Stone cold. Hell, they were prolly so fuckin jaded just from the horrors they regularly faced, not to mention their hard, everyday life endured during that time period. Ppl dying was not an unfamiliar thing 😖. Same thing with freakin Bonnie and Clyde. People were literally clambering to see their bodies and their bullet riddled car for souvenirs. And this was before eBay! They needed it for those interesting stories to retell.

I actually think this was 100% not Crush's fault. This is the fault of whatever engineer told them the boilers would not explode. Making the people stand back that far likely saved the lived of dozens of not hundreds of people. Then constructing an alternate track to make sure no runaways happened. Crush was obviously prioritizing safety here and he worked off of trusted information. I would love to see something like this in the modern day.

It would be, if that were how it actually worked. Instead, the exact opposite happens. The worst destroy the best, because the human race is a weak, failed abortion of a species. Scott Joplin wrote a tune about this called "The Crush Collision March." The boiler explosions were particularly unlucky, as I know of a few really violent train crashes in the UK where the boilers didn't explode- Harrow, Ditton, Abergele. Maybe it was in this case because the engines met boiler to boiler on the same stretch of track.
