Wales is such a fascinating country with a lot of obscure traditions and quirks which have been lost over time. This is one of them, the Mari Lwyd. This is a Christmas tradition, of all things. And I think it's quite unique and perhaps it would be interesting to see a possible resurgence of it.

So let me get this straight. It’s a Christmas tradition to *rap battle a horse skeleton to keep your alcohol?* Damn Welch sounds amazing.

@@TomiTJWI'm so sad that I've grown up in mid Wales instead of somewhere more welsh considering we don't have many proper Welsh traditions here

It may seem strange if you’re unfamiliar but the Mari Lwyd is by no means ‘creepy’. Every time I’ve seen a Mari it’s been a jolly and humorous experience. Glad this video is spreading knowledge of the tradition!

Welsh has actually grown massively in the last couple of decades, its important to keep traditions around the language alive

my family and I are doing Mari Lwyd this year. we have been rehearsing our songs all day today 😁 theres are a few characters not mentioned here, my favourite being the Sweeping Maiden who cleanses the house and the Mari Lwyd blesses the family. she was the pregnant mare that was put outside so that Jesus could have her birthing space in the barn. symbolic of the ousting of our pagan traditions by Christianity in the dark ages ❤

@@korallemonade It's a hobby horse tradition and there were/are very similar ones in England. No evidence of their existence much before 1800. It's all about out of work farm labourers entertaining their neighbours in the hope of a drink and a pie or perhaps a penny or two. Nothing to do with pagans or baby Jesus.

The singing part of the Mari Lwyd tradition is certainly unique to Wales but there are other 'mast' hobby horses of similar design in several areas of England. The 'Poor Old Horse' in the Yorkshire/Derbyshire/Nottinghamshire border, the 'Old Tup' (a sheep) in the same area, the 'Hooden Horse' in Kent and 'The Broad' (a bull) in the Cotswolds.

Cymreag (Welsh) is a growing language. Here, in America, there are many Welsh groups. Check out Welsh Society of Western New England. They recently had a visit from the Mari Lwyd. Also, check out NAFOW, the annual weekend celebrating all things Welsh. Nadolig Llawen. (Merry Christmas)

The decline in the Welsh language has been halted, mostly due to Welsh medium schools, where English speaking children are taught Welsh in an incredibly short time. These are extremely popular with English speaking Welsh parents. Also there are prohibitively high taxes on owning a second holiday home in Wales, so that has relieved pressure from the language as well as help local people get onto their own property market. There are also thousands like me, who are slowly learning the language through a couple of excellent resources. We are claiming back our language and our traditions. And - this is significant - we are no longer half-heartedly laughing along when an English person calls us sheep-shaggers. We now bloody well push back. Cymru am byth, yma o hyd.

Yes, it's good to see the old custom and tongue coming back. It's so cool that at Chepstow they dance across the bridge to England while wassailers from Gloucestershire dance into Wales, singing ''Here we come a wassailing''.

It has become clear that my main channel is not working out for me. If you're here expecting goofy country balls videos, that's not going to happen. I hope you understand. I'm trying to build a new audience, so if you're here from the main channel. Please, unsubscribe. I mean it in the nicest way possible lol. It's just so RU-vid will see that my videos are watched by the people who are truly interested and promote my videos based on that audience. Thanks, and I know I pronounced the Mari Lwyd wrong. :P
