All I'm going to say, is that if even you don't know why your characters keep getting together, that's not good writing. Cause especially when it's in the romance genre, that relationship is holding the whole damn story together. Other genres can more often get away with mediocre romances if the rest of the story is good. But in romance, if you can't say why your two leads keep getting back together when how often they argue is just exhausting, you need to go back to the drawing board and figure it out. That's the backbone of a good romance! Even saying that the sexual attraction is just that intense would be better than a 'I dunno'. Also when you're writing to a younger audience that is still defining what a healthy relationship is for them, and romanticizing abusive behavior, don't start deflecting onto someone else's work. EL James got thrashed for romanticizing abuse and her genre was much older than yours! Also, I don't like GOT, but the audience is older and even your audience should know you don't murder people. But we've seen from other media, such as PLL that depicting unhealthy or abusive relationships CAN influence teenagers and younger and make them think that something like dating your teacher is fine. When you write, you have to think about that. If you're going to write abuse or unhealthy relationships, don't romanticize them! You don't have to hold the readers hand, but you also shouldn't be acting like it's a good thing.
@stephaniemasson1224
@stephaniemasson1224 2 года назад
Agreed. If you, the writer, don't know why your characters love each other, why are you even writing a romance novel? The relationship is the entire point of the genre, you can't make them be together "just because". There has to be some reason, any reason! Because if there's no reason, why would I even care whether they stay together or not?

that comparison to george r.r. martin just angered me. he's writing a story set in a medieval time period, where killing is a thing that occurs and the majority of people in todays settings arent going to be influenced to kill after reading/watching it. however After contains ordinary people that viewers can see themselves in (or with) set in a modern day setting. its more relatable, and will influence young viewers like my teenage sister into thinking this relationship is ok
@opheliami3268
@opheliami3268 2 года назад
movies/books generally art can be whatever you want it to be. It doesn’t claim to be the reality. Sometimes we want to see things that we would never acc want to experience in real life. Let’s take 356 days for example. Now many ppl genuinely enjoyed that movie, does that mean they really want to be kidnapped by the Italian mafia? (I’m sure they may joke about it but let’s be real almost no one would acc want that). The author isn’t obligated to write perfectly healthy relationship scenarios if it’s not what she wants and Cardi B isn’t obligated to censor her songs just cause some parents got upset. I read After when it first came out (I was 14 now I’m 21) and I loved it back then however I don’t think I’d like the books now (absolutely hated the movie) You mature as you grow and trust me your teenage sister will be fine. If she’s too young to distinguish between fiction and reality your parents have the responsibility to take care of her, not the author. But that’s just my take I can also see your point of view.
@queerlibtardhippie9357
@queerlibtardhippie9357 2 года назад
@@opheliami3268 Umm... yes. Sometimes it does mean that they want to be kidnapped by an Italian mafia. People aren't always joking. Just because you turned out fine doesn't mean that the millions of girls who listened to Lana Del Rey when they were 14 aren't now making TikTok videos about how to be a sugar baby. Young people being influenced by romanticized media is something people have to acknowledge. Not everybody comes to the conclusion that it was romanticized in the first place.
@opheliami3268
@opheliami3268 2 года назад
@@queerlibtardhippie9357 So your solution would be to censor everything cause people exist who are gullible? Those who genuinely believe that the Italian Mafia kidnapping thing would turn out like in the movie are either kids, who should've been monitored (there's 100% an age restriction) and raised better or adults who are too naive to be on their own yet (or Americans cause I've been there and the insane things some have told me made me loose braincells, apparently Europe is a country and Italy a myth). My point is that you should be able to create whatever you want. When I was in school we read classics with way more romanticisation, especially of mental abuse yet it was clear to all of us that it's not "couple goals" but just a story.

@@opheliami3268 i think the point that is trying to be made is that sure you can make books like these, sure you can write about abusive as fuck relationships and toxic love affairs, but we should be aiming to do better. i don’t think it’s this author’s fault specifically for writing this book series, because she has every right in the world to do so, but if books and media like these exist, we also should be having the conversation of “hey, this is NOT healthy in any way and you should NOT be aiming to have a relationship like this”, since the author does not seem to be providing that. i think if you’re an author you can choose to write about topics like this, believe me i do write about these topics, but always delivering the message that an abusive relationship should not be glorified or tolerated. anna todd does not deliver this message because if you read the books, you’ll see that hardin and tessa are SO abusive and manipulative over each other, but in the end they end up together without having to work through their abusive habits, so it gives out the message to very young girls and boys, who do not have the maturity to realize that this kind of relationship if abusive and should not be glorified, that loves conquers all and that if you hold on to that person that manipulates and abuses you, you will be happy in the end. it’s not how this works. i endured an abusive relationship for years before realizing that love does not conquer all and going to therapy. books and media like this perpetrate that idea. so to summarize, yes you have every right in the world to write about these topics, but you should deliver the message that these relationships are abusive and do not work out in the end :) that’s my take and i hope i don’t feel anyone feel attacked, it’s just my opinion

Romance is big business. Several years ago I checked out the writers guidelines for one of the big romance publishing houses. I was curious because I heard you could make a decent income writing romance novels. The writing guideline was actually an outline on how to write the novel. For every chapter of the novel they had the plot points that should occur between the main character and the love interest. You were free to elaborate but you had to have those plot points in the novel. That was why these authors could crank out 12 novels a year. Now this was several years ago so I don't know if this is still true but I thought it was fascinating. The whole business was geared around throwaway books that could be cranked out by the truck load.

I really don't like the author because she was married with kids also she was about mid 20s when she wrote After and Harry was around 19. That is so weird writing a fan fiction about someone that is under 20. It is also a fan fiction full of smut. So damn weird

It's sad how so many teenagers romanticize toxic relationships. Please know that fighting and being emotionally drained all the time isn't healthy. Yes, any relationship will go through hardships, but we must know when it's time to move on to something better. From the teenager/YA perspective, life and love can be full of drama, but it really doesn't have to be. You don't have to go through all that just to prove that your love is strong and true. Maybe the reason that you're going through all of that is because it's not meant to be in the first place. Don't ignore the signs. Abuse commonly hides in those overprotective and "passionate" relationships. Love yourself first!

the fact that she doesn't know what the relationship is about, SPEAKS VOLUMES. normally a writer knows exactly why something happens in the books, and then reveals it to the audience. she basically just admits that it's forced and there's no depth. and she really be referencing pride and prejudice that legit admits the attraction. come on.

The whole story is just a fuck and fight cycle. There's nothing good about these two being together. The main reason this series is so awful is that none of these awful characters get better or have consequences for their actions and the author is equally at a loss for the shit she wrote? Like what? Considering that only about 50% of the population has had and upbringing that is conducive to having healthy relationships as in attachment theory. It's now wonder why these types of movies are so popular first of all healthy relationships don't make for interesting stories/movies. Second as 50% of the population is insecurely attached with some type of anxious/avoidant attachment or a mix of both. It makes sense that these hot/cold and intense relationship stories are popular since anxious/avoidant relationships are exactly like this movie and also fifty shades of gray. Also we always root for the under dog in a lot of movies, in the case of after the relationship is the under dog and we want them to stay together in the end just like any other fairy tale.

See I kind of understand where Anna Todd is coming from when she says about her not writing how people would want her to write. I've read plenty of fanfictions, and honestly just plenty of books for that matter, where it doesn't follow the template that we're so used to seeing and has an ending that people usually don't like because it's not happy. With that being said, "who can say they haven't treated someone bad before" and writing seven novels about an emotionally and mentally toxic relationship is not something to defend. If the author herself doesn't understand why Hardin and Tessa are together still when they're clearly a very toxic relationship, then how can anyone defend this series?

I understand the appeal of fanfic, its similar to the one of saccharine Christmas movies - you know in 90 percent of them that it’s not gonna be great when you start watching/reading, but it appeals to the emotions all the same. What gets me about “After” is that the general consensus seems to be that Harry Styles is a pretty decent guy. I don’t know where this Christian Grey double came from. 🤔

Did- did she really just compare teenage abusive smut romance story inspired by a fantasy to be with a boyband member, to medieval war story inspired by the War of The Roses back in the 15th century? One has characters repeating the same mistakes because they never learn, the other has characters going through character changes throughout the story, be it worse or better. One has toxic scenes repeating over and over as if the relationship of 2 protagonists (that is the main point of the story) has just been walking in circle, the other has murder scenes over and over that are essential to the story arc. Not to mention one's primary target audience is young impressionable teenage girls, while the other's is mature adults with fully developed frontal lobe. But yes, of course, totally comparable.
