According to Hadith you are right, Yet it wasn't out of "fear of the potential of Adam" it was because of the "Honorary prostration" to this lacking (in his eyes) creature ! If you read the Hadith you will notice two instances, the first when Iblis kept floating around Adam as a construct of Mud he said "He is destined for greatness" The second after God Turned him to clay Iblis said "It is Hollow (Full of vulnerabilities)" Then comes the order... (notice how When Zabania torture they say : taste O dearly "honored" one!!!) Also when god says "And We have certainly honored the children of Adam and carried them on the land and sea ....." You will notice Iblis accuse God that he "Seduced him" by letting him roam around the newest invention! and allowing him to know his potential & weaknesses! Also he claimed Energy based creatures (Djin - Angels - Unknown) are superior to Matter based ones - (Matter decays to energy & energy forms into matter basically two sides of a coin!) In the Quran the ones who the angels describe as corruptors of land & bloodsheders are non other than Human-beings!!! (Combine with Hijr 26~ 28 ) you will notice a strange thing... Allah gives an intro of his creations to the Angels!!!!!!! He start with the extinct Human-beings"انسان" then the previous creation of Djin then announces the new species that will "succeed" the Humanity "بشر" literal meaning exposed skin!!! Here The Angels think we already saw what they have done!!! The reason I say God swept the old Humanity is in many verses in one Ibrahim Verse 19: "He (so) will, He can do away with you and bring forth a new creation" Also in many verses God emphasize on creating our kind from the remains of another! Also the term "successor" خليفة is only used to replace the now dead with a living to carry on!! thus it can't be applied on God.. It is true that we are the underdogs of Gods creations, this is why when we abide by his orders we are leaps beyond the Angels (We are vulnerable to a very devout, relentless, active, stubborn enemy who witnessed the creation of our kind not to mention we have ourselves as enemies too)
