Right on Sonny It’s about time someone took a shot at Don McLean for saying ‘the music died’ I always found that so depressing. I’m sure Buddy would agree that music was born outa his genius. God bless Buddy and the Crickets. Peace from Montreal
Seeing Sonny play and sing in such a laid- bare fashion, makes you realise how great he really is. These guys came from an era of self-discovery that will never be repeated.
Sonny Curtis is one of the sweetest , most genuine men it's been my pleasure to meet / Besides this song he has written many classics like "I Fought The Law "."Walk Right Back ", "The Straight Life ""More Than I Can Say " and "I'm No Stranger To The Rain ". A huge talent ,he never really has got the recognition he deserves. Waylon Jenning summed it up when he said that all he ever wanted to be was Sonny Curtis.!
i met sonny at one of his solo gigs at yeovil england great show seen and met the crickets with and without sonny all shows were great all talented musician keep on rocking
Sonny Curtis---- God bless you and your music. You and your wonderful friends like Buddy Holly have given the world a huge amount of joy. You're one of my all-time musical heroes.
I knew Sonny at one time. Sonny wrote I'm No Stranger To The Rain and I Fough The Law. He was good friends with Buddy, but wasn't a member of the Crickets, until after Buddy l passed away. It devistated Sonny when Buddy passed away. They were the best of friends and played music together since their teen years. At one time they were opened shows for Elvis Presley.
Thanks for that, Margo. It's always interesting to hear from people who know the real story. It's easy to forget it's all real. Real people, with real lives. Hope you're well. Have a nice Xmas.
Margo, did you listen to the lyrics? He was in the Crickets before and after Buddy was alive. He’s very clear. He played the fiddle and buddy played the guitar and sometimes banjo! Plus Sonny’s Wikipedia page says so.
What a sublimely touching telling of his time with Buddy. What an incredible talent Buddy and all the Crickets were! His lead guitar work Blue Days, Black Nights is incredible!
I finally got around to playing a stack of old 45s I purchased a few years back. Didn't know what was in there, but some real gems turned up. One was a Buddy Holly single. Rave on. It was the most played & most scratched of the lot. Still sounds good. All of them are 50s & early 60s, & a lot of fun to hear on a portable player. I was born in 61, and live in New Zealand. Rock n roll changed the world, but I still love the old time country music too. Thanks Sonny.
Just saw these guys last night and they were great. A 3 piece band that can still rock and roll. Was lucky enough to get pictures and autographs, but the thrill was hearing them play knowing that they helped start rock and roll and played with the great Buddy Holly. They were asked what Buddy would be doing today and they said still writing and singing because that's what he loved to do. May they play as long as possible and if you get the chance, go hear them, it will be worth it.10/7/12 pin
Thanks for this.. It was emotional when you said the music didn't die because he lives every time we play Rock and roll. I grew up listening to Buddy Holly, to this day I love the songs, they mean a lot to me. I'm a songwriter myself, and wish he was still with us.
Thanks for posting this clip!! Buddy was the reason I first picked up a guitar in '79. Then about 20 years ago, I started singing with a band in Europe, doing Buddy's songs along with others from that era...and I had a ton of fun with it. If you google "Billy Holly" you'll see I caused some confusion as to Buddy's name, as in "Billy Holly died in 1959," etc. The audience for that is smaller now but I relish the chance to sing whenever I can. Buddy and his music WILL live forever!
You always tell it right, Sonny. I doo so remember they had a whole movie which wasn't right, but hey it was HOLLYwood. *Your story* is always right and it certainly doesn't have to rhyme for me...
I know the song from DVD of The Buddy Holly Story produced by Paul McC. Sonny was from Lubbock just like Buddy I believe. He also wrote I Fought The Law which I played every night in the Surf Cowboys. Portland.
Sonny Curtis once blanked me in the 70's in a closed London club..there was him, me and around 6 others...I wonder if he remembers ? It's a bummer when you discover your heroes have feet of clay.
The Crickets played at the Iowa Straw poll last month (for Sen. Rick Santorum)-I checked out a few minutes. They (including Sonny) sounded tired (this was 11:30AM)-it was sad to witness.
Everyone would like to see a movie about their music hero(s) bot Hollywood will get it wrong EVERYTIME. I saw the Buddy Holly Story when I was a kid and loved it,but the one on YT is truer. Someday I hope that Gene Vincent / Eddie Cochran get a movie.I can only hope that it is an independent film or made overseas where they will more likely get it right. If you saw ''Cadillac Records'' you know what fiction looks like. Great music deserves better.
@DOGPOUNDBREW , Sorry, brother, but if I can see what a fabulous guitarist Sonny is, maybe you can. Open your mind and ears and you might learn something. I know you'll be all pissed when you read this, but get over it. As for Sonny not being able to sing, it's all about communicating and in this song he tells it right to your heart.
