During the 1974 NFL season, Cincinnati Bengals head coach Paul Brown accused the Houston Oilers of cheating, since Oilers head coach Sid Gillman didn't send the Bengals game tapes in time. What followed was a bitter feud between two of the greatest coaches in the history of the sport. This is the story behind one of the biggest controversies in football in 1974

Just imagine how upset Paul Brown would have been if it had been the Browns rather than the Oilers not sending him the film on time.

Fun Fact about the early Bengals. They made the playoffs in the 3rd year of existence(1970). That year they started off 1-6. They won 7 in a row to finish 8-6 and won the division. They were shutout by the Colts in the playoffs.

6:15 The OIlers player getting this sack is Ted Washington, the father of the massive DT Ted Washington Jr., who was drafted by the Chiefs in '72 but never played a down for them. So it's a good revenge moment for him personally. He also had 11 sacks that season, the only double digit sack season of his career.

I read somewhere back then that NFL policy stated that teams had to send their THREE most recent game tapes out to their next opponent. Al Davis in his earlier years with the Raiders was criticized by other teams for sending out poor quality game film that made it more difficult to break down. It went as bad as it was nearly impossible to identify the players uniform numbers on screen. Has anybody else ever heard something similar?

The Bengals also had 11 starters out that season due to injury. This included Isaac Curtis, Boobie Clark, Essex Johnson and a good chunk of offensive line including Anderson for the last game and a half. That 17-10 victory over the Steelers was my first pro game and I was a Bengals and Ken Anderson fan for his whole career.

Not a high degree of difficulty though, considering he was totally unblocked. The Bengals wound up thrashing the Vikings 27-0 in that game which wasn't a tank job by the Vikes, since there were 2 games left afterwards and they played all their starters. That should've been a big clue as to how the Dolphins-Vikings Super Bowl was going to go.

Paul Brown was a great coach, maybe. Paul Brown's success was due to four factors: 1) Speed (having fast players) 2) Analyzing game film 3) Coach calling the plays 4) Generational compatibility with players Brown innovated 2) & 3). After Paul Brown won his last championship, he had barely a .500 record. He and his players were of a different generation and he couldn't relate to them, and they couldn't relate to him. The rest of the league began doing 2) & 3) and Brown did not continue to innovate.

In the 80's after glanville ran up the score on wyche's bengals both teams hated each other for a few seasons. Each game one would run up the score on the other if they got a big lead. That was nothing new for punk coach glanvillle, chuck noll instead of shaking his hand after steelers lost to oilers gave glanville a 'lecture' about running up the score on teams. One game in '89 season wyche rolled up the score 61-7 on glanville. The year after they went to the sb. Other scores...'90-oilers 48, cincy, 17. cincy 40, oilers, 20. Pardee was oiler coach now '88-cincy 44, oilers 21. oilers 41, cincy 6. This was a three year war between bengals/wyche and oilers in which the home team rolled up the score on the other winning by 20 + pts. or more. Only '89 first meeting, a 26-24 oilers win in the astrodome, was close.
