
The Cranberries ranks as one of the best-selling alternative acts of the 1990s, having sold nearly 50 million albums worldwide as of 2019. They have received an MTV Europe Music Award, a World Music Award, an International Group nomination at the Brit Awards, a Juno nomination, a Juno Award win, an Ivor Novello Award for International Achievement, and a BMI Award with a Special Citation of Achievement. The band's final album, In the End, earned them a Grammy nomination for Best Rock Album. With the video for their song "Zombie", the Cranberries became the first Irish band to reach one billion views on RU-vid.
****
Thanks for watching. Let us know in the comments what you think of The Cranberries and how you rank their albums.
Next week: The Black Crowes
After that: Talk Talk, ELO, George Harrison

Going through the Cranberries this week, I've come to a realization on them: they are a perfect 3.5 band. Literally every album they've done, in my eyes, is a solid 3.5. One of the most consistent bands I've ever heard, if only that consistency ever went to "great" instead of "pretty good." Maybe they'll grow on me, I do love Dolores' voice. She reminds me of Sinead O'Connor in that she's Irish and I'm unimaginative. Rest in Peace.

1. Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can't We? (1993) 4/5 2. No Need To Argue (1994) 4/5 3. To The Faithful Departed (1996) 3.5/5 4. Wake Up And Smell The Coffee (2001) 3.5/5 5. Bury The Hatchet (1999) 3/5 6. Roses (2012) 3/5 7. Something Else (2017) 3/5 8. In The End (2019) 2.5/5 CHRONOLOGICAL ORDER: 4.0 Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can't We? (1993) 4.0 No Need To Argue (1994) 3.5 To The Faithful Departed (1996) 3.0 Bury The Hatchet (1999) 3.5 Wake Up And Smell The Coffee (2001) 3.0 Roses (2012) 3.0 Something Else (2017) 2.5 In The End (2019) Coming into the week I didn't know much about The Cranberries besides their half-dozen U.S. radio hits. I'm struck by how consistently good they were. I'm not in love with every song but there also aren't many I just plain dislike. Like many other bands, their peaks are concentrated early in their career and those are the records I'd be most likely to seek out again. While none of their LPs screamed "classic!" at me I think there are some solid tunes on almost all of them. There were even a few tracks I'd never heard before, like "Bosnia" and "No Need To Argue," that snuck up on me and blew me away. Lyrically, they're kind of plain and straightforward but Delores O'Riordan's voice (may she rest in peace) is so unique it goes a long way toward making up for it. The Cranberries' music kept growing on me all week- in just the last 48 hours some of my ratings went up a half star. They wouldn't get near my "top artists" list but I've realized I'm one of the people who's been overlooking this band. MY RATING SYSTEM: 5.0 = major classic 4.5 = minor classic 4.0 = great 3.5 = very good 3.0 = good 2.5 = fair 2.0 = poor 1.5 = awful 1.0 = historically awful I don't go below 1 star because once I'm in the realm of the truly terrible I don't care to differentiate anymore. Anything I rate 3.5 stars or higher is an album I'm enthusiastic about and would likely revisit at some point.

On Saturday, I actually drove past the the graveyard where Dolores is buried ( spent the weekend in Limerick ). I quite like the band. Don't think they ever made a " classic ", but even their worst albums have at least some decent songs on them.

It’s really one of those bands where, to me, a compilation takes care of it. I agree wholeheartedly with you guys that they never empathized their strongest point enough, which to me is melodic (power)pop with a slight edge and a folky (Irish) touch, so I happen to be on the Salvation and I Can’t Be With You-side of things. A band with an identity crisis whose biggest successes also limited their longevity, and that’s not me trying to be disrespectful towards the band (and the late Dolores in particular), because when they hit the sweet spot they did it convincingly. I used to have No Need To Argue back in the day, but don’t think I’ve ever played through it once; like the band, trying to be everything at once and ending up a bit neither fish nor flesh. Again: Compilation-band for me. I adjusted my want-to-see list slightly: The Cure Van Der Graaf Generator Gentle Giant Soft Machine Caravan Moody Blues 10CC Golden Earring Can Jethro Tull Porcupine Tree/Steven Wilson Manfred Mann’s Earth Band Uriah Heep Deep Purple reboot Budgie Alice Cooper Metallica (forgot if you guys did that) Paul McCartney/Wings reboot Van Morrison Clapton? Zappa (hehe) U2 And I don’t know if any of you is into metal… Megadeth Slayer Anthrax Meshuggah Opeth Between The Buried And Me

Just been on a Cranberries kick and so good to hear your thoughts. I was amazed by the quality of their final record considering how it was made… my list: Everybody Else 4/5 - moody like early R.E.M - like a comfort blanket No Need To Argue 4/5 - mostly great In The End 4/5 - it’s a very consistent listen, nothing terrible here Something Else 4/5 - I could have done without the new songs, love the production on this record Wake Up and Smell 3/5 - more consistent than the ones below but weak overall Bury The Hatchet 2.5/5 - has a few pretty good songs Faithful Departed 2.5/5 - but Free to Decide is GREAT Roses 2/5 - but Tomorrow is GREAT Just to add that many of their bonus tracks etc are superior to album tracks - a few of the Faithful tracks in particular

I was looking forward to this discography but was I ever disappointed. I knew the first two albums pretty well before this. My mom listened to them in the 90s and I enjoyed their hits a lot. Didn't really listen to them much beyond that and I had higher expectations for some reason. I agree with a lot of what all of you said overall. The lyrics really take me out of things a lot (I had the same thought about bad high school poetry) and a lot of later stuff is just such a slog to get through. Ranking most of the albums was difficult really because so much just did not stick with me at all. I don't think you were too hard on them, I pretty well felt the same. 8. Roses - 2 (zzzzzzzzz I listened to this twice and remember nothing from it at all. Sorta forgot I was listening to music at points) 7. Something Else - 2.5 (it's never bad but I just don't see the point of it. The originals were probably the best thing about it. Surprisingly my 10 year old daughter loved "The Glory".) 6. Wake Up and Smell the Coffee - 2.5 (I don't even have much to say about this one. Not bad, but not great) 5. In The End - 3 (I think this was a lot better than expected, it was definitely a good way to end their career). 4. To The Faithful Departed - 3 (I do like the singles on this one, but then it just goes on too long after that. I agree, "I Just Shot John Lennon" is not good. ) 3. Bury the Hatchet - 3 (I really hate "Copycat". It started out jangle-ly and piqued my interest at first and then immediately turned to crap. It really does derail the album from there. I do like "Promises" a lot) 2. Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can't We? - 3.5 (There is a lot I like on this one, I like the atmosphere and I love "Linger" but it's still missing something to make it great) 1. No Need To Argue - 3.5 (I like this one slightly better than the debut as an album even though I would say "Linger" is my favourite song by them. I do think that I could easily go back and forth on which one is my favourite though.)

Prior to this exercise I was familiar with their hits and the first two albums. Listening to the complete discography was a bit of a let-down. Nothing terribly bad, but nothing great, either. 1. To The Faithful Departed (4 stars out of 5) Started strong, I thought it could be a five star album, but it dipped precipitously on the back half. 2. Something Else (3.5) I don't know why this album exists. I don't like these versions better than the originals, but this is their best collection of songs. 3. Everybody Else is Doing It, So Why Can't We? (3.5) Strong debut. Expected more from them. 4. In the End (3.5) Better than I expected. I generally hate posthumous releases, but this one held up. 5. Bury the Hatchet (3) - Started strong, then faded. 6. No Need to Argue (3) Same as above. 7. Wake Up and Smell the Coffee (3) Cover art is the best part of this album. 8. Roses (3) Meh Overall, kind of disappointing. They were a good, steady band, but far from great.

Since so many people had copies of the first two albums back then I was able to get ahold of them from my dad. I'm especially familiar with the second record which I think is their best or at least my favorite. Very solid first and second albums but I agree that moving on from there the songs became less interesting or not what I wanted from them. They didn't live up to the promise of the first two so I don't hold them in high regard despite really connecting with them at one point.

My first thought was, “The Cranberries had eight albums?” I never listened past the third album and I don’t even remember that one. I always thought the first album was bland other than the two excellent singles. No Need to Argue, however, is a really good album. I think I’d even give it a strong 4 stars. Zombie actually sticks out too much. I think the deep cuts are so much stronger than the debut. It’s a fully fleshed out album in my opinion. In high school I was head over heels for one of my friends (never went further than that unfortunately) who sang and played guitar. She was immensely talented. She always played Dreaming My Dreams and No Need to Argue. Melted me every time. Maybe that’s where the 4 stars comes from. Yeah, not really sure why you guys did this one. Ha. ✌🏻

That guy complaining about the guitar tones on bury the hatchet doesnt know what the hell he's talking about , he should listen to more music. that is reflected also in the fact that he says no need to argue sounds good. actually half of no need to argue is lo-fi since it only contains rough demos made in new york on the fly. half the album is demo-quality sonic wise. they never re-recorded the new york recordings and released the demos along with the other polished professional recorded tracks in other parts of the world. so go listen to more music my man

Obviously I disagree on almost everything you have said, although I assume that each of us has our tastes and preferences. Although I honestly believe that some scores have been influenced by the conversations that we have had these last few months. The Cranberries may not be the most talented musicians of the 90s, and a lot of people dislike Dolores's voice. I also understand that you consider The Cranberries a musically simple band, whose lyrics are pretty bad. The Cranberries is what it is, an indie band formed in the poorest Ireland, 400 kms from Dublin (U2), and whose economy depended on it. farming. A band influenced by post-punk (which you haven't mentioned) from bands like Echo And The Bunnymen, and to a lesser extent by The Smiths. The bass player was 16 years old in 1989, and the rest were 18 years old, they were the perfect example of an old school indie band that could hardly sell beyond Limerick. The first EP was not even in vinyl format, but there were 300 cassettes produced practically manually through the amateur label Xeric Records, which recorded with those Sony devices that all of us had at some point in the 90s. Vocalist Niall Quinn left the band in 1990, honestly he was a lousy vocalist, you can see it because there are 3 songs on YT by that band called The Cranberry Saw Us. That tiny band from Ireland's fourth city, an island still very poor in the early 1990s, was doomed. It is evident that if they had not continued with Quinn or if they had found another vocalist other than Dolores, that band had failed. Even with all the shortcomings you have mentioned, the truth is that The Cranberries have created a legacy. You may or may not like the band, you may or may not like Dolores, or you may not even care at all, but the reality is that 22 years after their last successful album (Bury The Hatchet), that band continues to create new fans in all the world. And that is neither by popularity nor by chance, it is because those listeners really feel a special connection with that music. My father died in 2019, and The Cranberries have always been my favorite band since childhood. However I had never bought any albums. In 2003, after releasing a very weak album, the band dissolved, and therefore it was difficult for me to create a real bond with the band, since in adolescence that band that I liked no longer existed. Then when they got together in 2009 everything had changed, the music had changed. That said, your scores for No Need To Argue and Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Cant't We? Seem unreal to me. Although I have rated NNTA 4.5 / 5 because BTH is an album whose singles marked me deeply during childhood, I think both albums are classics from the 90's. In my opinion both could be 5/5, and it is absurd to underestimate them as two of you have done. I would also like to put Fee Fi Fo in context, as it has received quite a bit of hate in this video. That song, which for me is Top3 on the album, is an autobiographical song, since Dolores normally wrote about events related to her or the band (Noel also wrote some lyrics). For example, Cordell was the band's manager, who died in 1994 after trusting them when they were only 18 years old. Joe was Dolores's grandfather. And, as I was telling you, in Fee Fi Fo he was possibly questioning her neighbor who abused her from the age of 8 to 12. The Icicle Melts is about the murder of 2-year-old James Bulger, Zombie we all know what it's about. I do not dispute that some lyrics by Dolores could be too direct, you can consider them bad, as you want. But it is evident that Dolores did not care about the consequences of those lyrics, if she annoyed or if she generated a certain animosity. I admit that the lyrics of I Just Shot John Lennon are not very accurate, although I also think that the melody is quite good. Well, I have more to say, but I don't want this to become an infinite text. So I'm going to stop momentarily and rate the band of my life, the band that was indispensable during the mourning for my father. The band whose vocalist is the artist that I admire and appreciate the most. 8. Wake Up And Smell The Coffee. 3/5 7. Roses. 3.5 / 5 6. Something Else. 3.5 / 5 5. In The End. 4/5 4. To The Faithfull Departed. 4/5 3. No Need To Argue. 4.5 / 5 2. Bury The Hatchet. 5/5 1. Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Cant't We. 5/5

Yeah, I only know the first 3 albums well (Bury the Hatchet I think I’ve only listened to once so far) and I have pretty much nothing to add you guys didn’t already say as far as their strengths and weaknesses, so I imagine I’d pretty much agree about the rest of the catalog. The first two are at 3-1/2 and Departed is at 3 for me. I disagree about Lucy from Candlebox though - totally half assed songwriting and playing on that, and it’s probably at around lowish 2 stars for me. Although it’s nice that Kevin Martin significantly toned down the tiresome “eeehh yeah” sort of vocal inflections that bugged me on the debut, at least there were a few more memorable hooks on that one, and it was a half decent attempt at Pearl Jam’s Ten sound wise.

I’m with Jason this time from worst to best. Can’t stand Bury The Hatchet, it’s really bad. Their acoustic album ”Something Else” is quite good, and their best album without a doubt is “No Need To Argue”, it’s their masterpiece. Definitely, as much as I love their first two albums, they never recreated their magic again 😢. I loved them again on “Something Else”, but it’s the same songs rearranged. As for Salvation, while the lyrics are cringe inducing, it’s quite a good song to listen to when you’ve had too many beers at the bar. I’ve had some great memories to that song, as well as “Free To Decide”. I’ve to confess I’m gonna listen to “In the end” for the first time after watching this video, I lost faith since “Bury…”.

"Ode to My Family" is Beautiful. I don't like Linger and Zombie and Dreams (songs) nearly as much. Part I / on why Joe's tastes are not as good as Jason's. Joe told me, and I have a few more upcoming comments you can all ignore or laugh at me for. We don't laugh at geniuses like Joe: I think Joe is right sometimes of course - he recognizes Todd Rundgren's dreck along with his great ballads . He know Hendrix was great for his time and likes After the Goldrush by Neil Young. But he loves so much schlock and even arty Ben Fold Fives "You have made me smile again; in fact I may be sore from it- it's been awhile" sang Ben. Sure it's clever but every song is chock full of that stuff. Louden Wainwrights' wit was much better. So is Costello's though Joe only likes his country crooner songs not his innovative new wave. Joe with tongue in cheek and Bricks (from Ben Folds) puts down my musical taste. I guess he is being funny in the style of Ben Folds. Dinosaur Jr "Where you been?" is a great record liked by Jason and Kramz. Joe would rather listen to lighter touch of Ben Folds Five 24/7 who are oh so very tasteful and when they rock out, a little bit in every record so you know they are cool, one has got to love them. Joe doesn't like the Smiths. Jason does and I may not agree with Jason on whom the best bands are at all but Jason has a knack for liking pretty good bands I also like further down the line . Deeper cuts, harder to find records. I have rarely agreed with Joe, honestly, and this makes sense of why he would not like my tastes. So what I like 5 of the best songs of "Spirit" more than the 5 best songs of Led Zep (one of which they stole from Spirit!) Jason likes Wilco. Joe had a conniption when Jason wanted to include Roxy Music in Prog Rock (and they are Prog Art Rock though their songs rarely get to be 10 minutes long, how dull of them!) not because he didn't think Roxy was not Prog rock (who knows what the wizard of Was thinks, I can only speculate) but he just doesn't like them. to be continued, unless I am expunged. Go ahead and tell me You love Roxy Music, early Costello, Dinosaur Jr and you understand why Ben Fold's Five is only lightly likeable , etc. All of you take the Cranberries too seriously - I agree with none of you but in this case Jason seems to like them the most so I disagree the most with Jason.

I had every single Elvis Costello album on my list except the debut and Almost Blue from 1977-1983. He won 3x. Smiths are one of my favorite bands. Won in 86 and top 5 in 87. - Joe

I briefly owned a copy of No Need to Argue in college. I had this step-aunt who lived out of state and would randomly buy us CDs for Christmas that we didn't ask for instead of taking the time to find out what we liked, or taking the easy route and just giving us cash. When I got married 15 years later, she sent gifts that weren't on our registry. So that's her thing, I guess -- buying gifts she thinks people want. Anyway, it wasn't for me, so I sold it. That's pretty much my experience with the Cranberries.

It's the thought that counts. And she remembered you! I have blood aunts and uncles who've only ever given me guilt complexes for not attending family reunions even though I send them holiday cards. F***ing families!

@@burmajones803 It is the thought that counts. And, she did the same thing to her blood relatives, so it's not like she was singling me out or anything ("And you get a Cranberries CD, stepchild!"). Buying people random gifts is just a funny quirk to me. It's not anything I would personally feel comfortable doing. I have a hard enough time buying gifts for my immediate relatives.

I agree with Jason, no need to Argue is the Cranberries best and most consistent album. I played it to death. The other stuff leaves me a bit cold

Debut is far better than No Need To Argue. Linger, Sunday, Still Can't, How... even Iosa, Reason and Liar (Bonus Tracks) are great. It is one of the greatest debut albums of all time and my favourite record ever. Pitchfork NEVER reviewed any Cranberries album until 29 September 2021, because they always belittled the band. I imagine it is because Dolores died, they rated debut 8,5. NME even insulted Dolores so many times

I think I've heard all the songs I need to know from the Cranberries back in the 90s on their first three albums. And I wouldn't be disappointed if I never hear Linger again. Same for Zombie. I realize this might sound dismissive, but there's too much great music out there for me to justify spending time on more. Catch y'all on the Thursday wild card episode.

I listened to the debut album after watching this list... And it's just not for me. I liked a couple songs here and there but the production was really bland and too clean. There's nothing here that would keep me coming back or inspire me to deep dive into their discography. 🤔
