The CRAZIEST CLUELESSNESS in NFL on NBC HISTORY | Oilers @ Rams (1981)

In week 1 of the 1981 NFL season, the Houston Oilers played the Los Angeles Rams at Anaheim Stadium. NBC wanted to show the game locally in Los Angeles; however, the game was not sold out, so that wouldn't be possible just yet. And that's when NBC hatched up, quite possibly, the stupidest idea ever, as if they had no idea what they were doing

This isn't the only time that NBC has done this with a Southern California based team as in 2006 during the Stanley Cup Playoffs (for Game 6) with the Anaheim Ducks (which were still known as the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim). Even though this game was an elimination game, the Ducks RSN , Fox Sports West (now Bally Sports West) refused to allow OLN (which later became the now gone NBCSN which was owned by NBC) to broadcast the game in the LA/Anaheim market due to the loss of ad revenue on their end from not televising the game. NHL blackout rules at the time even for the playoffs stated that an RSN had the final say on whether or not a nationally televised game could be shown in a local market. To prevent this from happening, NBC attempted to not only buy some remaining tickets (like this) even though the game was largely sold out but then sell those tickets to Fox Sports West employees in order to convince them to lift the blackout. This was essentially NBC committing bribery. It did not work at all as Fox Sports West refused to lift the blackout & Ducks fans in the area had to watch their team on the RSN. The Ducks won this game 2-1 to keep their season alive & then won Game 7 in Calgary 3-0 to advance. One quick note about Anaheim Stadium, in addition to the Angels & the Rams it was also home to the California Surf of the NASL from 1978-1981. Like many multipurpose stadiums that housed an NFL, MLB & NASL team at the time, Anaheim Stadium was absolutely awful for soccer, with players complaining of slipping in the baseball infield & having football lines painted over soccer lines.

Nowadays, both the RSN and the national network co-exist. For example, here in NC i can watch the Hurricanes-Islanders series on ESPN (Mike Monaco and AJ Mleczko) rather than Bally Sports South.

NBC's lead NFL broadcasting tandem at the time, Dick Enberg and Merlin Olsen, lived in the Los Angeles area, so that too may have been a reason they were assigned to this game.

It should be noted that this isn't some little podunk NBC station in the middle of nowhere owned by Sinclair. This is KNBC, one of the original owned and operated stations for the network. One that's been continuously owned by NBC (or their parent company) since NINETEEN FORTY NINE. If anyone should know better, you would think it were the stationed owned by NBC.

Earlier in the week, I thought, “Not another blackout video,” but I then heard that it was the theme of the week, so I said 38.6 mea culpas and enjoyed the videos. Idiotic blackout rules were prevalent in the MLB, too, well into the late 80s before RSNs. In 1988, KTTV, the local Dodger station, didn’t show the game where Orel Hershiser broke Drysdsle’s scoreless inning streak. I called the station and was told the game wasn’t on their schedule to broadcast. Strangely, the game was in San Diego. I really enjoyed the theme this week.

Why would this game have been considered NBC’s best late game on paper that Sunday? The other game featured the opener for the Super Bowl champ Oakland Raiders on the road against their arch rivals and perennial power Denver Broncos. Since the Raiders were suing the league at the time trying to validate its relocation to LA, one would be forgiven for assuming that Raiders-Broncos would even be the preferred matchup for the Los Angeles market.
@johnmanier7968
@johnmanier7968 Год назад
NBC was a *very* distant third in the ratings in 1981, so this seems on par with many of their other decisions. However, Oilers-Rams was a classic uniform game, even though both teams were pretty bad in 1981 and even worse in 1982. I moved to LA in 1986, and for the 9 seasons when the Rams were still in Anaheim and the Raiders in LA, it was rare for either to have home games televised.

I think there were only two late afternoon NFL games on that opening weekend of the 1981 NFL season, both carried by NBC. The reason was that CBS broadcast the men's final of the U.S. Open tennis tournament at 4 P.M. EDT, and as a result, all of the NFL games broadcast on CBS had 1:05 P.M.EDT starts in order to show tennis across the full network at 4.

@@johnmanier7968 Nowadays, with the current TV rules, the Jets at Buffalo (Don Criqui, John Brodie) would be at 1pm, while NBC would have had 2 games with Oilers-Rams being seen everywhere expect from KRON in SF and the Moutain Time Zone, which would see Oakland at Denver (Charlie Jones, Len Dawson).

@@danielanderson4726True, though back then the 1:00 to 7:00 PM rule required one of the Jets and Giants (unless one was playing an ABC game) to be at 1:00 and the other at 4:00.
