This was one of the first races I watched. LOL. Unfortunately, I started watching several races before Gilles crashed and died. Being Canadian, Gilles was becoming a really big name and then that crash happened. The 70s, 80s and early 90s were crazy. De crasherez, and Hunt constantly ripping his driving up.... Hunt never suffered a fool. I miss him too.

The first F1 race i watched on television was the 1984 Monaco Grand Prix. Which was shaping up to be a possible first victory for Senna. Until the conditions forced the race to be stopped after 30 odd laps. Great commentary by James Hunt about Ayrton Senna at the end of the race as well.

I don't usually feel too sorry for Fred, but he didn't deserve that. He looked devastated, and that's not nice. Though some would say that it happening in Singapore was rather deliciously ironic, I am not thinking that. However, the curse of the anniversary/birthday/other celebration race struck again! You look through the history of important races in most drivers' careers and they rarely end well. A few outliers, but more often than not, they go out through no fault of their own. When I knew it was his 350th, I thought a) congrats, that's no mean feat* and b) you poor sod. *With Liberty/F1 adding races left right and centre, a rookie starting next year need only do 10 years to reach 240 races (Max hit 158 on Sunday!). Given how young most start these days - early 20s at most, a 15-20 year career is going to become a _lot_ more common. 20 years without missing a race (assuming nothing changes) will be 480 races! 15 years for 360. That's probably the most likely outcome. I don't know off the top of my head how many Lewis has done, but it's got to be a lot already, and he seems rejuvenated and ready to go for another few years - even a possible 5 more has been quoted by Toto!

Craziest race ever. Giacomelli retired after 4 laps when he was 2nd due to a suspension failure to his Alfa. Then throughout the race many heavy names retired in the midfield like Piquet, Laffite, Cheever, Watson, Lauda and Alboreto. At a certain point Patrese, Pironi, De Cesaris, Rosberg and Alboreto closed the gap on Prost, but then the Renault definitely took off. However, for over 20 laps Rosberg chased hard De Cesaris for the 4th place. De Cesaris held behind the finnish driver with a great defense and brought him to a mistake. Unfortunately his Alfa engine was misfiring in the last 15/20 laps, he would have won that race probably, great driver but terribly inconsistent, also for the cars that he drove, rip Andrea. Patrese was able also to restart his engine because the Loews Hairpin is in downhill, so he was quite lucky to fire it up. He thought that he had finished 2nd because he didn't knew that Rosberg retired.

If Patrese was properly disqualified before the checkered was shown, presumably one of the two Lotuses (who finished a lap down in 4th/5th) would take the win with the other in second and Pironi in third. This race was pretty much the entire 1982 season in a nutshell. 1982 saw 11 different winners in 16 races. That was a championship no one wanted to win. I mean, how can you blame the drivers? 2 fatalities, a huge amount of political bulls***, dangerous ground effect cars, a number of atrocious and nearly fatal accidents (like Jochen Mass and Mauro Baldi at Ricard- they came together at Signes and Mass's car hit the barriers so hard he was catapulted over the barriers and INTO THE CROWD, and the car caught fire. Thankfully, no one was killed- F1 nearly had its own version of the Le Mans disaster there. Mass retired from F1 right after that and went to drive Group C sportscars for Porsche).

SOoooo...then 1982 happened.....my driver was killed....his home track was immediately named after him, MY home race, the highlight of the year...but he wasn't racing...and another driver died at the start.... hat and these events in Monaco kind of explain the entire season....one big shit show.....11 different winners....death, destruction and politics....got to see Mario Andretti in a Ferrari, though...so there was that.

Fitting that F1's craziest finish happened in F1's craziest season. 1982 had it all. A number of different winners, a title fight which nobody expected, two fatal crashes and a career ending crash (one involving the favourite for the title, another the championship leader), drama between teammates at Ferrari and Renault, a driver's strike, a debacle of a final race, some outstanding races, the craziest finish to a race ever, and an unlikely world champion. Monte Carlo in my opinion is the worst tract for racing on the circuit of races. It's all to often a game of follow the leader and just hope he crashes out.

No, the weirdest F1 finish has to be the one where Schumacher won the race sitting in the pits. Surely?
