I tought I was the only one that found the Halo CE maps pretty creepy, I remember back in the early 2000s when I was just a child playing those maps alone to explore them and to test the guns, and I always felt that unnerving and creepy sensation of being in an ancient abandoned place, sometimes feeling observed by someone or something hidden around, and just to think when those places where built, by who or for what purpose they were built always scared tf out of me.

Dude...even after all of these years...I feel the same. The atmosphere of Halo CE was basically being an unstoppable soldier, but at the same time...you were fucking scared shitless due to the layout, ambiance and lore of the whole place. Literally a long forgotten Installation...completely empty, without any trace of inhabitants. Even when I was kicking ass throughout the campaign I felt an itch at the back of my head, that something was watching me. Some of the areas back in the day just straight up scared me and made me feel terrified and uncomfortable, mainly the underground areas...that's why Halo CE will always be something special.

I love the creepy, mysterious ambiance of Halo: CE - both in the campaign and multiplayer. None of the other Halo games have been able to recapture that unnerving feeling of the superunknown that we got in the first game. I really hope Halo Infinite tries to capitalize on that. My favorite map, even with others from Halo on PC included: Sidewinder. Such good memories playing it with friends when I was younger, and I love big, open maps.

This video reminds me of why I got into CE when I first played it. I remember playing with my cousins on their Xboxes when it first came out. But then the PC version came out, and I got to play by myself... My favorite memories of solo playing focus on just how eerie and creepy the whole thing was, but also feeling a sense of epic adventure to it all. The main menu, with its fly-around camera centered on the ring-world, the Gregorian style chanting... then booting the campaign on heroic and blowing through the whole thing in the dark, alone, on my parents' computer. I distinctly remember thinking "Keyes doesn't keep his gun loaded? The balls on that man..." in the first mission, being really engrossed in Assault on the Control Room, having a hard time with, but still LOVING the Library (after being freaked out with the whole mission 343 Guilty Spark), and being so devastated when FoeHammer went down in the final mission... The whole creep factor, the mystery, the music, the ambiance, and the grandeur of the whole game STILL gives me goosebumps, 20 years later. And I can't tell you how many times I played this game as a kid... Don't even get me started on Halo 3, though. I'll go forever about Halo 3... (skipped Halo 2 in this because, admittedly, I didn't play it very much until right before Halo 3 came out).

My favorite HCE map, gameplay and lore wise, is Chill Out. In almost every game with forge mode, I've remade this map because I love it so much. In Reach, the level was partially submerged in the water, with that one glitch that lets you do that (in place of the fog effects). Assuming the map was some kind of oversized covenant freezer, I liked to think the place shut down and just melted everywhere. Colors fading away and everything, creating a damp, colorless facility. In Halo 4 it was the same thing, minus the water, a bit run down, and taken over by the UNSC as a temporary base. More cover, more human weapons. In H2A, it was the same thing again but ruined and broken down, with a few missing rooms and new pathways. Finally, in Halo 5, the teleporters were shut down (removed with spark effects in their places), as the level was further broken down with pipes falling out of the walls, creating clamber and spring-jump spots for Halo 5's improved gameplay. Assuming Infinite has good forge, I'll probably add to this even more. I like to think I've created my own little timeline for my favorite map here.

Nothing comes close to Halo CE's dark, enigmatic, isolated atmosphere. The brutalist and yet cathedral-like forerunner architecture, extremely ancient and sci-fi/futuristic at the same time. And the sounds. Even the elevators sound fucking incredible.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks that there is a specific tone in the original maps that has faded over time with newer entries. It's a super small detail, but I adore that you can see the stars even in the middle of the day. It really makes the ring feel that much more alien.

Have you ever thought by the glyphs you see at 5:15, is a representation of the Halo firing? Like seriously look at it and its design. The middle symbol represents Halo, but the projectiles one both sides of this design is the ring's pulse it fires once activated. Perhaps this was a warning for those who fought on this battlefield. A sign of something more powerful than they could have ever imagined.

i appreciate the observations on these maps but your definition of 'lore' is a bit off. the title and intro are pretty misleading, the only genuine lore you've provided here are the names of a few ships/locations, most of which can be found in the map descriptions. hate to be a prick but this was a pretty disappointing video

Woah. I will admit I never realized you could see a galaxy out that window. Really reminds me of the old Marathon level-design. Lot of focus on what visual storytelling they could manage. ... and speaking off, everything you said about Infinity felt like a direct reference to Marathon: Infinity.
@wallamazoo01
@wallamazoo01 4 года назад
The general ambience of the old games gave you this level of immersion that was akin to playing a frantic battle while never really feeling calm or relaxed, the tremors and almost like voices howling made you look over your shoulder like something beyond your opponents was watching you. Halo Combat Evolved used simplicity to maximize the immersion. Silence, other than the noises heard. In all the levels on Halo you can hear noises of creatures and the other inhabitants that are never seen. It truly makes you more at odds with your sanity. As of late? There's really too much going on in backgrounds, so much noise. It was like in Doom 2 on missions in Hell with some more quiet soundtracks that you could hear the gurgling of blood, the moaning of demons half-dead and mutilated on the floor, wishing to die than feel pain. When demons in all the modern Dooms just vanish in blood-mist, it's not as gritty as imps or hell knights trying to reclaim their organs or crawl in pain with severed limbs. This is why, altogether, simplicity is better. When Halo: Combat Evolved's enemies are slain, there is just the ambience. Even though you've won, you can't seem to calm down.

I loved these clandestine, barren maps of Halo and early shooters. They all use interesting loctions not seen in game. They evoke such mystery as you say, and I like that they've remained ambiguous and retained the feeling of Halo CE in general; stranded in deep space, a countless trillions of miles from home for all you know and fighting through the rising nightmare of the ring and infestation as the last man standing to eventually escape back into the void.

Monumental? Ancient? Sometimes, when you can't put something to words, try imagining a situation that makes you feel the same way and just say that. Boom you have yourself a kind of metaphor. People here have said, for example, "it makes me feel like I'm being watched".

I think my favorite part of the maps is that most of them are actually ON the ring. Like, if you were to travel across the ring, you'd be able to find each of them somewhere on it. It makes the ring feel so much more like it was once inhabited, which makes the emptiness of the ring that much more concerning.
