A Catalan here! In fact it's Caga Tió (which means make poop, log) and it's a strange tradition indeed... we have a peculiar relation with poop... The tradition was to go to the forrest and look for a log in the first days in December, than you feed it with your leftovers and on Christmas eve you hit it with a stick while you sing a song, and it gives you in return some traditional Christmas sweet food, as torró or neules (it is all time covered with a blanket, so you can hide anything you want under it). After that, the tió helps you heat your home burning in he fireplace. By the way, your blanket is beautiful!!!!
Siiii Marta! I've lived in the UK for 10 years now, and my parents sent me a Tió a few years ago. Our tradition is that the Tió poops small presents, like ones you'd put in the Christmas Stocking (I'm half English, half Spanish/Catalan). My (British) in-laws love it! 😂 And when you translate the song... 😅
Yep! Another catalan here! What's weird about fake feeding a log (it must have a face drawn, and it should wear a certain hat) and then having kids hit it with broomsticks while chanting so that it poops treats and small presents? Burning it afterwards is optional, however, we kept it and used it again every year. It's our take on the christmas log :)
Congratulations to Bee!!! 🎉🎊💖 I know it's a little sneaky, but have you thought about taking the label out of your grandfathers old waist coat and sewing it into yours!! 😂 Maybe he'll think he has a new old waistcoat!! 😂 just a thought! I LOVE your cardigan!!! It is absolutely gorgeous!!! Like everything you make!!! Thank you so much for sharing everything with us!! Please take care and stay safe and healthy 💕💗
I was brought up in Catalonia! Caga Tió 😂😂😂 yes, it's a thing! But rather than "uncle", tió is a log. So it's the pooping log!! You feed it food scraps in the run up to Christmas and Christmas Eve he poops presents!! Hooray! For us, it was more of Christmas stocking type of presents, but I think it may depend on the tradition in the family.
OH MY GOD! I had no idea Knit Collage worked in tandem with Indian women who spin the yarns. Creating sustainable, fair, and safe work for Indian women is a cause that is incredibly near to my heart. I am absolutely going to treat myself to some of their yarns.
What I love the most about this yellow cardigan is all the little "problems" it created for you...mismatched dyelots and buttons and the sewing challenges. None of these things are visible to the non-knitter! I think it's adorable, not to mention the beauty of the actual knitted cables and lace. Deadline knitting is a total no-no for me. Love your saga of the kidnapped waistcoats! It so reminds me of my mother-in-law and her repairs. She always looked elegant and beautifully dressed but underneath, oh dear! Laughing! Families are so precious and comical. Your love is shining through for sure. Your little definition of Christmas in this multicultural world really resonates with me. Looking forward to your Vlogmas. The cardie looks lovely. I really like the tie at the neck. I think it's great that you can laugh about the situation with your grandfather. Good for you.
I love your stories! You have such a charming outlook on life. I think you should pleasantly ask for the waistcoat back, and then where it yourself every time you see your grandfather as a reminder to him of the loving gift. It is always a pleasure to spend virtual time with you. I always learn something new, and I am no spring chicken (🐔). You are a gift to us all!
Love your yellow cardigan, your version!! Thinking about knitting for myself...Good Job :)) I am knitting for over 30 years now and I love to follow young knitters and see your enthusiasm, thanks
Congratulations to the winner. Enjoy the beautiful yarn. Your sweater is so pretty as is that blanket going to be. Also love the socks. As well as lol on sisters socks.
I like your outlook on life, where you don't let every little thing affect you deeply, I completely agree and strive for the same! Life is too short and we shouldn't allow others to steel our joy.
The story about your grandfather and the waist coat - ha, ha - I had to break off my knitting to have a really good laugh! I have had similar experiences with my father. I once gave him a really expensive knitted jumper for christmas (bought on sale, but still - I was a student at the time). It was in cashmere, with a simple design in black and white. Nothing extravagant at all. He opens it, tryes it on, and says: Sorry, but I feel like a "nisse" (goblin or pixie in english) in this. And he was only in his early sixties at the time. I don't think he ever wore it. Well, well, I hope your grandfather is wiser and/or decides to be brave :) Love your podcast! It really inspires me. Autumnal greatings from the south of Norway
Oh wow I remember seeing that cardigan in prior videos. It really did turn out bright and spiffy. Doesn't look put of style despite being a vintage pattern
I love you cardigan! You are such a professional knitter! It would take me 10 life times to get as skilled you are. I would wear any gift you made with pride.
I love the yellow cardigan!! Maybe you could make a cute headband with the bow detail from the cardigan in the rest of the yellow to wear when its chilly!
I was also musing that you could finely stripe that leftover yellow with something else (white, grey, black, colour?) to use it up for a camisole or something, or use it in colourwork, a pair of mittens maybe? I bet the colour difference would be less obvious in a stripe or between cuffs/main part of mittens!
I love the cardigan !! It looks so good on you. I like your sock mending . I have not done the the knitted patch yet but done swissdarning and scottish darning . I like mending socks. I find it very relaxing.
Good news about Vlogmas! I would love to see more of your houseplants and, a big ask, I know, some seasonal music performed by you? I love the vibrancy of your acidic card , by the way!
jealous of your beautiful coloring and how nice you look in that chartreuse yellow! i have the perfect coloring for your mineral pink sweater and it feels unfair that you look great in both 😆
That's so sweet, thank you hehe! I do find pink a hard colour to wear as some pinks can make me look a bit dead (actually same goes for yellow), but that particular yarn for the mineral pink sweater is pretty awesome
I'm not sure if someone already made this suggestion, but maybe consider knitting a cami/bralette with the remaining yellow yarn to match with the cardigan?
I would personally love more tutorial or stitch with me videos. Like right now, I am having a hell of a time trying to translate a sock pattern written for DPNs using my circular needles and magic loop method.
Thank you so much for sharing your lack of enthusiasm for deadline knitting! I feel exactly the same way -- having a deadline makes knitting stressful and it starts to feel like a chore instead of an enjoyable hobby. I'm in the same boat as you right now -- I'm knitting my mum a cardigan for Christmas. It will be her first Christmas and winter at home here in Canada in a long time because she and my dad previously spent their winters in Florida, but of course Covid-19 is rampant in the U.S. and here in Nova Scotia case numbers are very low (for now). I wanted to do something extra special for her this year and I've never knitted her anything before so this was a perfect opportunity. However, my mum exclusively wears black, so I chose to knit Recoleta by Joji Locatelli in black bamboo silk yarn and it has been a lot of work. I'm very hopeful that she will love it and be very appreciative of it like your partner is of the things you knit for him, however she mentioned off-hand once that she doesn't like garments that look hand-knitted, so there's a slight chance she could have a similar reaction to that of your grandfather. I'll find out on Christmas Day when I gift it to her. As for a vlogmas topic, I think it would be really neat if you did a fashion show of all the knitted items you have made for yourself in the past year (shown off in the order you made them) to give us viewers an idea of what you make in a year. I'd also be curious to see a house tour if you're comfortable doing that. Maybe it's because the camera is always facing the same spot in your house that I want to see what's on the other side of it -- what do you see when you film? Good luck with vlogmas this year!
Hi Anushka!! your vintage cardigan is soo lovely on this bright yellow!! You integrated the different dyelots so well that i don't think anyone can tell the difference! About your grandfather's saga, I 'm sorry to hear that he' s not using the waistcoat you knitted for him, perhaps he doesn't want to make it worn out or sth? But still...At least you got the best attitude to deal with this and you enjoyed making it, so he' s the only one losing the chance of wearing something beautiful, warm and handmade by his graddaughter.. As for the catalan traditions, especially the caga tió you mentioned, I find them so cool and funny!! Not a catalan myself, but my boyfriend. I was laughing for a long time when i learned about it and on top of that he enlightened me with another poopy figure: the caganer!! xD A figure defacating that can be found in the nativity scenes for the christmas period! Looking forward for your upcoming vlogmas! Thank you for your great pocasts! I m always listening to them while knitting! :) Greetings from Sweden
i’ve been making a point about making my christmas a little more of a yule celebration :). it’s nice to take the opportunity to connect with the solstice
Lovely chat as always! I hope your grandpa will go over his stash of cardigans soon enough! I am knitting now my first item on the round! It is easier and harder at the same time, but practice will make it better. I hope during the vlogmas you will teach us some mending techniques! Thank you, have a lovely week you too!
For the comment about about the "the gift spurned" . It's easier to understand why your grandfather reacted to the gift that way if your family comes from a non western culture. As an arab I totally understand why he reacted that way and I see it as endearing. He doesn't want you to worry about him so he doesn't want to encourage you to give him things.
This is why stashless is not the way!! :p there will always be leftovers and seemingly pointless balls of yarn, but they always end up in some cool project in the end I find
So excited for Vlogmas!! Another amazing video! Just wondering what do you work as? You mentioned students but I thought you were doing a phD? Idk I'm just trying to gather context. Always love your videos xx currently crocheting one large granny square out of all my stashed yarn for my mother for Christmas
You know what, some people are craft worthy and some are not. Doesn't matter if they are family or not. The only craft worthy person in my entire family is my daughter, the rest get store bought presents. I do, on the other hand, have several friends that are very craft worthy.
Catalan Christmas traditions are the best, have your students told you about the "caganer" in the nativity scene? It's hard to know why Christmas = poo but highly enjoyable and strange
😂 no we mainly focused on hitting him with a stick last year, I guess the nativity scene really would be full of poo since it's in a barn with animals and a newborn baby!
@@TheCrimsonStitchery Hahaha well the caganer is a whole character (human 😂) , who casually poops in the background. I guess not even the birth of Jesus stops the call of nature!
LMAO!!! Well I guess you gotta go when you gotta go...maybe he didn't realise it was the christ child? Was this before or after the wise men turn up? And did he stop for them??
