This was a great show that was probably ahead of its time. Network in the 90s was where great ideas went to die, if Adult Swim existed then it probably lasts longer.
Adult Swim would’ve never picked up a pilot for a cartoon with a budget like this had. The whole reason Korgoth of Barbaria is only a pilot is because it was a regular traditional animation show... which put its budget outside of what Adult Swim could afford.
13:28 "This film gets my highest rating: 7 out of 10". This may be the most on-brand joke of the series. And the rest of the Howard's End parody is surprisingly accurate.
No movie was safe when Jay was around! Jon Lovitz is a gem who dosent get anywhere near the credit for being one of the biggest parts of our childhood who is still doing his thing!
The Cockroach King was supposed to be a parody but then Hollywood made a movie just like it called Joe's Apartment just a few years after this aired. Ebert called it one of the worst movies of all time.
Michael J. Fox, Dudley Moore and Joe Pesci are all somewhere in the 5-4 range, yet Gary Coleman, who was probably only about 4-6, is a GIANT that towers over them. Brilliant lol. Also love all of Dirty Harry's partners, as during the 90's it seemed like they were just shoving these scenarios into EVERY movie back then (usually after the success of movies like Home Alone and Jurassic Park).
Man idk why this show tanked but other shows despite being decades old are still on the air. I mean I know the Critic" would've been either boring if it ran as long as the Simpsons" but it definitely deserved more then 1-2 seasons.
@@RealGateGuardian But a lot of people remember this show in reruns on Comedy Central (or think Jay Sherman was just a one-time character on the episode of The Simpsons with the film festival that had Barney Gumbel's tragic look at how alcohol has ruined his life and Hans Moleman's "Man Getting Hit By Football").
"Boy, this guy can't carry a tune!" *laughter* "Hey fellas, I think he's-a dead." *continued laughter* I don't know why this randomly pops in my head so often, but I love it.
whoever ever came up with and directed it needs to be labeled a genius. never before have i witnessed comedy in its purest form. how is everything well executed and written so that every single joke lands. this my friend is actually funny and needs to be given more props lol
I had a really weird dream recently that I saw Jon Lovitz at some sort of dinner theater in Los Angeles. I approach him and ask if he received the fan letter I sent him three months ago, and he tells me that he’s been extremely busy lately but that he’ll get around to his fan mail tomorrow.
Cause Family Guy jokes about media tend to be mean spirited and just shocking just to be edgy. Like the Aquaman joke, where the entire joke is just "Hey look Aquaman is useless! Get it that's funny! Also let's add some woman about to get rape in the beach as Aquaman can't do anything to help her 🙃". The jokes on the critic where often to mock the industry going big on unnecessary sequels, franchises and extravagant ideas. Family Guy just feels like written by people who are angry that they can't do anything besides Family Guy like Seth McFarland.
They’re shorter and more substantive. A Family Guy parody will have 1-2 jokes and go on for three minutes. Earlier seasons didn’t have this problem, but it seemed to become an issue soon after they came back to Fox.
@@jogiff Family Guy was a very good show before it got canceled. I was 21 at the time it first aired and felt like there was finally a show that spoke to the nostalgia of Gen Xers.
That was a crossover episode that Matt Groening didn't want any part of (season six's "A Star is Burns". Don't let the title fool you; Mr. Burns making his own movie only takes up part of the episode). Sucks for Groening because it's considered one of the beloved older episodes.
I wish he wasn't connected to Jello because I specifically liked Jello pudding pops when I was a kid in the 80s although I dont think their sold anymore anyway. They weren't "great" but I did really like them. I know this is a shallow comment but its just a nastalgia thing and just miss them.
Excellent compilation. They missed out two classic scenes: Jerry Lewis in court saying "Weintraub, Melmik and Melman", and Dudley Moore at the clinic where the nurse says "You have acute cirrhosis" and he says "And you have a cute little butt", and "Don't look now, but your popsicles all melted, ha ha ha haa!".
@@bradencampbell464 I beg to differ! You see, the other raptors and I have constructed a crude suspension bridge to Venezuela. Once there I shall lie low and assume odd jobs under the name, "Mr. Pilkington". But perhaps I've said too much.... ^^100% from memory! 😄
@@Harv72b nicely done! It's been so long since the critic was on TV, I had forgotten the exact wording. I just know they should have included it - it's a brilliant bit, after all.
this series marked one before and one after in the story of movie parodies, is a excellent classic full of comedy and irony, from a highly cynic point of view, really this show deserves a great come back someday.
Damm big bummer. This was one of my favorite shows when it was on. But watching in 2023, im so comedically desensitized that I only smiled a few times watching this
@@ChristopherSobieniakAnd you got burned by boomers just as badly as millennials and Gen Zers. But you did have better entertainment and people applauded you for being more cynical of society's crap.
I'm going to tell you right now as a fan of South Park and Family Guy and American Dad and Futurama leaving king-of-the-hill in a bunch of shows on Adult Swim this right here is one of my all-time favorites as a kid to watch and I grew up watching it in The Simpsons and why this show never went as far as family guy or any of the great iconic shows we watch today that are animated perfectly executed jokes well-written stories and of course the great Jon Lovitz absolutely a brilliant funny animated series should have went so further what it did
4:50 Admittedly that looks at least ten million times better then Rain Man. Mind you so is getting bummed with a Toblerone while having your wisdom teeth removed with a hacksaw ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
great collection of 90's movie parodies. So many moments, had me going "yep, that's about right" or just straight up laughing. What a shame Fox (in their infinate wisdom) chose a "News Department" over shows like this.
