I tend to worry that I habitually "over-plan", but it was great seeing how much thought, time and consideration you put into your projects as well. Reaffirms to me that the extra time and attention is worth it in the end 🙌 Can't wait to see the finished piece!

Just sitting and staring at a spot is very underrated. Visualizing what you want in a space and how you will use it in that space is so good for design. It humanizes it a bit. It’s incredible how many products are created that feel like no one ever considered a person using it at all because it was designed in this bubble with use as a secondary.

Very insightful! I'm a lead engineer that with several multi discipline engineers under me. I can use some of your insight to help myself plan and organize better. The mood board can used to represent different major portions of the project. The ability to move tasks up and down is very useful. Much more dynamic than an excel list or written notes

Thanks for sharing your process! Especially comparing the estimated vs. real time of the task. I usually get amazed/frustrated by how much of a time certain tasks eat and need to incorporate this to the forecasted total time of the project.
@GetHandsDirty
@GetHandsDirty Год назад
Yes, I know!! So frustrating to realize every single time that things end up taking more time than what they “were supposed to take”. Doing that exercise can really help. I still feel some of that frustration but little by little it becomes easier to accept and less stressful.

Awesome Job Cris, this was a refreshing insight into the process and organization of your project. It was also nice to see you on camera instead of just voice overs. It gives us the audience a point of connection with you and your personality. I wish more youtubers were doing this type of video, I love the build vids but its nice to also take a look at how someone like yourself works through a project. Shopnation just recently made a video on how he was trying to solve a dust collection issue on his miter station and getting a glimpse of the iterations and thoughts and seeing him work through this was very cool. So props to you and look forward to the build.

Thank you so much for this video. I appreciate all the explanations and that you included the silent stares while designing. I've been feeling really overwhelmed with creative projects lately, I feel paralyzed because of the internet, every process on a screen seems so quick and optimized as if the person executing it knew all things even before starting. In real life ideas take a lot of time, so seeing you as the amazing designer you are working on the initial unpolished steps makes me feel a bit closer to achieving what I have in mind. Also, your apartment is absolutely amazing, it reflects what a creative and disciplined person you are. I would love to know how you started on woodworking or if you do a Q&A sometime. Big congrats from Colombia.

I'm one of those people who has lots of ideas and never gets around to doing them. I have notebooks from my middle and high school days filled with drawings. One of those ideas was a cabinet that was modular with the modules held in place with large dovetails and matching pins to hold the next piece to it, or half pins for finished sides. I would make units in double/half, square and long pieces but also could customize some pieces like you had to customize to fit that odd space. Anyway I'd have a collection of units of various sizes, like the building blocks we played with as kids, and could mix and match and build everything from a bed side cabinet with small modules for different storage needs, to a huge wall unit or murphy bed. There's probably been dozens or more things like that that have actually been built by people with the same ideas.

@michael-rommel
@michael-rommel Год назад
Hey Cris! Awesome, that you give us all some insight to your creative process, I really dig that! In my current (smaller) projects I really spend much more time in the "sitting on couch contemplating" phase. Where every option is just racing through my head and I write/sketch them only after they made it through this mental pre-selection. The struggle I deal with the most, is the limitations of all the non-subscription SW available. E.g. FreeCAD is OK for modelling individual parts, incl. 3D printing or CAM carving on the CNC. I find it hard to use, when you are dealing with the multi-part assemblies, like in your media console. Maybe I need to look again elsewhere, but I will never accept any subscription based program - it can not be justified for the few times I use it. Your apartment is really a wonder in terms of space utilization - maybe you could consider putting a video out on Never Too Small - they have beautiful vids on
@GetHandsDirty
@GetHandsDirty Год назад
I totally get the contemplating part taking hours and hours or several days! As for subscription bases programs, I honestly tend to use what feels easier and more comfortable to me even if paying for it would be necessary. I also don't dig too deep online to find other options and end up sticking with SketchUp forever 😆 I will get in touch with NTS when I feel it is the right time. Thanks a lot Micha!
@meperson
@meperson Год назад
If you use it for personal purposes only you can get Fusion 360 - you can build individual components and assemblies (and even moving joints between them). Quite fancy for free software.
